View Full Version : Recommend me a car for £5000 or under
Hi due to the nova getting sold im on the lookout for another car.It needs to be fairly quick, handle well and be reliable. It will also be my daily driver and be used for going for drive's upto scotland/wales etc(and hopefully germany and the nurgburgring).the few cars i've been looking at are:
Civic type r - Honda reliability, suppose to handle okay but not very tunable in N/A form.
seat ibiza cupra - Very tunable, not supposed to handle that good and starting to look abit dated.
clio 182/172 cup -Handle brilliantly, fairly quick, not keen on interior(nothing seems to set it off from the other models in the range)
s2 106 rallye - Handle good, fairly rare, getting old abit and i can see them being a bit of a pain on motorways etc.
what do you guys think or suggest?anymore cars?also anywhere else to look on the internet for cars?i've tried ebay, pistonheads and various owners forums.

I'd go for the Civic, Ford Focus or something from the VAG stable. Golf, Audi A3/A4, Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia.
clio 182 or a Leon Cupra R  - if you can afford the insurance.
Regards to the Civic - why would you want to modify it? It's one of the few cars that I recon are near perfect out the box.
EDIT: and look on Auto Trader, cars seem to go less on there than eBay lol

If you don't mind tractor noises then a Fabia vRS ticks a lot of boxes, except for they don't handle fantastically (not bad either though) standard. Fairly cheap too, can pick a really good one up for £5k. Nice interior, lovely and comfy, power kicks in around 2k rpm and at 80mph you are doing just over 2k rpm in 6th gear.
Mines still running the standard clutch and was RR'd at 164bhp with 259ft/lb torque, yet will still deliver 45mpg on a good run. Any more power and you want one with an uprated clutch minimum, but the engines are good for over 200bhp and near 400ft/lb with a hybrid turbo and a few other bits.

There is an X plate 540 for under £5K at a 2nd hand dealer that likes to charge a good 20-30% more than most... so thats a funky big ass start
s3 is the way i think my mate has got one and he gives it death every day just watch out for clutchs they take about 9hours to do and they are not cheap

spend £4k on the best one you can (Late classic or early frogeye) and a grand on an exhaust/warlbro/remap+270-280Bhp and 280-300lbfttorque.

impreza are to common and there not as good as everyone thinks, most peeps just buy the car for the note that comes off them. Audi s3/s4, mazda RX7 twin turbo are pretty uncommon and they are fun to drive and fookin rapid!

you can get a cheap uk spec facelift and throw on a TD05h turbo off the imports and your looking at import power and the cheaper insurance uk spec being only grp 17 or there is the ihi range of turbos all will boost the power very well this is what i did with mine anyway juat my opinion also common is not always a bad thing
