Me and my pal Greg picked up this Nova today for a track/autotest project
It can't be put back on the road for scrapyard reasons etc so tracking it was our planned and only option
Ade will vouch for how clean this car is - The pic's don't really do it any justice but heres the pictures
Not wanting to give too much away but plans etc will be posted up as of when they are confirmed:

Jesus who let the monkey lose with the rattle can inside!
Dont look too bad dude. I guess it was scraped/written off due to the front end damage?
vaughanmc
15-03-09, 10:14 PM
Nope when my dad seen it back in October 08 the car was mint apart from the passenger window smashed and ignition being busted
But something must have landed on the bonnet etc to have caused that damage
Also found out tonight that the car has a 1.3 SR engine in it with a SPI system and also 5 speed gearbox lol
Wilson - You can have them if you want mate - £10 ?
looks clean man, looking forward to seeing it progress
vaughanmc

Should be going white inside and the underside as well to make it look better and the Hammerite should preserve the shell a bit more
Probably cake it with Waxoyl too :)

Alloys will come soon enough Dave don't worry lol
Last night's update:
Me and my dad got the passenger window in it and all the remains of glass out the car so its nice and tidy (ready for paint) also the rear seatbelts and parcel shelf supports came out as well
We also got another bonnet from greg1.4 last night and fired it on and it looks good
We put a black grill on it as well
Just need a couple more wee bits to round it all off then get it out for testing at the track :)
The orange/black theme is really coming together now :D
vaughanmc
19-03-09, 08:06 AM
Last night we put the suspension from the TD shell on the car
Quite a nice height at the front but its very stiff and the back we put some -60mm Koni springs on it with the shocks that were on the car which look uprated as the back is stiff as f*ck lol (there a shiney blue colour the shocks)
Need to get the back ARB from the TD onto this Nova and possibly the front thicker tie-bars
Bought some white Hammerite paint as well so going to crack on with the inside
More at the weekend... :thumb:

We cracked on with the painting inside the car tonight, ran out of Hammerite as you do but most of the floor is done - Another tin and we should be sorted
Also changed the orange dash parts over for some original black plastic ones! Looks a lot lot better now :)

Cheers man!
We're going to keep the 1.3 SR 8v engine for a wee while as it should be nice and quick and light for the autotesting and not too bad for round the track
Never ever heard or seen a 1.3 SR engine with a Single Point setup on it...

aye the shell's in excellent condition considering its been sitting about with a busted window in a scrappy for over 6 months - done some good work there lad - look forward to see this wizz round knockhill...
Ade
you get it running yet? prob that dodgy spi set up!
vaughanmc
24-03-09, 07:35 AM
Greg - Aye it's a perfect wee project due to it needing NO welding at all :) The wee 1300 8v engine should be good!
Jimbo - We brushed on white Hammerite and it looks really good actually, another coat and some more bits touched in should finish it off
Ade - We're taking it to Kames 1st to give it a good run then probably Knockhill next year. The engine fired up with some jump-leads on it and 1st turn of the...screwdriver lol

vaughanmc
30-03-09, 07:58 PM
Got the GSi 6-dial clocks from Lewis in and all working - Looks a lot better than the crappy standard dials and should be better for the autotesting etc due to the battery gauge and oil pressure gauge
Got the inside all painted finally and the front two seats back in (standard ones for now) as I think/hope the car is going away to do its 1st grass-autotest on Sunday 5th
We also fired on the grass-tyres but we're waiting on one being fixed to we can have 4 good chunky tyres on the car for maxiumum grip
Here's a couple of pics from earlier *note the clocks aren't in correctly - speedo cable issue*

14-04-09, 10:57 PM
Nice little shell by the looks of it ! i'm guessing that you managed to pick it up on the cheap ? i know that looks obviously arn't the main priority but please change the wing mirrors lol what are the long term plans for it then ? i'm guessing some bucket seats and perhaps a cage ? perhaps bin the SPI set-up in future and bang on some bike carbs etc ... ? best of luck with it all anyhow :)
vaughanmc
14-04-09, 11:11 PM
Bucket seats and a roll cage are definately on the cards! We don't really need the mirrors but we have some standard ones there lol
Probably fire on an old single Weber or maybe 40's if the funds allow
We need the cat out it 1st lol
novalewis
27-04-09, 02:36 PM
have you had this out yet for a wee spin?
craig green
27-04-09, 03:12 PM
Looks cool. I'd imagine the SPI has a rev limiter so will certainly be a hinderance in that dept, assuming it fuels OK.
Can't believe you have std (non sport) seats in it though...
vaughanmc
27-04-09, 04:31 PM
Lewis - Aye we had it out at Kames once but the distributor went on it and we're in the process of fitting a new one and painting the inner arches white and tidying up the front suspension
Still got a few wee jobs to do
Craig - We should hopefully be picking up some SR seats for it then possibly looking to buy some rally buckets once we have more cash :)
dougie_boi
27-04-09, 07:08 PM

vaughanmc
27-04-09, 07:40 PM
Do they pivot or do they slide back and forward ? lol
Hard to explain that one...
dougie_boi
27-04-09, 07:49 PM
dont think they pivot lol just slide back and forth and flip down for rear passengers mate
vaughanmc
27-04-09, 07:50 PM
Hmm we'd need to try them one time - Much would you be looking for ?
Or is it free to a good home ? :D
dougie_boi
27-04-09, 07:53 PM

vaughanmc
27-04-09, 07:55 PM

A strutbrace my dad got for free, plenty of clearance with the SPI intake and it should be beneficial round the track:

Update time:
The 1300 SR engine is due to be ripped out in the next couple of days hopefully - All the bottles, pipes, hoses, inlet and exhaust manifold are off ready for the engine to be hauled out
Going to try and source another similar sized engine with some mods on it like a Cam and 4-branch etc then we'll rip the cat out
Hopefully be on the track later on this year :thumb:
Pics to come at some point :)
why is the engine getting changed ?
vaughanmc
05-08-09, 04:43 PM
The big ends are away I think - Mega reeky (blue) knocks all the time and its really down on power
Maybe try and rebuild it and keep it as a spare or sell it on...
vaughanmc
06-08-09, 03:26 PM

Thank f*ck that's by
Just need to clean the engine bay up and get it painted etc then source the new engine and maybe rebuild the old 1300 8v engine that came out

Picked up the new engine last night - 1400 SR, 4 branch, High-Lift Cam but only a single carb at the moment - Going to invest in a set of 40's
Also got an F13 CR box with it and bought a spare F13 CR box during the week
No idea when the engine will be going in but everything is there to get it running...I hope :thumb:

Need to keep the K plate in good nick as well as it's my only road car
connor c
25-12-09, 06:54 PM

vaughanmc
25-12-09, 06:55 PM
Orange Nova needs little to no money spent on it - Just time and knowledge
The K plate...Hmm just keep it clean and tidy and well looked after as I kinda need it to get to college etc
Once the Mk1 is done I'll take the K reg off the road and give it a wee freshen up :thumb:

Some new/up to date random pictures of this shell
The 1400 8v SR engine is coming out to go into my Mk1 Nova so this will just be a spare shell that'll not be used for a long time - I'm sure we'll find a use for it one day in the future though lol
Anyway heres some pictures of it from today - Still in outstanding condition:

Not putting another engine in it until my Mk1 is done - Just going to keep this for a spare shell :)
Spare shell is always good
Even if its just for filling up with parts lol

Was that spax sticker on the car when you got it, or has it found it way there from some of the ones i sold ages ago? lol

Took the SPI engine loom out of the Nova today so we can start to strip the bay down and get it took back to bare metal and etch primered - I think this shell is going School Bus Yellow as we can get it done for free or cheap and it'd be a cool colour for a track/autotest car
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Orange%20Shell/SV203508.jpg
Looks crap because of all the different colours but it's solid:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Orange%20Shell/SV203509.jpg
Very clean battery tray!
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Orange%20Shell/SV203510.jpg
One wee bit of welding needed - Probably be a bit more but it's nothing for a K plate shell:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Orange%20Shell/SV203511.jpg
Just going to strip it slowly - Try and divide my time up between this and the Mk1 T40 project
The joys! lol Comments welcome
Cheers, Vaughan

I will mate :) Just don't want to rush it and cut corners so I'll try and pace myself with it but I'll get stuff done with it very soon
Didn't realise you were doing this as well as the MK1 lol
At least you will never be short of things to do!

This shell sits in the garage and collects dust and rubbish but it's clean underneath all the sh*t lol
Needs a couple of wee plates but NO replacement panels :thumb: That's my kind of project lol
Running the K plate red Nova, doing up the Mk1 as well as this lol Hard going! But none are costing/owing me money so I can/could pull out at anytime and not be losing anything!
Looks a good shell though which is the main thing for motorsport. Nothing worse than starting a competition car build and having to replace half the metal on the shell.

Not too bothered about cutting everything out it to save weight - Aslong as seats and interior panels aren't fitted I'm happy :)

Had some news about some Grass Autotests that are coming up in the next week or 2 so we're going to get our finger out and try and get this Nova to them
Fitting a 1.4 8v Astra engine to it, either a single carb or some 40's, tank to re-fit, hoses, some interior bits
Hopefully get some progress and pictures during the week :)

The car got moved out my garage on Monday night and swapped with my mates yellow Nova GTE track car
Tuesday night the 1400 SR 8v engine got fitted and F10 box
Wednesday the fuel tank, standard suspesion (For grass tracking/ground clearance etc)
Then on Friday we got the engine running with 40's and some other wee bits and pieces tied up
Then yesterday got the car all setup with throttle linkage, clutch and gears so it now drives again!
It had been sitting in my garage for nearly a year with no engine etc and in nearly a week it's a car again lol
Got a couple of other wee bits and pieces to finish then it's good to go for Sunday's grass autotest :)

Didn't manage to get any pictures from the trackday we went to but we had a couple of issues anyway - The fuel breather that attatches to the filler neck wasn't on right and every time you turned left the car was spraying fuel onto the right/rear wheel and making it spin out of control lol So once we got that sorted we got a good few runs in the car
The wee engine goes and pulls very well and the noise is amazing! Can't wait to get back out in it! Really needs better seats, cage etc etc
Some pics in my garage:
