i was gonna say if its an xe, the alternator aint jammed up on the inner wing is it ?

for a start i would say STOP STARTING IT!!!! i would say take it to bits and inspect

the first thing i would take apart is remove the starter motor & clutch inspection plate, then check the timing over before doing major take apart! imo the grinding sounds like something been rattling about inside the bell housing that may have ended up resting quite heavily on the ring gear.
