there was a few probs with the car..
on my 2nd run out, i put it off the road (ice/snow), hit a woodpile/lorry tyre. the back end of the car was sitting up on top of the tyre, the only way i could get it off was to drive along and try and get the tyre to catch on a rough bit of ground. it was weird driving about with a floating back end..there was no damage though.
then on my 3rd run, the steering column fell to bits. that was very scary as i had just came down a straight and into a chicane. luckil i had slowed down to about 40mph for the chicane as io lost all steering.. so was back in and a new column fitted.
15mins later i was back out and the engine was missfiring and acting like a rev limiter was kicking in about 5k rpm.. we found out that it was the pipercross socks on the carbs that was starving it from air.
so eventually i got it pretty sorted and started to enjoy my last few runs..
Good lad greg, I always wanted to do a suzuki powered nova, had all the details on how to do it etc but never went for it.
It would of made a right little beast. what sort of stuff runs in your class?

Rexy, it is a good little conversion..quick for a 1300!
i am running in the 1400 class (UPTO 1400CC) so all the usual stuff. 1400 8v and 1400 16v novas/corsas, ka's, 106's, mg zr's, proton satria super1400's etc..
Awesome, so it certainly holds it own out there in the pack :D

so i had a shot on the gravel..fancied a shot on tarmac this time. so off we went to Kames race circuit in Muirkirk, Scotland..

thought i was doing ok for having a standard gearbox..it has a standard cwp (about 3.9 iirc) so was terrible off the line. thats where i was losing time..
was also running on 15'' wheels, which was slowing me down, i had massive profile tyres on too, was like having 17'' wheels on. just doesnt work with a wee 1300 motor.
the power steering also packed up, so the steering was murder (before anybody says i am a poof, remember i was steering against the power steering motor that was not working so it was really heavy!!! far worse than a standard nova..
greg1.4
04-05-09, 02:54 PM
also to let you know, i have bought a Quaife Straight Cut Close Ratio gearbox with a Harry Hockley 70% Group A LSD (big side gears to run my drivelink f20 shafts/cv's).. just need to buy myself a 4.8 CWP so i can get off the mark a bit quicker.
also got myself another suzuki 16v engine, planning on getting one of them re-built, bored out to 1400cc, headwork, cams, solid lifters, bike carbs. should be 140/150bhp..
got my power steering setup working again so that should help..
i am taking out the brake proportion valve and fitting a dash adjuster onto pedal box instead.lso fitting a vertical hydraulic fly off handbrake next to the gearstick (nearly a metre long so shouldnt have a problem handbraking)..
then the only thing i need is some 14'' compomotive alloys and decent tyres..

Good skills for a lad with no license yet!...
I know some of us that have been driving years probably wouldn't do as good, fair play dude.

Thank you Scott!
Would love to get a few of the track boys to come upto Kames and have a sprint/test day and we could compare times etc..
my time round the whole circuit was 1min 19seconds.. the record is 1min 16seconds (not bad for a fairly standard 1300 nova) i think with my new gearbox, smaller wheels/better tyres, and a few more ponies i could get my time down to 1min 17..:thumb:

picked up my quaife straight cut gearbox last night. cant wait to get that in!
decided while we are going that far i would get the engine re-built aswell..
so i went into the local engineer/engine machine shop (very well known guy down here and in the rallying background, builds vauxhall xe to over 250bhp)!
he said i have to get engine stripped for him and he will do a bit of work to it.. i am basically just going to get it re-built, lightened and balanced, headwork and the carbs need some attention. it should be running 130+bhp for about £400 which i dont think is bad..

Best thing about a straight cut is the fact it whines lol love it, is the truth though lol, will buy one for mine eventually

oh is that all? id be lucky if i get £200 off my dad lol
must say though greg your cars are a credit to you, i especially love the balck gsi rep :thumb:

You'll need to take me round Kames in this one time
I'm guessing it'll be a similar spec to the way Gordan's white Nova used to be ?
greg1.4
09-06-09, 05:59 PM
Well its gordon's engine, but will be re-built kicking out 140/150bhp (not bad for a 1300 so should go better than gordon's in theory)..with a standard gearbox i was a second slower round the track than gordon with his nova with straight cut box and 13'' wheels..i was running 15's (not a good idea!)
Vaughan i am going upto Burnfoot testing this weekend if you are interested in coming a run?
but i will be putting it back onto tarmac spec after this weekend and trying to shave a second or two off my time round kames in the next few months..
the more testing/experience i can get the better.
i will post a full spec list now the car is about 95% finished..
greg1.4
12-06-09, 11:42 PM
here are some pics of the car finished for now..
simply cant afford to chuck much more money at it now..that has been 10k so far, and i would still like to get some Proflex rear suspension, vertical handbrake, 14'' compomotive wheels..
anyway, the finished article for just now -
