I need some help. My sister-in-laws car has been in for mot at a local indipendant Volkswagon garage. It has occasionally used water and they are now saying it is a common fault which will cost £2500  to repair. The car is a 53reg A3 2.0 Tdi. Any help on info on this so called common fault??

At a complete guess, if the matrix is leaking and this is the cause of the water loss, the dash will more than likely need to come out. This could be a time consuming job hence the £2500 (labour!) bill?

Or head gasket, but i cant see that amounting to £2500 lol

Ive just done a search on the net. It appear the 2.0 tdi 140ps engines were prone to the combustion chamber in the head cracking.

Im thinking if she gets a head ill fit it myself at work. Making a little beer money of course

Hi mate, me! i work for vw, yep, you've found the right answer above. Piece of piss to do. Most of the £2500 is the cost of a NEW head.

How common is this John? Just bought a mint Golf for me mum which was traded in at work, its just over 3 years old on a 55 plate and only done 11,000 miles from new. Its a GT with the 140bhp TDI engine
Someone else said EGR's are a problem aswell.

I've done a couple at work rich, both luckily under warranty, Egrs can be problematic, but again i've only done a couple of those too. Luck of the draw i guess.

Just have to keep fingers crossed, she will likely be keeping it for the next 7-8 years so hopefully it will be OK.

It's generally the early 2.0 TDi's that have this problem isn't it?

As far as I was aware the problem got sorted pretty quickly, but I could be wrong!

As for the EGR valve that's easily solved by pulling it out!!!lol

I've done it on every VAG TDi I've had - although having said that they were all the 1.9's so it may be a different set up........
