Yo guys, this is my first project thread, i have always secretly wanted a nova since my brother owned two! so me and a bunch of mates decided to do an XE conversion but soon realised it was a bad idea due to small tiffs and everybody having different plans/ideas?? We got as far as fitting the engine and hearing it run, which was awesome!! but then the shell was stripped and binned:cry:
So i decided to do a project of my own, i bought my car planning on putting it in my dads repair centre but he is mega busy at the mo so there isn't much space. Since i cant work on the shell i thought i may as well get on with the engine and gearbox.
The slow progress so farlol :-
was going to just paint up the gearbox
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0077.jpg
then realised it probably wont be a while til i get my nova in so started stripping it
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0116.jpg
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0117.jpg
no signs of major wear so gave it a well deserved clean
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0121.jpg
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0120.jpg
then theese arrived
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0113.jpg
so it was time for the good part, paint and rebuild
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0123.jpg
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0124.jpg
fitted new seals and copper greased the release bearing
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0122.jpg
re-set the main shaft
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0126.jpg
Before i forgot i made sure i machined the gearbox mount bolt to prevent from any contact
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0289.jpg
then vwalaa

Been fiddling around with lots wires and eventually fitted these with my brother
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0184.jpg
gotta say it would of took twice as long without the article of here! it was a great help and a lot easier than i thought it would be:thumb:
after playing around with his Gsi my attention is on the cylinder head, like the gearbox i wanted strip it and replace any worn parts.. but after a real good inspection i'm told it all seems fine and would just be a waste of time and money so just gave it a good clean up instead.

then recieved my new engine stand:D
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0159.jpg
Now that i can finally make a start on the block i got round to lightening my flat/early type flywheel i bought a couple of week back to replace the thick heavy later one
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/th_Video0007.jpg (http://s600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/?action=view¤t=Video0007.flv)

17-03-09, 10:39 PM
Quick update, managed to get the block onto the engine stand which makes life so much easier;) , especially when removing the crank bolt:wtf: them things are stupidly tight!! but got it out (a tap with a hammer,a bit of heat and a very long pole)lol with that done i fitted the brand new oil/water pumps
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0169.jpg
also been on the lathe again, i wanted to keep the late type alternator which has the far to wide multi ribbed pulley. So i took the bore dimensions off the later pulley and the outer measurements from the earlier one and made this
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0147.jpg
pretty cool eh??:D but then my day was ruined when i came home to find this
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0163-1.jpg
:(

auzzy-b
19-03-09, 07:44 PM
Thanks Riggy, i also work cnc's but i'm always jumping on the manuals, well did... i'm now leaving on friday because i'm looking elsewhere (worked at my place for far too long:roll: ) Hey and i may hold you up to that offer one day as i remember you and (adam, i think) saying.. 'you can have these fitted in no time' :thumb::thumb::D lol
auzzy-b
21-03-09, 08:45 PM
At last i got some bits i ordered and got chance to make two of these ...
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0194.jpg
thought it would be a good idea to make things nice and tight with these ally bushes i made to rid of any sloppy play that you get with them nasty plastic ones
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0196.jpg
i fitted the other to my brothers Gsi and they work great!:thumb:
Also painted up the inlet manifold and bought a new early/flat type clutch kit
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0197.jpg
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0192.jpg

i finally managed to find some time to crack on a bit now so cleaned the block out and checked everything looked ok..which it does
made sure any seal faces where good and clean like so
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0208.jpg
did the breather mod:cool:
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0209.jpg
found this in the post:)
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0203.jpg
so wrapped up the manifold, fitted sump, new timing kit and bolted down the cylinder head
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0188.jpg
was chuffed to find my home made pulley fits and suits the belt nicely
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0215.jpg
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0213.jpg
quickly bodged up a little engine trolley which should come in real handy when fitting the engine
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0290.jpg
bolted pretty much everything up and put my lil invention to test and it works, it didnt break!!
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0291.jpg
petty much finished now:D just need to repaint my rocker cover...
O... then make a start on the car itselflol
auzzy-b
29-03-09, 11:52 PM
Rite i have been taking a good look at the shell and now think it may not be such a good idea using it for the 2ltr conversion! The reason being its not the strongest i have seen, the chassis legs in the engine bay are not to healthy and slighlty rotten:roll:
So i'm now on the hunt for another but can't decide what to go for??
either between:-
Mk1
Mk1 track looking road car (basically stripped)
Mk2
clean up the legs and make something individual :D
auzzy-b
30-03-09, 12:03 AM
Well i thought about cleaning it up.. but prefer the idea of starting off with a stronger shell.
Suppose it will depend on what comes up as i like both Mk's anyways
thats a good read mate. 1 question, have you balanced your flywheel?
auzzy-b
30-03-09, 01:46 PM
yes, i used the balancing machine were i worked, been balanced to the mili gram:p lol all though i was told by two ex vauxhall mechanics that there is no need because the balacing is so far out on the crank from the factory anyways....?
But i did anyways.. like to be sure ill have no problems later on!
auzzy-b
06-04-09, 11:15 AM
My brothers finally made a few mods to his nova.
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0217.jpg
new mud flaps, red pin stripes (from halfords), clear rears, Cleaned up the Gsi sideskirts
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0216.jpg
and got rid of the chavy mesh grillelol
Back to how it should be....looking good:) just wants some paint on the wheels now but he's not sure what colour to go with??
vaughanmc
06-04-09, 11:17 AM
Does look really good - Those clear rear lights suit the lighter colour'd Nova's
A perfect example he has got! :)
auzzy-b
06-04-09, 11:22 AM

