can you turbo a carbed engine??

Only if you mount the carb within a sealed plenum, so there is boost running through the carb, but also acting upon the outside too. Otherwise the pressure will just push past the seals etc. You could try & use a Solex from an R5 or find a Metro turbo (SU?).

What engine are you thinking of?

a lot of turbo pioneers actually used a suck thru layout, where the carb went before the turbo intake, it worked....

i forget who it is, but someones got a project thread on a custom turbo carbed 1.2 - should check it out, i think the guy manufactured a custom airbox for the carb to take the boost, probably that plenum thing craig was talkin about.

one thing that worries me about the mod tho.. is once the turbos in, theres not enough space to get the oil filter off, so your 10,000 mile or anual service might be a bit of a dismatling procedure.

Just get an oil filter relcation kit :D

We are currently working on such an engine.

We remain hopeful over reliabilty issues and hope to have the engine in a production car soon.

to be really honest, there are a great many engines thaty would turbo better than the 12st. but it will be an interesting technical exercise.

Use an XR2 turbo technics plenum on a webber 32/34 carb which,with an adapter plate for a nova inlet,then its done right.they appear on ebay every so often.Use a turbo off a Renault 5.

A 1.3 SR engine has the same compression ration as the Metro turbo engine....

Also, if you used the irmscher injestion system for that engine, it would make it a whole load easier.
