I've got my carbs off my 1.6 to try and solve some erratic running, i'm sure its an air leak somewhere. Previously I had the inlet manifold faces skimmed for trueness and replaced the inlet gasket along with fitting new MISAB spacers, nyloc nuts with rubber washers etc.. yet it still seems to have an air leak  I think the problem lies with the conditon of the carb - inlet face on the carbs themselve as shown by these pics

Do you lot reckon this would cause an air leak? Is it advisable to get carbs skimmed for trueness?

a decent sealant on the gaskets would do it

They dont look too bad tbh.
Could try putting some wet/dry on a flat surface, and then rubbing the carbs by hand over it to clean the surface up. Thats what i usually do with inlets etc.

Air leak can be caused by worn spindles, so air leaks around where the spindles go through the carbs...

cheers, will give that a go, I'm gonna strip down the carbs and rebuild them while they are off so will check for worn spindles :thumb:

I doubt the spindles are worn as the run on proper bearings. If you have an air leek the best thing to do is sprary WD 40 around any joins when the engine is running. If there is a leek then when you spray on it the revs will change.

spindle could be bent due to incorrectly setup throttle pedal/linkage..

as said above the best way to check for air leaks is to spray brake cleaner all around the carbs in-let etc if the revs pick up concentrate on that area to pin point exactly where your air leak is.

Well i've held the carb i started to strip up to the light and can't see any coming through round the throttle plates and the action seems to be smooth on the spindles, but i guess the only way to know for sure is to remove the spindle and roll it on a flat surface, looks a bugger to do too :( lol

If I was you I'd leave the spindle in until you have exhausted everything else! its a pain of a job!