Not a fan of the clear rears myself.
I think he should get the wheels redone in star silver and with a bit of tyre slick will look great.
looks smart that buddy any news on them pics?

Mini project im starting whilst im still on the hunt for my nova, i want (need) to somehow mount a tom tom into the dashboard since i cant go anywhere without navi because im hopeless when it comes to remembering roadslol
Thought the middle air vents would be a good place for it to sit, so i have bought spare to play around with...
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0355.jpg
now just to figure how to mount it? i obviously want to make it removeable to stop any TEAVES from grabbing it!!
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0356.jpg
Hmmmm....?
Cut and fibreglass the surround, then just sit it in place with velcro on the bottom/back? Easily removable
Looks like this is going to be a sweet project mate! What sort of Nova are you after and i'll keep an eye out for ya ;)

Fibreglass could be a good way to go but i have never used the stuff and when not done properly i think it can look cheap and tacky, good option tho:)

Cheers bud! im after something like a standard 1.2 in real good nik preferably, mk1 or 2
i like both shapes.. but ill want to fit a GTE front end either way, think they look cool as:d just not sure wether to strip it into a track looking car or keep it as a road car?
Been keeping an eye on your project to, think you putting a 200psi Vxr engine in nova is awesome!! good on ya

FINALLY!! after having no stereo for two week!(which has been a nightmare coping with nothing but noise from a stupidly loud exhaust). I bought and fitted my new one:)
It was annoying to see that someone had cut off the block connector from the wires tho:tard: how numb!
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0402.jpg
pain in the butt. but sorted it, new stereo out

Also bought some new strengthened corsa control arms/wishbones
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/QSJ1657S1.jpg
almost got everything i need ready to be fitted!
auzzy-b
05-11-09, 08:48 PM
I was also playing around with the suspension not long ago, im thinking of buying a Gaz coilovers kits because the rear is really hard..
i tryed a few different springs to see if they would make any difference
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0421.jpg
^
these are a set of G-max springs compared to the original Gsi
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0420.jpg
^
and these are the ones that came with the coilover kit currently on the car, even thou there was a big difference in ride height there didn't seem to be any affect in comfort, so if anyone has any advice for what setup/kit to go for that would be great:thumb:
very nice lil project :)
im guessing its a late type engine if your exchanging the fly?
top work boyo :thumb:

Yea it is a late type well spotted;) i mainly switched the flywheels because the pot/late type ones are horrible heavy lumps!!

Great progress mate, loving the homemade lightened flywheel and the ally pulley. Isn't it great when you have all the tools you need to crack on with the job. Shame you didn't make a few more sets of the pulley I would have probably took a set off your hands.
Looking forward to seeing this finished, should be a good'un :thumb:

lol There a pain arn't they!! Yes it is a Gsi rad i checked it aginst the original, i thought they looked a bit small myself when i first saw them? but its big enough for my 12" slim fan ive fitted to it!:) i bought it locally from a shop called ABS for £60.
Nova_Tek
13-03-10, 10:36 PM
Maybe it's the angle, but that seems to look more oblong like the smaller rads rather than square. £60 isn't too bad. Funny how I picked up two Cav MK3 SRi rads for £30 brand new and £32 brand new last month and the cheapest Nova GTE rad is £60, injustice I say!

Nova_Tek

well I'm in no rush to buy a rad now so will just hold out for one at a good price. Haven't bought the slim fan yet as I was first looking to buy the 'bigger' GTE rad, then measure it up an get a big slimline for it. Now that I know my rad is the one then I'll be shoppin for one.
You got a 12" fan? Any pics with the fan offered up to the rad?

Nice one mate, 12'' seems to be a good size and should cool the rad well. Are you gonna attach the fan to the rad with cable ties or you got a less bodge method?
auzzy-b
14-03-10, 09:35 PM
Its already fixed in place i used a rad fixing kit (ebay) you can see the on the pics, basically you just poke cable tie like straps through the rad and secure them using caps which are spring loaded.

