that is a light car at 640 lol
i thought the other day, does anyone ever take in to account the paint on the car, may sound stupid but i bought some wings and they had 9 layers of paint on, surely this adds some weight lol.

i think every racer should just strip their cars and laquer them

I know alot of them get them blasted, but never heard of them burning the shells !!
I can imagine a lot of them just giving them a light coating of paint as well, lightweight fixings, skinning panels ect ...
I'm in the middle of building a Class 6 Autograss Nova, not a lot left of it once you get the grinder going !!
I'm reckoning that should be under 600kg ? its gotta have a fair cage in it tho, just cheapo seamed tube so could've saved a bit of weight on that, on a budget tho so the cheaper the better !!

yeh another thing i thought, instead of welding all the way round, just weld like two patches less weight?

Mine.

Its has half an engine, no wheels, no seats/belts, no calipers or disc's, no fluid in at all.

I would be happy with 600kg, obviously lighter the better but certain things like the gearbox, calipers, bigger wheels etc all weigh more than what people usually use.

Im looking at other things as well that will technically make the car heavier........ BUT will make it peform better. :D

Yes, I did sell that hillclimb/sprint Nova - it's now living in Ireland.

My current Nova (the red, wide-arched one) weighed 625kg with a 1400 XE in it. That is using fibreglass roof, full roll cage, spaceframed rear end, carbon fibre doors, bonnet and tailgate, as well as an aluminium floorpan and magnesium wheels (but still in road legal trim).

You're not going to get a Nova much under 600kg, unless you go down the spaceframe and composite body route.

Andrew Bradley's current 993cc turbo is the lightest Nova I am aware of, I'd have to dig out the numbers, but I believe it was around 550kg. Andrew built that with a one-off T45 cage, 13" wheels, small brakes, and a serious amount of skilled fabrication. And of course it's nowhere approaching road legal.

I have a set of digital corner weight scales, if anyone wants their Nova's weight checked.........

Just imagine a line of Nova's waiting to get in the farm to get there weight checked.

Could offer a free weight check with every purchase Colin!

Just out of curiosity how much did your Escort weigh?

Last season 1070kg, this year it should be under 1050kg, thanks to a series of small losses.

I haven't finished bolting it back together yet, but when it's done, I will weigh it again.

It's very light for a 4WD. And should have approaching 550bhp when the new turbo goes on soon.

I do plan to do a Project thread on it when I get time.

The previous one was LHD, unfortunately this is what happened to it in November 2007;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/0112.jpg

It caught fire whilst I was testing it at a track, and burnt uncontrollably until the Fire Brigade arrived. Only the gearbox was salvaged from the wreckage, and I bought the white and green Escort to replace it.

Sorry to rub salt in the wounds as i too would be very bitter but wasnt it a fire that killed off the B11OVA?

No, B11 OVA got broken up and sold off in pieces.

The Escort was the first, and hopefully the last time I experience a car fire. It went up so fast I barely had time to get out of it. And seeing many hundreds of hours development, and a whole lot of money go up in flames was not a nice experience.

I did have a few Escort Cosworth shells sat around, as I was planning to build another one from scratch, but then a suitable complete car came up for sale at a decent price, and I bought that instead.

Wow colin! Insurance pay out?

Eventually, yes. If it hadn't, it would have been the end of my racing for a very long time.

Fortunately the insurance was arranged by me when I was working for the insurance company, so I was able to harass all the right people to get it sorted out!

Did you get to find out what the cause was? I was going to say it must have been quite an intense fire as like you said first off there are fire crews at the tracks and they dont normally hang about, so for it to go like that in a short space of time must have been devastating.

The fire started somewhere around the fuel rail, we'll never know for sure but it seems likely that the rail or a union on the fuel pipe fractured and sprayed fuel all over the red-hot engine bay. Unfortunately I had filled the tank full of fuel only a few laps earlier. Most of the panels on the car were carbon fibre, and the wheels were magnesium, so it didn't take long to get up. I was testing miles from anywhere, and the Fire truck got there within 10 minutes, which was incredible, but it was too late to save it.

Lokoing at those pics, is that the remains of an ATL fuel cell in the back??

Yes, the fuel cell was in an alloy box where the rear seat would be normally.

Anyone know the weight of a standard nova 1.4 SR (1989)? Im sure it says on the car but I am 100 miles away from the car and anyone care to take a guess at what mine weighs now? I should really try and get it weighed one day.

Its got a c20let with f28, quaife diff, full roll cage, comp mos, dash still in and inside just two bucket seats and harnesses. I thought around 1100kg but seeing people with such low weights im really unsure now.

The SR models are 770kg.

I would have thought you'd be around 850kg with your spec.

Jesus, theres nothing left of the alloy box you mentioned! For a fire to rip through a car that quick, that must have been some bloody heat!! Once the fuel cell is purged, as your probably aware, game over car

Was that a works shell Colin? Or just an imported LHD shell?

Was that a works shell Colin? Or just an imported LHD shell?

Tragically it was an ex-works car, it had been driven by McRae, Sainz and Delecour. That made the whole thing a lot worse, all that history destroyed.
