My mate's Mk2 Golf with standard Corrado 2.9 VR6 lump pushes scooby's no problems.

Dunno about Golfs, but here's a couple of stories about 1 Nova & a Volvo & TVR.

I had a standard Volvo S40 T4 saloon - 200bhp. I used to go to cruises in Crewe and there was a short sprint around the back. The first time we went, I drew 3 times sprinting against a stage 1 tuned Escort cossie.

The 2nd time I went, I lost 3 sprints against a 2.0l Nova belonging to an admin off this board. Pretty fast Nova, huh?

The same Nova came flying past me on the motorway once pushing a TVR Griffith/Chaemera (Can't remember which). The TVR was going for it too, but after failing to shake the Nova he got ar5ey and phoned the police to complain about the Nova - sore loser!

my money is on ian or CP? :?:

jkhilton
24-01-03, 10:49 AM
lmao! I remember that, it was Ian on the way to a cruise in Sheffield or somewhere. We were late catching up with the convoy, so I had to put my foot down, all of a sudden I noticed these blue lights flashing at the side of the road and recognised the blue nova parked up!!

That's what you get for racing on the motorway!! I wasn't racing, just trying to catch up!!! lmao!

mikeoxford
24-01-03, 11:01 AM
8) stil amazes me how 10 year old novas can compete with the likes of these so called "performance sports cars"

i guess its possible as if you run enough power, the nova is so light it just keep pulling away

Dicko
24-01-03, 11:38 AM
only got a 1.6 in mine but most golfs are pretty easy, especially at lower speeds like below 70, i struggled to keep with a Mk3 GTi on the motorway before now. raced a V5 thingy the other week off the lights and was doing 80 before he managed to catch me up

wisewood

I know we already established it was Ian but mike, isn't CP's car a 1.4 that's just tuned to the point of death?

i thught ur T4 was chipped andy ;)

jkhilton
24-01-03, 01:47 PM
I didn't think CP's car was tuned to the point of death!!! as far as I know it has been built to a professional standard and wont die at the slightest hint of throttle!!! it didn't sound like it was about to die when he took me out for a spin in MK, although I did think my heart was going to stop!!! lmao! :p

wisewood
24-01-03, 01:53 PM
I dont mean the cars gonna die, i mean anyone else who gets in it will do :D sorry i didnt make myself very clear.

Chris LR
24-01-03, 01:58 PM
As mike said, all these new cars with their on-board computers etc etc, Novas can still keep pace.

I agree with people who say that Evo's are for people who can't really drive, and need the car to avoid accidents for them.

I once beat a Mk2 Golf GTi.

Dicko
24-01-03, 02:14 PM
ye civic type-R's are fun to play with, boot it when there not expecting it then hit the brakes like u cant b assed race. there power range is so high up iv found takes them ages before the power comes in. sounds like a sewing machine on steroids. also those mini cooper-S are pretty nippy but same again sounds like a sewing machine and only beat me and speeds over 80mph.
i think its the extra weight they struggle to get it going at lower speeds then the bad aerodynamics of the nova holds it up at higher speeds.

jkhilton
24-01-03, 02:33 PM
What was the 0-60 time on the new civic type-r's?? is it something like 7.5-8 seconds??? aren't they 200bhp? I would have thought they would be so much faster than they are, but like you say, they are heavy cars.

Dicko
24-01-03, 02:54 PM
something like 7.4 but its becuz the cam rnage is so high. like 5-8k which si the same prob the prelude v-tec suffered from. once there going there great its getting them going and getting the revs up that they struggle with

jatinder
24-01-03, 03:55 PM
i once beat a golf although it was parked ontop of a recovery truck?

I think the old MK1 and 2 and 3 golfs look sweet its the new one i think look a bit crap

NovaNever
24-01-03, 04:08 PM
I haven't had a Nova beat my dub yet.

I find you Nova boys are always keen for a go, but the look on your face  is just so great esp when you see it is a girl that has just had you!!!

I think it would be a laugh to do some track days with some Nova's up racing the dubs

wisewood
24-01-03, 04:24 PM
I'm sure our not so secret track day weapons would be happy to oblige... CP/MC would be more than happy i'm sure.

jkhilton
24-01-03, 04:25 PM

My mate's Mk2 Golf with standard Corrado 2.9 VR6 lump pushes scooby's no problems.

I am afriad i simply do not believe this. I have experienced my uncs scooby, and there is not a chance in hell of a vr6 golf even touching it. Golfs seem to have this thing about thinking they can beat subaru's, and them people are dreaming. Ain't gonna happen. The only golf i would say could stay with a scooby, if that, is the latest R32, which is a 3.2 V6, 4x4 and 6 speed. Even that is a second off 0-60!

bollox. u think a chip and pulley can make up 3 seconds 0-60? also considering your talking about a front wheel drive car, with traction being more of a issue...... also thenthere is the handling.... bye bye golf would be what the scooby driver would say.

Rob -

a chip and a pulley can make a hell of a difference... the smaller Pulley effectively changes the gearing of the charger thus causing it to spin faster ergo more boost - also afaik the rallye is 4wd not 2wd...

The only VW to come near me is my brothers Corrado 20 valver, lower gears he had me till my car wound up, then it was bye bye GTi.

Had loads of Novas try it on wit........ I aint even gonna bother finishing

Just like to add a non-blinkered view!
I know our novas are quick, but there are some fcuking quick Golfs out there. The guy who came to feature my car for TV had a Turbo'd VR6 lump in a MK2 Golf, and that has gotta be the second fastest car I've ever been in, does 0-60 in something silly, like 5.2secs, and that included pulling away in 2nd gear! :o
So next time your out thrashing your nova thinking it'll take that standard looking Golf look out, you don't know what they have under that bonnet!

Chris

PS. Fastest car I've been in is a 1972 Beetle with a Scooby WRX lump in it, but thats another story completely!

I may be wrong but in my area anyway regards VWs they seem to go all out and build amazing from the ground up or just dont really bother with engine tuning and go with some small styling? personally i havnt been beaten by a golf, but then again i cant properly recall racing one?

Mattpolocoupe
24-01-03, 11:26 PM
is that the mk1G60 nitros? i cant be bothered to openthe link...lol

read about it in performance Vw....

my mates subaru is a 2000 p1...std impreza's are slow! so was his evo7 he had a while back sounded nice wit full exchaust but was slow! the p1 is heavily modded..erm nearing 400bhp but since we put sound deadening in it its lost its feel fast factor u can hear the turbo n see that ur doin over a ton in a few seconds but like nah lost its rush on me...needed the loo after last times adventure tho :O

gettin off track here...what was the comment....oh yea the golf vr6 they are v.heavy n i dont believe it either.

the great thing i like is that my mate is able to drive his subaru n then get in my car scare the hell out of me in the process i never knew a 1.3 to be so quick mind nr redline for most of the time....:D

ive alot of repect in the village by the nova crew..as apparently my polo is quick...dunno where they got that idea from! n it sounds sweet tho its std:s apparently its got a big bore...er no...n its tuned...er no...not special just optimax makes a hell of a difference n i swear by it n if i wanna shock em runnin the drilled air box at 5k revs makes it sound like an airoplane...hehe...tease ant i.

RAllye...mate i love ur car..went to portsmouth to meet a load of polo mates....went in a G40 (1.3 supercharged polo for those that dont know) std but still rapid wanna go in pauls 180bhp version...losin it again...:P

n e way for those who want summut quick think of a mclaran F1...look at ur pockets n then go to http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/gtr/index.html n tell me what u think....is me mates new project oh n before u ask hes 48 so he can afford it. sound be fun me thinks...

also y is there such as rift between dubbers n nova ppl i have respect for decent novas...n decent drivers some of u guys sound real clued up....others are still learning....but we all love out cars...its the kids that drive at me...n do handbrake turns next to me inchs from my door n my own body that get up my nose...so what hes insured ive almost lost my life once thank u:P

im gonna stop cos im real tired n really ant gonna make much sense other than dribble.....lol..........cya all later...rallye do reply to this mate...id like to hear from u...

Matt

P.s thought id pop by on rallyes recommedation

I agree with your comments matt, alas it's your people causing rifts on here though? We appreciate the VWs for sure. OK you might not like the Novas; fair enough, but I dont think theres need for registering on other peoples boards and then posting how weak their cars are.

Hope this thread can stay sensible, Im personally a big fan of the mk1 Golf, I'm going to own one at some stage, but for me its the GTE at the mo :D

Mattpolocoupe
24-01-03, 11:43 PM
fester what spec is ur car....i understand the GTE std is erm 90bhp or summut its a 1.6 i know for sure.