If its what I think you mean then yes, its correct. The Y at the throttle body isn't really needed. You can bypass it and go straight to the outlet on the head, but I'm guessing if you have the kit the hose won't be long enough?

looking at the colour of the other wires (brown/blue, green, blue) would i be rite in saying i could feed them back through the car and wire them directly to the xe loom. They will be for the ecu warning light, tachometer, temp sensor etc, wont they?
Yea you should be able to run them into car mate and reuse most of them to power the XE's loom.

26-03-10, 11:12 PM
^thats not a bad idea! i suppose if i really wanted i could even pull the wires form the xe loom through and wire to the female connector for that plug and just simply connect them together...? but it would mean snipping the old gsi engine loom to get it which i dont really want to do!
Do the rev counter/temp sensor go direct to the dials or via the ecu?

If you've got the two wires as I see it in the picture there, have you tried joing them together with a temp crimp to see if it sorts the issue first? Your wire that will got to the EML on the dash should come from one of the 3 connectors in the footwell (forget which).

auzzy-b

Just found these from a while back, the fuel pump relay! has the brown/blue wire coming from it which i guess goes to pin 3 of the ecu as COMTONCJ said. But the i dont know were the red/blue wire that has been cut in the pic goes? currently my pump is connected to the thicker red/blue wire...
http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt87/austen-b/Photo0501.jpg

Ok.
Is the fuel pump relay near the ecu plug ie in the footwell? If so...
You just need to run the blue, green, & brown/blue wires to the back of the dash. Personally I would make a plug n play scenario for it or even better go to a scrappy and cut out the 3 plugs (car side & engine side) and put them back in.
The red/blue goes to the fuel pump (as you know). Again, I would look to wire these into a plug.
I may even have the 3 plugs up the shed spare but not sure when I can get up there next.
Ignore the pin 3 to ecu malarky.

You just need to run the brown/blue wires to the back of the dash..
So you mean both of them? Does the one coming from the fuel relay not matter.. you dont have a diagram for the relay as well do you??
auzzy-b

The red/blue goes to the fuel pump (as you know).
its definatley the ticker one? Any ideas what the other (cut one) does?

Thicker one goes to pump. The thinner one - you sure its not blue with ared stripe? If so thats not needed as its for ABS.

Cheers Riggy it shouldnt be to long now! just got to get the exhaust fitted, fit the bonnet bumper, get it mot'd etc:)
I got a chance to fix my fuel leak at last, fitted all new PTFE lined stainless braided hosing. Not bad for £3 per metre at HPS, they also cut it all to length, supplied & fitted fittings for no extra cost top blokes:thumb:

Its easy mate, just buy an iso connector and cut the wires so your left with the adapter that fits into your cd player, will look something like this
http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/thumb.php?image=catimages/accs/iso.jpg&thumb_width=250 (http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/catimages/accs/iso.jpg)
then its just a case of connecting the wires, theres only three wires that actually run your headunit, red-perminant live, black-ignition live, orange-signal (from memory) the rest is just the speakers which is simples!
Ill take a pic of mine and pm you with it:thumb:

That's because normally, like with everything in life, when your dream or imaging something you tend to over estimate so it's not always as good as you thought it'd be.
For me, I had plans of going big block for a very long time. At first I was looking at turbo'ing an 20NE, as I had a spare one from a Cav, but the costs involved to do it properly were gonna be more than buying a LET. Then I thought about the XEV, then the XE. In the end I thought 'I'm doing all this work and I really don't wanna say 'wish I had put the LET in there'.
auzzy-b
06-05-10, 10:50 PM
^ive never really looked into LET's how much would you roughly pay for one that included the gearbox, loom etc? See i havn't even played with mine yet!! and im already thinking about turbos lol
£1300 ish for a LET and F28. Sounds a lot but the performance between it and an XE can't really be compared, especially as £200 spent on the LET can get you about 280bhp.

OK there not faster then some frigging supper cars that are ££££££££££ but there faster then your top end saloon/hatches that come in at £25/35K etc.

Thing with this is that it'll vary from XE to XE. A RR wouold be interesting to see if it's making good power, or anywhere near standard.

Fitted my new loom today and it all work perfik! as it should:d the one i have noticed thou is that my ecu warning light is constantly on? i have checked all the plugs are connected etc and they are so anybody know why this mite be?
Anyways chuft thats done and dusted! can finally fit the dash back in and get the exhaust sorted.. then she'l be back on the road in no time:)
Is the ecu light on even with the ignition off auzzy?
If not ands its on when the engines running id flash the codes.
The ECU light will be on all the time while the ignition is on, and should go out when you start it.
Have you flashed the codes?
From the green plug, put the brown/yellow to earth and it flash the ECU lights like the paper-clip method. That why in my pic the brown/yellow wire has been bared :)

08-05-10, 02:55 PM

I found out the coolant temp sensor was faulty so fitted a new one and it's now running fine.. so back to the garage and fitted a new baffle sump gasket and steel sump (ally one was cracked) but still leaking eek! oil was coming from the pump so I checked the release valve, all good!
