cant get 2nd gear,1.4sr

right,my mate has a 1.4sr and basically he cant get 2nd gear,might be 4th aswell,but he said if he takes off the selcetor housing it will go into gear,but as soon as he puts the cover back on he cant get the gear again,does this make sense,il try and find out more info,unless you have any ideas to suggest from the info ive given,cheers tony

Have you tried re-alligning the gear linkage? if not i'd go for that first before doing anything else. Check for play in the likage pin bushes too.

check the engine mounts, i had one fail & the gears went wonky...
