I've got an astra 1.6 8v engine and the breather pipe is pointed down at the ground, ive heard that u should point it towards the filter, some people say at the side, the back and undernieth.
What is the right story?
Neil
where it is should be fine.

You could get an oil brather filter, stops things getting messy. As long as you clean it out frequently. They only cost about a tenner.

Where is the breather pipe situated? i cant seen 2 find mine! they did have 1 in a gte engine didnt they?????
yep it comes off as a thich metal pipe next to the starter then goes into the rocker box, from here it comes out the back of the rocker box then into the inlet where the idle ajustment is. (black rubber hose)
oil breather pipes are to stop emissions of oil fumes which are deemed to be dangerous and polluting. They usually go back into the rocker cover like dicko says and/or into the carb/air filter/intake ducting. They have no useful relevance to the running of the engine and can be directed anywhere so long as they allow crankcase fumes out and dont allow water/shit in.
