Nova Mk1 1.2L / [B]Sport Look a like/B] Project

Finally got around to start stripping my new toy.
Bought a 1.2L off e bay without seeing last month.
Needs a lot of work doing but it will be worth it.
It's an 87 D reg in Polar White.
Done 57,000 miles with 6 owners.
Been after one for the passed year & seen many which are totally miffed.
Used to own a C reg White SR 20 years ago & have got the Nova bug back after turning 40.
Welding required in the boot/ floor corners & rear valence.
Just got my self a digi camera, so got some photos to put on here, if someone can explian how to do it?
When I go to insert image it asks me for an URL address?
http:// s679photobucket.com/albumThanks vaughanmc for the link, here goes!

In photobucket, hover over the thumbnail pic you want to display and copy the IMG code from the box that apperars below. Then paste the code in here and the pic should appear.

Your link doesn't work.

Doesn't look too bad mate - Pics resized to 800 x 600 would be a lot better

You putting a personal reg on it too ?

Garingo
27-02-09, 08:00 AM
Ok thanks I'll try that next time.
Yes hope to get a B/C reg plate on her eventually.
The main floor, sills, inner wings, doors, bonnet & inside plastics/dash are in very good nick.
Will have to sort out the grey to brown to get back to Sport colours.
Already got a good set of recaros & the Sport decals.
In no hurry, just a little project to get on with.
Only thing is shes got a factory fitted sunroof, did Sports not have a sunroof?

NOV4_SPORT
27-02-09, 03:08 PM
Sports were not fitted with sunroofs from the factory, unless specified by the buyer, iirc there where only two or three ffs sports mate, good luck with the project .

Re-loaded the photos again with some extras as well.
The sunroof works alright. Will have to sort out a better handle as existing is cracked.
Plan to get her as near as possible to an original Sport.
My mate had one while I had an SR & was always embvious of him.
I can't remember the reg no on her now, but he sold it somewher over the bridge. Only seen 1 in Wales since, just passing through probably.
Would love to own a proper one but funds will only allow me making a replica as near as I can at the moment.

I'm getting quite excited about it now.
Will be good when BST arrives, as ill have better light as my garage is a bit small.
Getting the rust cut out & re welding is the biggest challenge ive got but my bruvs got a mig so its sorting him out as he's very busy with work.
The paint work on the doors, tailgate & most other panels are very good & i think will come up good with t cut/wax & a lot of elbow greese.
Bit worried about matching the colour up when i fit 2 new front wings.
Want to try & keep as much of the original paint as poss as painting costs the earth to sort out.
Hope to do more cutting out tomorrow so ill have more pics next week.
Thanks for you all showing so much interst.
Will try & sort out better pics & proper tagging next time.

Youve been working hard there mate. Glad to hear she went sailing through MOT.
Couldn't get any joy with my grinder today to do some more cutting out so started removing grey vinyl from B pillars, using a heat gun.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00106.jpg
Took it very careful & used plastic safety plug to scrape away the vinyl.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00108.jpg
The adhesive layer remained & found petrol got it off quite easily, again using a plastic tool & sponge taking it easy not to scratch the underlying paintwork.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00111.jpg
There were a few small areas where the white gloss layer had come away, but i think this was caused before i even started removing the vinyl.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00107.jpg
The pillars looking good & quite clean after T cutting.
Started removing the side strip as well using same method.
Took me approx 90 minutes to get to this stage.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00112.jpg
Better go & repair the grinder now!

She's coming along slowly. Just finding spare time to spend doing her up between work & family life. I'm finding it quite relaxing working on the car, even if its only for an hour or so. I'm in no hurry. Want to try & get her MOT'd by April 2010. Probably run her with existing 1.2 for that summer & try & get hold of a good 1.3 lump for the summer after. Plan to keep her tucked away from the dreaded salt.
I'm a welsh speaking taff living in Carmarthenshire, West Wales.

Here are some more pics, progress been slow. Been busy in work & havent uploaded phtos for a while.
Finally got engine & box out so been cleaning engine bay & sorting surface rust/priming.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00210.jpg?t=1241276251

Cleaned master cylinder & brake components & applied a bit of paint.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00212.jpg?t=1241276355

Inner wings is coming up nice & clean & a bit of primer.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00211.jpg?t=1241276434

Two coats of hammerite soon freshen things up.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00215.jpg?t=1241276570

Other side
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00219.jpg?t=1241276623

Garage is getting a bit full so will have to try & store these at a mates shed.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00216.jpg?t=1241276773

Freshened up some suspension, steering parts with black hammerite after going over with wire brush on electric drill.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00214.jpg?t=1241277306

The old shocks were knackered so sourced some sport shocks of the bay & cleaned/painted original springs.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00213.jpg?t=1241277454

The steel wheels have come up well with some paint.
Deciding to try them in white for a bit, but may upgrade to revo rfx's if i come across a set at a tidy price.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00218.jpg?t=1241277764

Hope to sort out the other side during the next month. Want to get the wheels & tyres back on before turning the car around to concentrate on welding in the back end & cleaning/painting axle beams & all under the floor.
Will get more pics on before the end of May.

Wow that engine is really fantastic.
You given me a few tips there.
Glad to see someone else is doing a Sport replica.
I've done nothing to the engine yet just aquired a set of twin 40's but not the proper irsmcher manifold like yours, yet! Anyone got one to sell?
Have you got the genuine Sport 40's or just standard ones.
Sport parts are fetching good money on the bay, i've been lucky to get a set of tartan recaros but with the split rear seats though.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00222.jpg?t=1241288748

Can't wait to sit in these & drive her down the road.
Mine's not going to be a 100% replica but hope it will look like a Sport.
Don't want to insult the genuine Sport owners by trying to make an exact copy & try & fool someone its a cosha Sport.
Iv'e got a long way to go but am enjoying working on the car & trying to get the various Sport stuff.
Will certainly be keeping an eye on your project.

02-05-09, 09:33 PM
i belive its the genuine carbs as it come all assembled with the proper cable linkage, vac pipes etc. mines not going to be a complete sport rep either, its going to have the stickers but be stripped out with bucket seats cage etc. and i want a sr spoiler, snow plow etc. not to everyones taste but hey its my car and i'll do it my way!lol i'm pretty sure there was someone on here selling a inlet manifold a few days ago?

No sorry. Been busy building a patio.
Need to finish the front so i can start sorting the welding in the boot.
Got hols during last week in july so hope to get some more progress done.
You've had no luck finding your sport project?
Mate of mine has located e genuine Sport about 20 miles away on a farm. Hope to go and see it to get some inspiration for my repliica project.

vaughanmc
17-07-09, 06:28 PM
Nope but I'm looking for a base model to make a replica from but it won't be an exact copy of a Sport, it'll take some hints from the Sport...

Get some pics up of this Sport when you go to see it :)

Garingo
17-07-09, 06:38 PM
I sure will get some photos if the owner allows me.
Glad to hear your going down the replica route same as me.
That lad Steve's looks a mint.
It'll work out cheaper & you'll have a lot of fun gathering Sport stuff.
The problem i'm having is sorting out 2 front wings, there ar plenty of ones with the side indicators, have'nt located any plain ones, yet.
Keep an eye out on e bay & pistonheads white cars turn up from time to time. I took a risk bidding without seeing and i think i been quite lucky really.
Best of luck mate.

Been concentrating on cleaning underside, cleaning away rust and applying coat of smoothrite.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00342.jpg?t=1249417337

Removed petrol tank & complete rear beam, cut out worse rust areas.
Forever waiting for my welding friend.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00351.jpg?t=1249417578

Spring hangers now looking a lot cleaner.

http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00344.jpg?t=1249417703

http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00350.jpg?t=1249417990

Front shocks in place.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00347.jpg?t=1249418045

Been doing a bit of shopping as well. Thought i'd never get one of these.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00349.jpg?t=1249418127

Also gave up on looking for brown trim so sourced some vinyl spray paint.
Applied base primer and brown top coat on existing dash. It's adhered on strong. Its not proper Sport brown shade but at least its not grey. Probably do door cards and the rest of the trim as well if i can get some more.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/DSC00348.jpg?t=1249418357

Well thats it for now, will get more on soon when i sorted out the welding in the rear.

