whats this area like for the mot ?
is it within distance of a structural area that needs be solid ?
i have a slightly bigger than 50p ish sized hole with surrounding rust on the n/s/r boot floor, at the very back of the car, left of the support brace thingy, but not as far as the metal by the light housing... if u get me ?
what will this be like on the mot ?
will it need be welded up ?
i forget the rules with rust by structural, wasnt it 10 cm's ?
Depends what your Mot tester is feeling like that day. The 5door passed with the rot in the boot corner.
Its problery within the structal areas (rear chassis leg) but isnt it like 10inchs from any suspension joint/mounting?

i thought it was 6 inches from the nearest structural piece. cut a plate and lay it in and say your welder is busy :thumb:

must be clean within 30cm of suspension components

but as far as i know, MOT testers are not allowed to move anything, i.e carpets, sideskirts etc to check for rust...

No but if they lift the boot carpet to check if there's a spare tyre and that it's in good condition (which they can do afaik), then they have the oppertunity to check the floor.

they cant lift the carpet, they are only allowed to check VISIBLE items. if you own a porsche and its got a full undertray the cant remove it, the only time they can fail it is if they see a fluid leak at the edges. wanna kno any more daft rules just ask

If you lived in N Irealnd them you would know about it, they can do anything and though they aren't to do it I've seen the guy poking with screwdivers, cars over here must be 100% rot free.

exactly what my boot is full of lol it was rather amusing watching the face of the MOT tester when he opened the boot, he just looked at me and shuck his head lollol
If you know its there just get a plate put in for now so that its one less thing to fail on imho.

5op size hole? call me daft, but can you not just get it welded lol
If the spare wheel in the car then it will be tested, so they can lift the carpet and if they can see rust, they'll then look from the bottom.
Gaffer tape it up and it'll pass, its only if it has exposed sharp edges and sloth is right they aren't even allowed to remove a wheel trim to check it has all the wheel bolts present and correct

a good friend of mine had her old mk2 cav. failed for a hole in the sill, and it had been punched thru with a phillips size1 screwdriver. I welded the hole up & painted it up. the tester did the other sill the same & failed it again, at that point, my friend got out the photo of the mot rust test hammer that I had downloaded, and a screwdriver & asked him which car was his, as she wanted to test his car. he changed it to a pass, & she never used the garage again... moral = don't mess with my friend sally...

If your gonna tape it up, then you might as well fix it.
I agree Benn I'd rather it be right myself but I think taping it up is slightly easier if your not in the trade
Yes and no, you only need to remove the carpet, take it to a small bodyshop that will plate it, cosr you 30 max. As its just a flat plate.

yeh i wanna weld it up, but lack of money for a garage rip-off. ive only one friend that has a decent enough welder, and i might not be able to use his gear in time, so wanted to know my options if any.
i suppose i could stick the spare topside of the carpet so he wont bother lifting it, or i could duck tape... or both, we'll see.
depends how much he knows i guess, any decent tester that knows anything about nova's will know its a common spot and will look automatically i woulda thought. but with a bit of luck i can get it done in time, looking at it earlier, its going on the other side in the same spot too.. so will need both sides of a frosties box for 2 templates, and double weldies.
whats the best way of finishing the job off once welded ? is there anything i can paintbrush on in one hit ? something that will keep the rust at bay and is long lasting.
also getting this rattling bump from the o/s/r. might be strut bushes ? i need to investigate.
i fkin hate mot's ! my last nova went thru ok on everything for 2 years, but needed £300 welding done each time. firstly under the radiator, and secondly i dont even know where, they just charged me alotta money.

as you know, it really depends on the person that tests it! try your best to make it passible as best you can, before you take it! they will test your car and do there job, its what they do lol if you tell them about the hole before they test it they may just advise you to get it fixed? as long as they dont find any other minnor fails imo!! like bulbs ect ect

Mine was the same, the rear ended up being more plate than chassis lol.
