Most men have what it is called “spatial ability”. That is why they can rotate a map in their mind and know in which direction to go. If they need to come back again in the same place at a later time, they can do so without needing a map. Most men can read a map while facing south and know they need to go north. They can also look at a map and navigate from memory afterwards. The examples are numerous, but you get the idea. Most women can’t do all those things. In fact when they head out of a store at a mall, most of them don’t know if they came in from the left or right side of the corridor. Similarly, they can almost never find their car in a parking lot.
So why can men find their way around? There are thousands of documented scientific studies that confirm male superiority in spatial skills. That is because they are (anthropological speaking) the food providers and they need to find their way home to ensure the survival of the family.
A test has been produced at Iowa State University by professor of psychology Dr Camilla Benbow. She scanned the brains of more than a million boys and girls to study their spatial ability and reported that differences between the sexes were already significant by the age of four. She found that while girls were excellent at seeing two dimensions in the brain, boys had the ability to see a third dimension, giving depth. On three-dimensional video tests, boys outstripped girls in spatial ability by a ratio of 4: 1 and the best girls were often outclassed by the lowest scoring boys.
Maybe that is why most women don’t enjoy spatial activities and don’t pursue careers that involve spatial activities. Examples? Well we first have sports such as golf, basketball, cricket, hunting, etc. Then there are careers such as architecture, engine mechanics, airplane pilots and a few others.
Note: Studies also showed that a man’s brain measures speed and distance to know when to change direction.

Too true lol

it all dates back to the hunter gatherer days, men needed "spatial abiltys" to hunt.

Hobbit
05-03-09, 02:36 PM
Hunting, traditionally done by men, required a "co-ordinating" ability to track animals accurately while on the move. A "categorical" spatial awareness was better suited to foraging for fruit, roots or berries, a job mainly carried out by women.
"Women tend to be more aware than men of objects around them, including those that seem irrelevant to the current task, whereas men outperform women in navigation tasks," the scientists wrote.
"Men tend to solve navigation tasks by using orientation-based strategies involving distance concepts and cardinal directions, whereas women tend to base their activities on remembering the location of landmarks and relative directions, such as "left from", or "to the right of"."

Do you know what? Just because some imbecile managed to combine some videos of women driving badly (some of which cant even be seen) does not, in my mind, provide conclusive evidence that women are bad drivers.
I bet there are the same amount or maybe more showing men doing the same stuff. But just because there is no age old sexist belief obviously created by a man who cant get sex saying men are bad drivers no-one has yet felt the need to create a video montage!
pfff

Oh look:

Men and women exhibit different driving behaviours that affect their attitudes, safety and insurance risk. Many factors underpin these differences, including neurochemical structures and hormonal processes shaped by evolution, and global socialisation practices. Each plays a part in explaining why men and women drivers have very different records in relation to accidents and insurance claims.

• Differences between male and female drivers in terms of crash rates are evident in a wide range of countries, including the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa, with males being significantly more at risk than females.

• Similar differences are evident regarding male and female pedestrians and accidents in the home and workplace.

• The differences are not easily explained in terms of levels of competence and driving skill of men and women. They derive from more fundamental differences in specific areas of behaviour and psychological functioning.

• There is extensive evidence to show that men, and young men in particular, tend to be more aggressive than women (in all known cultures) and they express aggression in a direct, rather than indirect, manner. This has a very significant impact on driving – encouraging more competitive and hostile behaviour with consequent higher probabilities of crashing.

• Levels of deviant (rule-breaking) behaviour are significantly higher in men than in women. This manifests itself in a greater frequency of violation of traffic regulations, including speed limits, traffic controls, drink-driving, etc.

• The differences between the sexes in terms of their risk-proneness while driving can be explained, at least in part, using an evolutionary psychology perspective. This proposes that much of neural circuitry of the human brain evolved to meet the requirements of societies and cultures very different from our own – that of the hunter gatherer – that existed for over 99% of our evolution as a species. Our 21st century skulls contain essentially ‘stone-age’ brains, and the brains of men are women are different in certain crucial respects.

I dispute that one. A brain doesn't evolve into a social or domestic skill set. A brain evolves as a learning, memory, motor neurone, etc tool. Hard to explain the point I'm making, but the brain evolves to have the ability to learn skills and thinkings, but doesn't need to evolve to actually develop those skills and thinkings or function in a particular social direction.

I can't think of a good analogy right now damnit lol

[edit] Instead of saying "21st century man has a stone age brain", it should be "stone age man had a 21st century brain - he just didn't know how to use it".

The thing is women crash more but only very minor accidents i.e little prangs, bumps scraps in car parks reversing into walls, other cars, hitting barriers, hitting curbs, scrapping along walls (side damage) damage whilst trying to park etc. These don't always include other cars. Like it was mentioned spatial awarness. Also the fact that for some women driving seems like a chore, certain manouvers also seem to be more difficult, this includes some men but more so women.

This is why I consider women to be less able skilled to drive (obviously not all females)

Also, there are more male drivers around so chances are that more men will have accidents.

The thing with men is that when they crash they do it properly, so to speak lol so it's something that is more noteable rather then little bumps and scraps casued by rubbish driving. Even though men crash harder I still feel that majority of men have better driving skills.

Thats actually the biggest contradiction I have ever read!

Women are worse drivers than men because they're rarely involved in major accidents whilst men are good drivers because they cause massive accidents????

WTF!

Yesterday morning, I popped up to the local garage to check the tyre pressures, when this happened. the lady, 'through no fault of her own', decided to drive down the hgv pump lane & make a U turn to the petrol pumps. unfortunately, some inconsiderate man had, 35 years ago, chauvanistically placed a line of 30cm high kerbs in the way. they shot out and hit the car directly underneath causing it to lift up so that its wheels were not touching the ground.. the poor woman driver had to be consoled by a passing therapist and some men towed it back off.
