Bubba

Lots. transmission tunnel will need to be made, prop shortened, drive shaft on the driverside would need to be shortened, diff setup of the back would be a pain

but it would be fun ;)

Why would it be "so much fun" ? GM 4wd isnt exactly Drift Kingtastic... its more, oh bugger the front wheels are spinning I'll push 90NM of torque MAX to the rear wheels.... ohhhhhhhhhhhhh sooooooo good.

I'd do it just to see BIGS stay true to his word lmao.
oh and £10K wont get it done by some one else either

Stu did you not know its fun to dremel a Nova to pieces, take the bodyshell of a cheap ratty Calibra 4wd with a broken xfer box, realise things really aren't going to work (and if they did, it would be rubbish) then fail to sell it on ebay for £3,000 as an "unfinished project" lol

Have a look at the white 4x4 Nova in the projects section (yes yes, i know this uses Ford stuff!), that will show you how much work is involved.

dreaming mate. ok. its a possbility for me, got a good tuning place down here. and yes its way beyond my abilities, thats why someone else would do it.

i dont understand why everyone gets criticised for having an idea???

just say ''its not guna cost you too much or its pointless'' simple.

If you've got a good "tuning place" down the road, why not go and ask them? Building a car of that ilk is not tuning, its fabrication. You want a metal workshop for the most part, not a garage.

Don't take this the wrong way, but we get "I'm going to build a 4x4 Nova! How much will it cost and what do I need to do?" posts about a couple of times a month - hence the sceptical replies - and the only one who's actually come up with the goods is the aforementioned Cosworth machine.

tbh matey the vaux 4wd is ****e coompared to others you could get, pulsar, evo, scooby etc.

but if gota ask the question, then imo you would start it then **** it off. and havent got the mech know how. + if spending that money and wanted something dif evo motor and running gear

+ jma do rea reng conversion at they qouted £10k +!

i understand. but when did i put in the thread '' i am going to build a nova 4x4.'' never pal.
its more curiosity and i understand it would be a hell of a hassle to do this not mentioning the £££££'s

a straight forward answer would have been nice.

keep laughing guys. i am going to do this.
say what you's want.
i have sourced a 4x4 astra van from which the guy made plans for. he has all measurements drawings and pictures from welding the calibra turbo floor plan to the back of the astra.

Good luck, just dont expect much belief form anyone till its completed as we see soooo many threads of a similar ilk and 99.9% of the time never see anything come from it (colins is about the only one thats got anywhere)

james_19
05-03-09, 08:06 AM
dont worry i understand. but i was not going to say i will do it until researching it thoroughly. but dont expect to see anything just yet. as i am waiting for a garage to go spare until i start, as i need that to store my shell and calibra floor plan.

So in the space of 27 minutes you managed to go from searching for said man with all plans and a van and talk him into selling it? I smell bull****.

So how is the 3.7 v8 nova getting on. nearly done is it lol

05-03-09, 01:35 PM
... An Astra van has so much in common with a Nova floorpan.

Though it would make a cool project & something worth bragging about at a cruise or show. I really think a 4x4 Nova would drive like an utter dog tbh, with such a short wheelbase. Other than hacking around farm fields for a laugh or used for rallycross I wouldnt mind betting that on the other side of 40mph, a FWD Nova will be quicker & nicer to drive.

Good luck & hat off to you if you still perservere with it however.

thanks craig. i didnt want to do it with a nova. want someone else to do it first haha. :D
i wanted something with a bit of length so it would drive much better.
thanks.
i know that no one has hope and faith in these projects as many people say then that get as far as cutting out the floor plan of the calibra then realise this is why people dont do this if ya get me

As said, the 4x4 thing is mentioned all of the time and the only lad to produce the goods didn't use GM crap as it is basically that.

By all means buld one/have someone do it for you once you know the costs involved etc etc, but as said there are for more reliable/stronger systems out there.

james_19
05-03-09, 02:25 PM
well acutally scott everett produced a astra van with calibra running gear.
this isnt going to be a project where its going to be done in a year. if i finish it by the time i leave university i willbe happy. am goin to try do most of the work myself

There is a running, road worthy, Blue mk3 Astra GSi with full Calibra 4x4 running gear & LET.
Back in the day, there was even a commercially available conversion for Novas to run a 4x4 system & 2.0 big block engine. Other than the small ad in the back of magazines & a testimonial from a certain magazine (issue & date) which backed up how astoundingly competent the car was, I can't say much more.

It isnt impossible, but anyone contemplating it needs a LOT of spare time, excellent fabrication skills & a reason to own/use such a creation. You really might aswell buy an Evo4 or Celica GT4 etc. Hell I think I'd even prefer to drive the Subaru engined/transmissioned mk5 Escort someone is building from Performance Ford mag!

james_19
05-03-09, 02:45 PM
thanks for the information.
my fabrications skills are ok. but hey its all about learning. the most am guna lose is the astra van shell. so its not a great deal.
i have quite a bit of time spare so its good.
i have from may - october free mate.

james_19
05-03-09, 02:46 PM
i understand people thinking why the f''''k are you going to even try and do this when you could buy an evo.
but there is something in me that wants to do it.
