hi everybody, after reading every thread int he country of nova rebuilds i thaught it was time i started my own
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/IMG_1544-1.jpg
oooo yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
after looking for a while and having money spare to buy one this wee car came up and bought it through jon44. ;)
The car had been dry stored since 05 until a month or 2 maybe before i bough it but thankfully wasnt too badly exposed as the bodywork / rust / rot isnt too bad but general interiro damp an mold etc had started in the
i then just gave the outside a wash to see the general conditon of the body work as green glit and genral mold had taken over the window seals etc
the car needs a new front drivers window as it hada to be broke to get into the car at a time
obvisouly the bumper are faded but im not worried as i will be sorting that out when they come off
after the quick clean i took a few photos

genreal shots of strut tops etc
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/IMG_1599-2.jpg
i plan to bring alll the arms back to bare metal and prime and repaint them all gloss black
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/IMG_1601-2.jpg
quick photos to show the worst of the surface rust on the n/s wing

plans are to get it into a nice dry (locked, lol) shed (clearing one from clutter at the minute) then begin the stripping process.
1st - remove front panels (wings, bonnet, bumpers, lights etc to inspect for hidden rust
2nd - remove engine and general runnig gear to clear the engine bay
3rd - prep surface for seam welding to stenghthen the near 20 year old car
4th - seam weld engine bay around strut mounts and a new battery try, also a small patch in the boot (typical areas to go)
5 th - fully underseal the bottom of the car (even though its very clean) and get all the armas etc sandblasted and reapainted gloss black, reconditon the 2.0 brakes and new pads and discs all round depeding on condition
6th - clean the engine and repaint the bottom end etc but just polish up the head and slot it back into the freshly painted bay and new hoses maybe?
7th - once all welding and fabrication finshed start thinking about panels, what needs replaced or saved for respraying then just begin getting ready for a respray hopefully (if funds are there, if not the car will just sit there until the moneys there for a respray)
8 - rebuild the car and mot ands tax it
9 - enjoy it (loooooooooooooong way away)
as im just 19 and have 2 jobs to keep myself going il only have a sunday or late nights after work at 9
this is my first project so its going to be a big learning curve and il be doing most of the work myself with a little help from my big bro and daddy hopefully
wish me luck - new update soon just going to get it into a better shed this weekend

Youve got a good car compare to my first sr mate, had to pretty much rebuild the whole car in a week. Brakes look like standard with drilled and grooved discs, my GTE/GSI brakes were always vented.

If its your first project theres plenty of people/articles on here that can help you out and show you the way mate, keep us updated :thumb:

ea basically restore it back to original health and just have it looking very fresh

only mods for the minute is the 60mm springs, janspeed exhuast which came on it, k&n airfilter and im considering a 4branch also

as for wheels the 3spokes are staying but if cav slabs or astra mk3 wheels pops up before i get around to refurbing the 3 spokes i may buy them

interior will be steam cleaned, new audio components and maybe a digi dash but i think retro original is just as nice

at the minute im concentrating on getting the underseal and sema sealer off and fabrication, quite happy with my progress so far

thanks for the comments dj wudgey and stuart :thumb:

got a bit more work done recently but never got around to putting up the photos

its the slow, boring job of prepping for welindg etc so bare with me and il get there, im learning as i go along ..............

removed the sound deadner from the bulkhead and started to prep the bay to go into primer after welding to the rest of the arches

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/P1010355.jpg

i then set to removing all the bad bits whihc left areas like this

and i then made cardborad templates for the several areas i am goin to replace which will make it easier to cut and shape the plates - took a while but quite proud of my efforts :)

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/P1010351.jpg

cardboard templte example

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/P1010352.jpg

all of them, lol, nothing major as you can see

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/P1010353.jpg

and lastly i removed the interior before welding the area in the boot, the seats will also be shampoo'd and maybe steam cleaned before they are put in again

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/P1010354.jpg

i get bored easily hence why i have 3 or 4 things going at once rather than stay at one area whihc i feel suits me best

im currently cleaning the underside of the car and re-painting it whihc i will post photos of once finshed - soon'ish lol

thatttttttttssssssssssssss allllllll folks

thanks

wel after not updating in a while ive been getting on with the slow but worthwhile jobs

as im learning as i go my project isnt going as quick as everyone elses but im getting there, lol

comments welcome

here was a general phtoo of the underside beofre i started working on it

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/P1010358-1.jpg

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/P1010357-1.jpg

i then removed the brake lines and hid them away for later cleaning, these gear selctor was also removed

after cleaning the entire underside(c*nt of a job) and applying a combination of fresh stone chip and seam sealer, once i was happy i applied a coat of white hammerite for further protection and to make it looks the business, very happy with the outcome and will give it the extra mint look when finshed

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0177-1.jpg

i then took the ream beam and gearbox (once removed) and soaked it in petrol and left for a while to remove any grease, oil etc

i then hit it with the powerwasher on a fine jet and they both came up very well and left a clean surfece to start prepping them both for paint
before cleaning:

