covers the plugs - a one off. Think Dans for a 2ltr (I think) so it sits in the middle of the engine (I think) covering the plugs. Its a fancy show piece and well worth it when the bonnet is lifted.

be prepared to see him at Trax next year with his polishing cloth buffing furiously and breathing on it!

mikeoxford
16-01-03, 12:06 PM
lol perhaps a custom rocker cover for an 8v is in order!? is that possible?

Nova1.6
16-01-03, 12:08 PM
maybe, u should be able to grind the top of it down so it's smooth, then engrave what u want on it? would that be possible?

simon@novaheaven
16-01-03, 12:55 PM
Dicko, Grab the yellow oil filler cap and pull it off, yellow piece in your hand and black bit on the engine cover still!!

Dec Burke had a small black one on his engine!

Does anyone do anything for the 1600 16v??? I can get carbon fibre covers done instead of the plastic!

Sy

16-01-03, 01:01 PM
what can be done for the 1600 8v's?

dan16v
16-01-03, 05:35 PM
thanks lads! this sort of thing is not cheap! basicaly bcause the cover is never symetrical cause its been ground bak so the milling machine basicaly is soooo clever it does a trial run and maps itself to the contours of the metal other wise some bits of ingraving would be deeper than others-geddit? and that would look v silly! all you 1.6 lot i think it is possible! once mikesri sees this he will want one - he has an sri so i spect his would be a trial run! like myne was for the 16v the bloke also does the same to hand brakes etc as youve seen in my feature looks mint! and you can have wat ever you want engraved! :D

dan16v
16-01-03, 07:42 PM
thats wat i thought micky! but by the time my car is finished in 3months it will probably be as common as the digi dashlol! after the bloke done the handbrake i just thoght bout my rocker cover! if any one wants one pm me. i dont know whats in the pipeline from the bloke but he said hand brakes are no prob and easy to price but things like rocker covers will be fairly expensive! but remember your getting a 1off and its a personal touch to the car! i will post some buisness cards up soon , oh yea he does most of the cnc ing for regal probably the only decent product they sell  bet they dont have the knowledge to fit the spark plug cover tho

dan16v
17-01-03, 01:22 PM
never thought of that! im seriously gunna ask! that would be mad! if you can groove them with out risking shattering u should be able to engrave!

Nova1.6
17-01-03, 01:25 PM
Haha, yeah engrave em on, like the drilled and GROVED disks u can get. I'm going to engrave my.....windows too!

dan16v
17-01-03, 02:46 PM
im not joking m8! im gunna find out, the engraving if deep! at would last for ages. hmmm windows lol well u could get them etched!

Ok, I see it now! It looks good, nice 1. How much would that cost then?
Can he do DESIGN work on it????? not just plain lettering?

Could u paint that cover??? somehow? so it lasts

.....and its not a one-off ...just so that you know ..its been done by a few guys on Mig before. I only found that out a few months ago when I decided thats what I wanted (b4 I knew it had been done already ..d'oh!) Still, a great way to personalise your engine bay. I'm well up for that!!

dan16v
18-01-03, 08:24 PM
lol just to let you know it is a one off bcause no one else has that 'exact' same design and logo! i spoke to him bout painting but he said the best way would be to anodise it! it cost me bout ?40 but that was on the cheap! ill ask bout design patterns etc as im sure he could , would just take a little longer to prog i think?

Just to let you know you can get brakes discs engraved. I was at the Autosport show last week and Red Dot are doing it as their new gimmick for this year, I suppose at the end of the day it's just the same as grooving the discs, but dependant on what you have engraved, it could give you some interesting brake pad wear

ok chris i dont think ill bother tho dont want to go ott! thought yud be able 2 as u say its only the same as drilling or grooving

Sid

i spoke to him bout painting but he said the best way would be to anodise it!

Let me know Danny boy. How would u anodise it???
I am interested.

dan16v
21-01-03, 09:58 PM
anodising is done by way of basicaly electrocuting the metal! this causes the anodising agent which i think is a negative to bond to the metal! only thing is colours dont vary to much ie mainly blue/red/purple and gold

Sid
22-01-03, 05:54 PM
Can u get it etched and then anodised red for me??

WILL THAT WORK? Let me know, as somebody else said it wouldn't.

dan16v
22-01-03, 08:44 PM
I WILL ASK M8! I KANT C WHY YOU CANT ANODISE IT ITS ALLY AND ANY THING ALLY CAN BE ANODISED! RED WOULD BE AN EASY COLOUR 2!

mikeoxford
23-01-03, 10:36 AM
yes it is possible, do it at college all the time in machine shop doing my cad/cam unit of ICT

anodising shall we say for arguments sake "stains" a piece of metal, so it turns all the atoms or whatever red instead of silver. if you cut through the metal section in half (if the anodising has been done well) it should be the darkest colour outside, but as it progresses to the middle it will be silver - imaging staining a piece of wood in creosote or similar - its just like that, colour drawn in from outside, but not all the way to the centre.

you would want to engrave it and THEN anodise it - just to be safe that where you engrave will be anodised, otherwise you could run the risk of having stained red plug cover, and when etched/engraved silver writing - perhaps thats something you may even want to do!? bit difrent.

mikeoxford
23-01-03, 10:37 AM
just to confirm anodising the colour red is possible.

most deep colours like that are good, but if not done properley it *COULD* (it really depends on quality of anodisers) come out lighter and be pink, it depends how much colour / electrolyte then use.

a bad colour im afraid is blue - it comes out sky blue whatever ive tried to do anyway!

That is exactly what I want to do Mike!!!!! spot on. :)

What ya saying Dan??

This is another alternative:
Its is polished silver, the black is just a reflection, not coloured.
The logo is etched on the cover.
It doesnt seem to be as deep as yours Dan, the logo is designed.

on my old 2.0 i polished and painted it the other way.
But i didnt have any logos im afraid

u answered your own question mate ;)

that one u put up was etched

the other novaload.net one was engraved.

engraving is a drill bit similar to a dremel, that cuts a groove out of metal material in the same way a milling machine works.

engraving is used for instance on chrome sill plates you buy for your door sills.

this works whereby the normal shiney silver is covered with a template and the logos you want to appear are cut out of the template, then the metal undergoes a process similar to shot blasting, where it makes the design on the metal by taking of the surface