Can u explain summut to me....im rather confused wit the In my experience with smell engined novas and pecos....surley a scorpion back box or such would sound better....mate robs n phils novas both rasp like mad..robs is....well was think hes rid it now...a 1litre n phils ive never had a good at but its a 1.2 n i know cos hes runnin 15's id have him to as faar as acceleration goes...wofflin again point being up my hill is a 30 limit i do 35-40 normally and if i do do 30 my zorst note is stable n smooth...cos i have lopped of the tailpipe u know the std polos ones dip down under the rear valance n are pee shooters...didnt like it have a stainless tip...thats al but that lack of bend makes it deeper specially underload! yea so y do novas rasp is it summut do wit the engine design polos i see even the grandad ones are really deep compared to new cars!

also anyone out curiousoty the 1.2 is 55bhp my 1.3 is also 55bhp yes vw went for ecconmy (sp) over performance...still produces 71ft lbs of torque so its not all bad...run a cold air feed n optimaz which helps speed it up as breathing is the restiction on these engines...whats the torque on the 1.2 nova engine? i can wheels spin from just over 2.5k for a few metres n if its in the power band i can go for much further not that i do cos it only knackers ur tyres n its very mature imo !

Regards,
Matt

Fester

the GTE is 100bhp from factory although 14 years later 90bhp probably isnt far off.

I personally dont like Peco's either

To be honest Nova's have got a terrible reputation within the world of car modifying, simply because a lot of people that modify them are max power muppets who buy into the industries fake power figures off a filter will give you 20BHP more etc. when infact all it will do is allow you engine to breathe better and release the potential that the engine has.

Also the amount of tackily modified novas around is terrible, personally speaking around my area there are quite a lot of shockingly kept cars (one with viper stripes, another with a sun strip that takes half of the window up etc etc).

As a car the nova is good, the potential of the chassis for is immense, the engines are very tuneable, the brakes are ... (we will not talk about standard brakes lol), and as a whole the car has a lot of tuning potential.

Mattpolocoupe
24-01-03, 11:58 PM
well il be truthfull...i didnt know what id expect when i came on here the tech section was somewhat mized as far as ppls opions and knowledge....plz no on slate me for this...its true of every forum u have ppl in the know n learners...we all have to start somewhere!

mate im glad u replied u 2 seem to have ur heads screwed well n truly on...i have to say the novas around my village have decreased....much to mine n my mate (wit p1) pleasure...one got writen off. lol.. n other this is what i mean....mate rob wondered how far he could rev it...clever guess what it went bang!! rather spectacully from what i hear...poor thing what did it do to deserve that!

std brakes love it.......mate mk2 polos dont have brake servos! count ur selfs lucky i have a very strong right leg as u can imgaine! as a result but hell does my car stop i jsut drive it to the road n its potential n no more!

u can understand y when i say that i was in a head on car crash in my dads volvo 340 in july 2001 we both nearly died!!!!!! his by a prat in a ford goin to fast n lost it round a corner....lucky we didnt take the polo, phew i got out wit a fractured vertibra n head injuried.....1 week later i was out in the impreza doin 80 so scared i couldnt speak for miles....n ive been drivin since april im 18 now 16 when it happened! went to castle combe track tracin in his evo7 ... good day it was.... n i can drive!!! i have ABS ... me :P

im gonna stop in a min my replys are massive....lol

Also ive ust read the mature post that somebody but up in the general forum about how terrible nova's are, well if they are that repulsive to that person then why waist time on a nova based community. G'day chaps, I'm another from the VW side. Personally, the most annoying thing I find with Novas is the ease with which a 2.0 16v will go in  As has been said, good and bad in all walks of life, pity some of them drive though...

I'll have to dig out an old Motor magazine I've got from about 1983. In it are a mk2 Fiesta cabrio by a company called Avon and an Irmscher Spyder running injection on a 1.3 SR Nova...in 1983!

God how embarrassing for club gti to have an idiot like matt.

I really don't understand why people get so up their arses and feel they have to come onto another specific car related forum and start shovelling out shit. I respect other people for whatever car they want to drive. be it nova, vw golf... whats the point of bickering... its called choice at the end of the day and these posts do nothing for the sake of car enthusiasts.

Why don't people think before they start posts like this.... beyond their brain capacity to think of what they are doing is just pissing off other people who haven't done jack shit to them in the first place.... ok theres nothing wrong with occasional banter between different makes of cars, but 5 pages of it?! lol what a joke... :(

As Micky said, both myself and he have taken screen shots of the articles so if you would like to see just let us know.

I have also saved the web pages for one of the forums posts and saved each of the two pages and all images from it into self extracting zip files.
Again, if you would like to see it and the links are now dead that micky provided let me know...

They are uploaded into my web space so you can access it from anywhere once i have given you the URL. It makes for interesting reading as it proves, as micky has already said that "some" of the 'dubs' owners are only here to take the pi$$.

I thought all the village idiots were part of the nova crew under 16 culture?

But it seems the VW boys (and horses) are taking the mantle now:)

Very poor having to come to other boards to create an arguement.

As for a track day (LMFAO). Id prefer a nova only track day ' be more competition.(so leave ur chips and pulleys at home thanks)
