View Full Version : HOORAY - New Engine!
HAZARR!!!
Got my car back from the garage fitted with its nice recon 1.4 carbbed engine (K&N fitted).
The engine number starts NV and has a couple of 4's in it (cant remember it all)
The engine came out of a MK2 nova (I'm guessing a standard 1.4) and its been married up to my existing 4 speed box.
However what Iwant to know is, is it worth sticking in a 5 speed box?
Me m8 reckons leave the 4 speed in coz its better???
I do 50 miles a day at least on the motorway
Not that bothered about booting it about like an idiot anymore as long as I can cruise comfortably 8)
What you lot reckon?

i cant remeber which way round it is, BUT i think you will do lower revs at high speed in the four speed
the 5 speed close ratio (F13CR) is al right, trouble is at low end the 1st n 2nd gears are all close together, very good for the traffic light grand prix, esp if your a smooth / fast changer, and also suits mild / agreesive driving, and also crusing, i can do 30 in fifth just about, although on hills etc it does need 4th, but when doin 70 mph on a motaway (yeah right officer ;)) like u do ade mate u will find ur engine sittin at quite high revs.
aragorn is the man to speak to as he is well up on his gearboxes and ratios.

8) congrats on new engine almost forgot!!!!!!
u like the improvement??
i think NV is the code for any carbed 1.4 - as my eninge is NV AFAIK and thats from an SR
ill check that tonight cos now ive typed it i begin to doubt myself!!!!

i would say definately have to fit the 5 speed as you will always be wanting to change up a gear to use the extra power.

I'm getting a 1.4 sr engine and close ratio box fitted to my car at the weekend and I can't wait to waste corsa sri's with it

i'd go for a wide ratio box if u do lots of motorway
youve got it married upto an F10/4 just now
if u get an F10/5 with the same final drive then you'll have the same ratios as u have just now plus 5th as an even wider ratio for motorways
edit:
the F13 uses the same ratios as the F10/5 but might have different FD depending on the car
the F13CR's 5th is the same as your current 4th so assuming the FD is the same you'll be cruising at the same revs
so - an F10/5 or an F13 if it will fit :D

i have a F10 CR fitted to my 1.2 at the mo. it works well but 5th is lower than the 4 speeder's 4th so it revs like a bitch on the motorway
btw dont trust all you read in the haynes manual ;)
just collected my car from work (had to leave it there coz I was still driving the wifes seat ibiza) and it was v nippy!
Have to take it easy for a while - let it bed in etc - seems to be idiling quite high but then I dunno what revs a 1.4 should be idiling at neway so...
Spoke to Aragorn who reckoned a f10/5 is the best box (not a close ratio), so will investigate that in a month or so...
Cheers for the help guys.

my F10 CR box on my 1.4 modded engine means on the motorway at 100 im over 5000 prm, LOL :D

there is no F10CR box
there is F10/4 and F10/5 - if its a 10/5 it can have 2 different FD ratios: 3.94 for 1.2 and 1.3 or 4.18 for SR's and 1.0's
the 1400 engine was fitted with the standard 3.94 FD F10/5 OR the F13CR with the 3.94 FD ratio
im guessing the SR's had the CR box and the 5dr and saloons as well as the 1400 merits had the F10/5

lads...why did you waste time going for the 1.4? the 1.6 with a carb drops straight in with no fuss and looks the same as a 1.3/4 to the untrained eye :|
Were you planning on declaring the engine to Mr Insurance? Coz you may have well gone for the 1.6 coz any modifications especiallu engine swaps bump up policys big time anyway.

if you read my above post i did tell you NOT to believe all the haynes tells you.
THERE IS A F10 CR BOX - i have one
it is the same internals as the F13CR box and 3.94 FD and it is stamped CR on the endplate
mk2 sr's have them fitted.
the sri's and gte/gsi had the f13 box all others had F10
1300 sr's have standard ratio's with 4.18 FD giving lower gearing the mk2 sr has the F10 cr with 3.94 FD
if you still dont believe me ask CP and your more than welcome to come and look at it.
ps i checked the ratio's with a gear/wheel calculator and the ratio's all match up.

ive just had a word with dicko and i think ive worked out whats goin on
haynes lists an F13CR for the 14NV and the C14NZ engines
but the F13 aint gonna fit the NV or NZ lumps cos of the flywheel size - so what they've actually done is fitted F10 box with F13CR ratios and haynes are just listing it wrong :D

it dont really matter - just prooves the haynes is crap
im just trying to tell you that the f10cr does exist.
have a look for main bearing cap bolts - torque settings - 1400nv
gives 2 different setting - pile of poo- better off guessing half the time