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0176.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0173.jpg

after:
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0183.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0182.jpg

i then started prepping and painting some bits, mite aswel do them now and
store them away for later fitting, it s doing the small items right that will help the build quilty later on

gear linkage with mount attached
before:

mount:
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0188.jpg

started prepping the brake servo- started sanding it and loved the chrome/polished look so i kept going, what do you think about a polished servo or do you think i should have it black, white r silver to match other areas of the bay? im undecided yet

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0190.jpg

shinnnnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

general photo of my painting this evning
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0186.jpg

i then bought a spot weld cutter, whihc is basically a drill bit with a slightly flat head (A in the photo below)
http://www.htpweld.com/products/auto_body_tools/images/spot_weld_drill_bits.jpg

i then used this along with a big hammer to remove the remaing part of the front section/panel to make way for the new one

after a few hours
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0180.jpg
and vioula...........................................i ts in

i used g-clamps to hold it, i intend now to trial fit the bonnet to make sure the catch fits perfectly

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0192-1.jpg

i am also finshing up the cardboard templetes for the new plates to be welded throughout the car, im getting the plates done professinaonlly by the girlfreinds dad who works at that - so il have freshly cut and shaped plates..................................i like :D

also i have prepped and reapinted the petrol tank - pics coming soon
gearboxed painted pics - coming soon

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0218.jpg

i have to source some long bolts for it then i intend on either getting it "re-chromed" or sprayed white later on, no panic with it yet tho

some new NGK plugs,.......very nice :D

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0219.jpg

and a set of astra wheels i picked up cheap so i bought, i dont intend on putting them on but maybe a re-spray in white or anthracite (grey) to use as a set of spares if i get bored

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0212.jpg

and finallyy..................

some new plates i got made up by the girlfriends dad - thanks micky! for welding, quite happy with them and will avoid the drastic plates that is all too often seen on rebuilds

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0220.jpg

wel thats all for now

next plans are

- finish painting the engine & Source a new timing belt cover(or a better condition one than my current one)
- get ready for welding
- begin prepping and respraying the front arms along with front struts & suspension

the engine was rebuilt last year, so apart from the new plugs, leads maybe, airfilter and maybe a 4branch it will stay semi-standard, hard to beat a semi lol

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0252.jpg
my intention is to reapint alot in gloss black and white but i thaught the introduction to some blue bits may help the sr theme, there other one is the same i just took the photo of the one as the other was drying

some bush clamps (if thats what you call them) re-painted - look poo in the pics but once fitted i will get better pics
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0254.jpg
made a start on the hubs, i will eventaully remove the guard and spray it gloss white
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0257.jpg
polished the plate for the wiper motor, the motor has been sprayed white also (PICS TO COME) <---- whats with the caps lock?lol
anyway.........
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0259.jpg
new clutch plate needed before i build the gearbox back to the engine

these came in the post, theve got blue bits on them to continue the colour scheme.......very nice, these wee touches will help in the end
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0264.jpg

and the reason for the lack of updates........
the new toy for the summer
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0249.jpg
thumpstar 120 pro pitbike and lots of freshly cut silage fields for after work

17-06-09, 08:22 PM
wel yet again nothing major but just a little update to keep everybody happy

basically i had a fiddle

masked off the rest of it then sprayed the entire centire piece white

once dry i sanded the "lines" and OHC badge to bring up the bare metal so it would be white indent against bare metal whihc left this

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0276.jpg

not very nice was it, prob a painter with more pateince than me would make a good job but maybe its something il look at in the future

so once sanded down again i repainted it silver.........

and another little piece of art

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0256.jpg

and do you remeber i said i needed to buy more white paint

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0266.jpg

there it is :D..........also bought a new altenator belt, some high temp paint for the block and a new oil filter

heres the result...

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0279.jpg

how the head looks now, what do you think of the blue bolts? at first i was undecided but theve grown on me, add a bit of a kick of colour and ties in the colour SR scheme

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0278.jpg

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0277.jpg

i then fitted the starter (no good pics) and sprayed my top pulley, prob wont be seen but you gotta love being picky :D

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0282.jpg

dont worry there will be very little blue used from here on in....i feel thats enough

quite happy with my hours work

Looks good lad, its good to see u still tearin away at it! Maybe get some black stonechip for the splash guards etc and then that means you would only need a thin coat of underseal. The way I'd do it is: Prime, seam seal welds, stonechip, then thin layer of underseal or of course white paint, paint won't take too well to underseal but it will stick to stonechip... but I'd say you have it figured out anyway lad good luck

thanks maurice, il be there with the camera :)

not much of an update:

- finshed drivers side inner arch and it has got a goat of seam sealer and underseal awaiting stone chip

- passenger inner arch is 80% welded and all semas that are finshed have been sealed and 50% in underseal

