View Full Version : My first ever nova, 1.2 turbo (standard engine with a turbo slapped on)

Hey People.

Firstly sorry for not being on here for so long, got side tracked with my job, home DIY, Family and then my Range Rover...

So I am sorry for not replying etc,

The nova is still sitting in the garage waiting for some new tyres as I gave my last set to a mate of mine for his motor. But with any luck my new tyres will be fitted this weekend :-)

As ive had to restart my thread heres a little back group info..

The nova started off as a 1.2 star, I then stripped it all out, fixed a few minor problems and started to look at my turbo conversion.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/cupra_duper/Nova%20Project/IMG_2003.jpg

after some troubles and two sets of lowering kits the nova was 40mm lower and looking good. I then fitted a light weight racing seat out of a kit car.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/cupra_duper/Nova%20Project/IMG00083.jpg

Then it was time for turbo power, I had a 1.9 306 tdi turbo laying around in the garage so after making an adapter plate up, sump drain and a new inlet box the turbo was fitted, I then added a T piece for the oil pickup.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/cupra_duper/Nova%20Project/IMG_1916.jpg

A few test runs on NO PSI the car was running well.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/cupra_duper/th_MVI_2065.jpg (http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/cupra_duper/?action=view&current=MVI_2065.flv)

So were is it now.

Its full pipped up (no intercooler yet), dump valve fitted, boost running about 0.5 of a bar. Just need to finish off the air filter and tyres then its MOT time and on the road for some blasts.

Just uploading some more videos so I will update later today.

Also if your interested this is my new project http://www.insanelaners.net

Yeah it will be fully road legal, soon as my tyres are on and the final bits are sorted.

then its to be sold as I need the space back lol, but every time I work on the nova i think "how could I sell it, its just way to funny and wicked to sell" lol

No but it was a standard 1.2 so that must be about 50-70bhp ish..

But what is going on with the tail pipe/back box

Its a bit of odd pipe that I had laying around (i believe its from a metro or like, the front bit of pipe that connects to the mainfold) but hey, it fits and will do untill selling time.

IIRC... Injection 1.2's are 45bhp and carbed 1.2's are 55bhp from factory, minus all the numbers lost over the years lol.!

Don't hold me to this it may be wrong.

Good project though, nice to see something different.

You thinking of selling? No idea of value, its really down to what people will pay, could only get a few hundred for it on a bad day or if its what someone really wants then who knows.

Quick Update...

I have now fitted the intercooler :-), Its not in the best place as you have to remove the intercooler to check the oil (will move the dip stick).

So piped up and ready to go, took her for a spin and OMG...... Its way cool :-).

Sounds fantastic and is really isnt bad on the 0-60.

Think I need to wind the turbo back a bit as it was pushing over 1bar :-S. Couldnt take any pic's as it was a bit dark when I finished (plus I want to give it a wash under the bonnet before I let the world see my handy work...

Last bits required to finish it..

1) Cut hole in bonnet for air flow to intercooler, then paint matt black
2) Would like to fit two SR or SRI seats with full harnesses
3) Find a rear box.

Then its MOT time..

why dont you FM that cooler, its right above a turbo and exhaust manifold, its going to turn into a interHEATER, only seen this done once before, on the Driftworks 200SX S14, and thats transverse engine, so it worked, but this, i think is going to be problematic!

I know its going to mean re-routing pipes an whatnot, but thats not going to do anything sat there!! dont take this the wrong way or anything (IE you thinking im calling you an idiot, im not!) but head rises and a hole in the bonnet i wouldnt think is going to suck air in but blow hot air out!

Indeed I could re pipe the intercooler to the front, but really cant be bothered. After a few runs the intercooler stays cool, so I'm going to give it a go and see how it works.

My old 306, 405 tdi's use to have the intercooler over the engine so I would assume this will work as well.

Thanks for your note tho, always good to see what people think about my madness :-)..

novaguy08
26-05-09, 11:34 AM
scoobies & minis have the same set up too, over the engine, but i still think that because yours is over the exhaust & turbo on long runs its going to over heat & cause you trouble! Or whomever you sell it on to anywho lol

If you want to make sure that you get cool air being sucked through the intercooler, make sure you make a forward facing vent on the front & a smallish rear facing vent on the back of the bonnet, that way itll suck cool air in through the front and blow hot air out the back.

i have looked at this thread for a while and there seem to be a few major 'technical' issues with the fueling that have not been addressed. and from the standard of the build so far.....i doubt they ever will be......

Technical point- At what RPM does the turbo start 'paying for itself', steve?

i am just a bit surprised that it works ok on that engine having come off a 1.9TD.. On that basis i would not expect any oomph till over 3000?

Technicalsteve
24-06-09, 12:26 PM
dont have a rev counter so dont know what RMP.

"paying for itself" would kick in around 2500 tho, as thats about when a tdi turbo kicks in. All done on how the turbo blades are set (size and angle)...

Goes ok to be honest, im use to driving a Modided Skoda Fab VRS and a Leon Curpa R, and the Nova runs well for a 1.2 turbo without any real setup..
