After posting a few pics in another thread and getting some good feedback, i decided id open a thread on my 'homemade' corsa turbo project.

WARNING: if you are easily offended by someone building a car on a tight budget, making manifolds from scratch, spray painting in a barn, and using parts that arent chrome and from a demon tweeks catalogue then please read a different thread.:thumb:

......Ive always fancied a 1.6 8v turbo car, sooooo i bought myself a little corsa off fleabay for £150

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss74/dirtydog25/DSC06964.jpg

had a bit of rust down the bottom of the rear wheel arches but apart from that not a bad little beast for the money!

started stripping her down asap

vaux mustard yellow with a pink pearl on top.
reason i did it this colour is because the guy that helped me paint it owned a nova turbo years ago, did a 14.2 1/4 mile using a 16se and it was this colour. i always wanted to buy it off him but couldnt afford it. so now im re-incarnating it as a corsa but with my own style!

Dirtydog1
09-03-09, 08:12 PM
i cant find any more pics of the varios processes at the mo, but i have made a rear disc beam for it with the stub axles welded 25mm higher so the car looks nice on 60mm nova springs, v6 front brakes drilled to fit 4 stud,

had to make dumpy ht leads so they didnt melt on the exhaust housing!

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss74/dirtydog25/DSC04042.jpg

the engine is built and running, il get some better pics of how it stands at the moment this week!

cheers bud seen a fue 1.6t about just wunderd how they were built never realy looked into one.

Dirtydog1
09-03-09, 09:06 PM
you used to be able to buy a conversion kit, but they were quite expensive.
not realy an option for me! alot of people use a t2, my mate, who's nova is pictured a few pages back used a t3.

total_vauxhall
09-03-09, 09:14 PM
so most turbos wold do the job aslong as they oviusly aint massive

Dirtydog1
09-03-09, 09:18 PM
doesnt realy matter what size, a t3 is probably big enough too big and there wont be enough exhaust gases to spin it up.
its more what boost you put into it that matters! if im right, a smaller turbo will spool up faster but max out sooner. im not realy an expert on them, but i get the jist of how it all happens

did you hav to run piggy back ecu or is it still on standard ecu aswell sorry for all questions but i hav a fue spare 8v motors kicking about and have been thinking about building a 8v turbo for a while now just aint been able to get much info on what to use .

Dirtydog1
09-03-09, 09:25 PM
yes, its all standard mate. im using a redtop fuel pump at present with an adjustable fpr set at 3.5 bar with 10psi boost and bobs your uncle! the standard gear can cope with it, its been done before, if you see the nova a few pages back, thats my friends old one. 14.2 1/4mile on gmax suspension! lol

as said /\ above, just have a go, you can modify the old cast gte/gsi manifold to accomodate a turbo, but you have to watch the oil return doesnt sit past the sup or the return oil will have to travel up hill. thats why i went for the high mount.oil trickles back down nice and freely to the sump!:thumb:

09-03-09, 09:28 PM
what about extra fueling on boost, surely it needs,

nice project btw, i too have a 1600 lump sat with a carlton gsi 24v throttle body on it, think ill turbo it now my bros sr.

Dirtydog1
09-03-09, 09:33 PM
i have cut the old fpr off the rail and welded it up, so it runs purely through the adjustable one, the fuel pump higher fuel pressure and with timing done correctly its fine!

again my mate who built his nova this way used it everyday and had very little trouble. its when you get silly with boost and advancing the timing you have to be careful! i think he said 145mph thought the dartford tunnel winding the bleed valve open = melted piston lol

nova 2L 16V

ive got heat sheilds, one for the turbo to stop the bonnet melting, the front pipe is now heat wrapped and i have a heat sheild ive made to bolt onto the rocket cover that covers the leads, i also made dumpy leads that give it about 30mm + clearance from the turbo. there is a good inch and a half between the bonnet and turbo too!

it could be a cracking combo, only reason i was going to use the 1.4 mpi manifold etc is because there isnt a 1.2 multipoint that im aware of.
you could be ok using the 14se lump and management? you need one with a dizzy though, so you can adjust the timing accordingly.

it wasnt mint mate! it was roosty as fook in the arches as you can see from the 1st page. the engine ran like poo. i emailed the bloke who had it for sale and offered him £150 cash for it as it was only 20 miles from my house.