- rear drivers arch - 50% finshed, 1 more problem area to sort

- drivers side sill has been took back to bare metal and strenghtned, currently fabricating it back to standard as best i can, it will then recive a layer of stonechip when the arches are being done

- rear o/s inner arch still needs attention but its pretty solid

- new stainless manifold nuts have been ordered from vauxhall and will be posted to me in the next week or so ( il post pics once i get them)

- in the process of buying a 4branch, the fellow has to find them

- in negotiaiton with dod to get a new standard rear bumper as my current one was cut to fit the mk1 side exit exhaust

over and out for now :d

stuartyj21

17-08-09, 10:30 PM
wel another small but ok update
yet agai pics speaks for themselves
inner drivers front inner guard welded and a coating of seam sealer for good luck
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0396.jpg
some etch then followed, i wasnt sure to etch it all but the next stage should resolve this
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0397.jpg
some weld pics i promised, bad quality but you get the idea, not bad for someone who never touched a welder until recently
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0394.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0393.jpg
some of the black stuff, i applied a genrous coating of this around all seams or areas where water may or could come into contact with,..................leaving this
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0398.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0409.jpg
same with pass side front
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0414.jpg
driver rear got the seam sealer then underseal
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0410.jpg
as i was just working my way from one arch to the other i was just doing anything i coould to make sure all areas have been treated
so i started taken off all the stonechip and protection with the wire brush attachemnt and all was gogin well until this, lol
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0400.jpg
o yeeeeeeaaaaaaa some holes....who doesnt love a hole now and again?lol
but wait........it has been sorted, i cut the majority of the infected sill out and fabricated 2 new plates for it and got them welded in, i dont want to see plates or evident welds so im still trying to blend the new metal in with the original sill
and finallllllly....some new purchases for the next stage, i protected the uderside of the car at the beginning but i wanted to buy my own stonchip gun, i new i wanted to give the car a nice even coat of stonechip i the arches so she can live as long as possible so i bought the stonechip gun and a nice big tin/cannister for the job
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0383.jpg
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg84/jafanan/Photo0385.jpg

Good to see that you are beaverin away lad, I will be walkin round it at a meet sometime in the future I'm sure. Weldin is great for someone thats not used to it, not a mission could I weld as good as that.

Lots of people say underseal is bad but I reckon its good as long as whats underneath it is rust free and well primed etc.

Rub strips can't be bought from Vauxhall as a complete seta nyway, you may be able to get 1 or 2 of them, and they are fairly big money too.

I'm painting the lower half of the TD as I can't get a vinyl to please me. Painter has a few samples done out for me, so have to take a run up and see them tomorrow night. Can let you know the outcome of that if you want?

perfect adrian, y apinter said he could replicate it but i wanted vinyl to leave it factory but if the vinyls not right id rather paint it, keep me posted

emmmm so a year later we have progress

not alot....but some. The car has been at Springhill body repair in moneymore

http://www.springhillcarbodyrepair.co.uk/

and jonny has got the car back on track with new rear arch, new boot floor etc. I had the engine bay and boot area blasted aswel to remove any surface rust that had started from storage. The car has been partially stripped with all glass removed etc ready for paint. All Exterior panels and engine bay were brought back and treated

Car whould be painted within a few weeks then the long haul of building it

After waiting this long im im no panic so i plan on gathering all the bits needed, bottom arms, rear beam etc and getting them powder coated and all bolts etc going to get dipped

il let the pictures do the talking

ok so i should have the nova back in a few weeks time now the painter has a few week or 2 to work on it.

Now im faced with 2 decision

the lower vinyl, to buy the replica vinyl of ebay as no local places to me has a vinyl that matches

OR

paint it, the painter says hes happy to paint it but im not so sure

also, i want to protect the arches and underside as theyve been brought back to metal and primed, should i: seam seal, then stonechip then black underseal OR seam seal, stonechip then paint white

whats your opinions on white or black inner arches? sometimes i think the white underneath looks tacky

dannymcc
18-09-12, 04:41 PM
I would paint the lower half if it was mine, the stuff on fleabay is only good for a Mk1 SR imo.

rear beam and all back brakes have been rebuilt and painted, all front arms have ben repainted and are ready for fitting, all new trackrods ends, balljoints etc

dont want to fit the new rear parts incase the stonechip is skit everywhere

more new bits, very happy to have found these brand new side strips from germany thats cant be got from vauxhall anymore, seems the mk1 sets are far easier found

Saw this on facebook and remembered it from here, great transformation! Looks fantastic now.

Just wondering, whats the rear suspension setup? looks like std shocks, 60mm springs and some sort of raised spring platform on the rear beam? Wouldnt some 40mm springs be a better bet?

Also any info on the paint for the vinyl? (or is that a secret? lol) And did the old rub strips sell? Cheers

Yes the platform i used instead of 60s as it sat high with standard springs and the 60s didnt sit tight with the new shocks so used these, thinking about buying some new rear gaz coilovers for it

Parked back in the shed now, look at it again after christmas and finish it off
