View Full Version : rev limit
just wondering what sort of revs people rev there engines to?
have a 1.6 8v rally engine, running twin forties,16v bottom end,
and serious head work done, solid lifters, major porting, biggervalves etc
power seems to be fairly high up the revs, not sure exactly where as rev counter broken. anyway to get to the point was navi in said car today(mk 2 astra) and a conrod decided to get out and walk home.have to rebuild the angine with a standard 1.6 8v bottom end for 2 weeks time, with a limiter fitted this time, and was wondering what is a safe limit to rev it to?
I'm not sure but I'd say with solid lifters and arp conrod bolts (got those?) its gotta be fairly high?
I had a 1600 8v with just a 1300 twin choke carb, k&n and 4 branch, and it revved past 7000 with no problems.

with that lot done to it i would think 8k would be a nice one!
however get the crank lightened & balanced as well as a lighter flywheel, generally lighten and balance the bottom end for better revving, get it on to a rr to get it set up right and a rev limiter set up on it
Depends what work is done to the new engine. 7500Rpm would be a safe limit. Anything above would be risky depending on the work done.

got mine pushing 8000 an simler spec to yours and had no problems so far
the new block will be totally standard, not even rod bolts, just to get
back for one event while new bottom end is being built, what would be a safe limit for that one?
stock rods, basically a std 1400 with a cam on solid lifters rev to about 8500 rpm.
With hydraullic lifters you tend to jack the lifters up around 7500 -8000 rpm.
might chance the limiter at 7500 and set the shift light at 7200, trying to stay on the safe side:thumb:
7250 at risk with no ARP's (they take an hour to fit, just get them in and score an extra 5-750rpm on the limiter)
stick in the std motor & fix the rev counter

Sorry to hi'jack, but burgo how do you do that? Do you have a cam and weber or what?

Lol I used to do that with the 16sv as the 1300 carbeurettor delivered all the fuel from 5500rpm onwards, just not as brave with the 1200 lol.
the 1200 rev better than the 16's give it abit of advance and get ya toe in ;)
The limiter is set at 7700rpm's on my track car and its happy to bounce off it all day.