Sorry haven't been on for a while. Busy doing a garden patio.
Congratulations on your Sport purchase.
I went over all the underside of the car with a wire brush attached to a drill to get most of the loose material off, then painted on top of the existing undeseal with 2 coats of smoothrite using a 2 inch brush. It's hard work but looks tidy.
It comes up nice and should protect from the rust for a couple of years.
Got the vinyl paint from a bloke at work, but he had it from a firm off the net Woolies restoration.
Its not the dark brown shade but it will blend in tidy with the tartan recaros.
Did you get the 5 inch steels with the Sport?

Sorry to hear your selling. Hope you find a decent shell soon. Are you interested in selling the log book and plates? Got no use for the shell sorry.

Take the shell, plates and logbook then just get rid of the shell

I think I've got a shell - Just need to make space so the Sport has to go

After a long time looking everywhere, finally got one of these.
Thought i'd never find one, as they get sweeped up very quickly.
Just needs a bit of a clean.

just been looking at your thread, your car is coming along, very nice. Regarding your dash, if you get some vauxhall brazil brown paint you will be alot closer to the orignal sport dash brown.

Brazil brown? Is that a panel paint colour. If so won't it probably flake on the dash? Would be nice to get a closer colour. By the way, my sister had a brown nova 20 years ago. Not many around.

It is a panel colour but providing you give it a good key and use clear laquer after it should be fine. A friend of mine did this and looked pretty good.

My nova is a 83 mocca brown, nice to see someone else had one too. Your right tho, must be one of the rarer colours

Here's a few more recent photos.
Not much time being spent on the project as the demands of a young growing family are a priority.
Finally got her outside the garage.

Managed to find a wing with no side indicators. Need to sand down and prep for paint. Hope to get a passenger wing with Santa. Ha.

Got the boot decal on. It was a hell of a job, but looks more like a Sport already.
http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv158/garingo/P1010238.jpg?t=1285519239

Done a bit of welding in the boot corner and primed.
Need to get some polar topcoat.

Sprayed the door cards Brazil brown. Come up really clean and it's quite close to the proper brown.
Need to get some more paint and do the dash and the rest of the grey plastic interior.
That's it for now, hope to get more on soon.

It's coming on very slow.
Think it's going to be more of a look a like than replica.
I just spend a few hours a week on her.
It gets me out of the house when the hoovers on!
Would like to be on the road by next April.

Looks very nice, front seats look very clean, as I found out window surrounds don't suit a Sport/rep IMO tho

need the twin 40 carbs but probably go for putting on a 32/34 weber with sr manifold as it needs to be practical/ecenomical to run doing the summer.
Might sell on the Irmscher manifold and airbox to help source a decent 1400 8v engine.
Depends if I can get decent money for them?

Yes the seats are pretty clean.
The window surrounds I plan spraying polar white, will look better I think.
I want the sport look more than going for a replica now as I haven' the time to source thr proper parts.

It will be good enough for my liking.
Don't believe in the Concours look as a car has got 4 wheels and is meant to be driven.
Although i have to congratulate all those who patiently prepare their cars for concours. Each to his own i say.
Will only be used during the summer months as the salt/grit makes a mess of things.

I think I'll do the same on the other side.
Is a proper sport shell different in the rear window area or if I remove the rear window and take off the surround will it work?
Can someone shed some light please.

What do you mean fella ? Sport shells are EXACT same as any other early Nova shell...

bmw156
27-09-10, 07:51 PM
i think the sports didnt come with the surrounds, as most novas didnt, the shell will be white under them.

its easy enough to remove and refit with out breaking, and there is a guide somewhere on here.

remove them and you will be happier :)

Removed the rear window surround.
It was quite easy really, just a bit of patience removing the sticky stuff and carefully replacing the rubber seals.
A stubby screwdriver comes in handy.
Thanks BMW 156 for the advice.
