hrm

ive got a C12NZ

C is for Cat

the Z i'll assume is the injection so the N must represent the low comp, long stroke version of the engine as opposed to the short stroke ST

thats all guessing but i know the NZ uses injection and has a longer stroke than the ST which was carb fed

according to haynes the engine number is made up as follows -

(if your engine number was for example A12ST * 19 003415)

A - Build letter for special export markets (applicable only to Austria/Switzerland/Sweden)

12ST = Engine type - example shown indicates 1.2 ltrs (S) high compression engine requiring 4 star fuel, T power output (a randomly selected letter)

* = capacity to run on low leaded fuel
19 = manufacturing plant ID
003415 = engine serial number

I think N = normal compression (kind of makes sense)

Got the above from page 13.2 revised editions in haynes

The G T bit is usually 'Grand Tourer' like in an MGB GT, I think the E stands for Injection - just a theory based on the Manta GTE, as previously on a Manta when it was a carb, the engine code was 'S', when they injected them, the engine code was 'E'

In German, 'injection' is 'Enspritzung'

Wonder as well if the GTi part was copy righted to Volkswagen.