Cool project. Nothing at all wrong with agricultural engineering/bodging.

Gotta take the pi*s for the 'aerosol overhaul' on the bottom end though.
Contrary to forum folklore, painting a gearbox casing or cylinder block doesnt constitute a rebuild.

haha, but all the pistons etc were removed and cleaned though bud. infact pistons are going back in tomorrow as ive fitted new rings.....so there! lol
and its not an aerosol job it was painted with stuff called rustrolleum or sumin. similar to hammerite i think.

valves were re-seated, head was thoughrilly cleaned and new seals fitted. best i can do on a budget and will all work just fine and dandy.:thumb:

Finished building the engine back up today, started 1st time which is always a good sign! went out for a little drive, goes realy well, no smoke no rattles nothing!

only thing is, when i removed the head i caught one of the sensors at the back of the manifold and it came apart! its a two pin black plug its sits just above the vaccum switch and next to the matrix water hose. i have no idea what it does! lol (cant do much because the engine runs sweet!)

now its re-built and running, there seems to be more waste gate chatter than before, could be linked to the mystery switch. anyone know wot switch im jibbering on about?????

Loving the paint mixing bottle!!!!! 10% marks in permanent marker FPMSL lol

lol, dont ask how i worked the 10% out either lol
no it drops down when the engines off. ive tried the gauge on 2 power boost valves and neither of the valves adjust the fuel pressure according to the gauge. it seem, to do its own thing.

the regulators seem to adjust the fuel pressure though, the engine changes its tune when you turn them in or out, but the gauge just wobbles around at 6bar! :tard:

the gauge takes about 10 mins to go back to zero though, which i should imagine is about right

Dirtydog1

ive tried it both ways round just incase, but still buggers about.
but it is the right way round now. the regulator adjusts the pressure, you can hear the engine change tune when raised or lowered.

ive ordered a new gauge now anyway, glycerene filled jobby! so fingers crossed i can get it tuned up this weekend!
got an MOT today, went straight though! :)

Just read this from start to finish, I actually prefer Corsa's over Nova's.:thumb:
10/10 for the effort gone into your project, it does'nt get cheaper than this.
High compression turbo FTW, we did this over 10 years ago to a Cosworth lump in a rally car, The throttle response is awsome. Have you had the shakey leg yet?lol
Although the colour's not to my taste, prefer bright yellow, the black goes well with it.
It's funny, I was talking to someone off here with a 1.2 about doing this only a couple of weeks ago, I'll make sure he see's this thread.
Need to see vids though, start and takeoff, please?

shakey body more likely! lol
high comp turbo is the way forward! no lag just goes!
the colour was based on a nova i wanted to buy years ago that was featured in total vaux. it belonged to a good friend of mine who did a similar thing to me and i got alot of tips from him.

im working on vids. bit rainy at the mo so just tonnes of wheel spin! il record the speedo moving from one side to the other!

lol, how come its taken two years? have you made the pistons from scratch? lol
its up to you i guess, the car will pull like a train with bugger all lag without it! you obviously know how to re-build the engine so if anything should go wrong its going to be cheap and easy to repair anyway!

dont let my 'dont care' attitude influence your decision though! :p

look at the size of the gap between 90 and 100, thats 10 degrees! the engine is at least 80-85 degrees, that will burn your hand! the car had been running a good half hour before that.

it never goes past 90 degrees! EVER............

right after a few hours of tweeking it down at my local rolling road, we set her up at a rich safe mixture producing 170.2bhp and 226ft lb of torque!

not bad at all for a budget build!

we could have pushed a fair amount more from it but would have been less safe lol, the car doesnt belong to me now so i dont want him coming back with cracked pistons!!!!

so im chuffed with that!
