Hiya lads...

Im 17 and have got a nova 1.4L but i am getting shitty insurance quotes of 3000+. My only solution is to get a smaller engine, like a 1.2. I know i could sell my 1.4 but as i have put so much money into the body work and retrimming the interior i would prefare to dump a 1.2 engine into it.

How would i do it? Would it be a straight swap?
Oh and are the 1.2i faster than the 1.2 carbs? In fact do the 1.2's come in carb form?

Any help would be great. Cheers lads.

1. I drive a 1.4 SR ?900 insurance, but I'm named driver

2. 1.2i would be faster but 1.2 carbed would be easier, There are 1000's of 1.2 carbs around (mainly in scrappys)

3. Ask Anton what he's doing with his 1.2

4. Chris

He is right! The injected engine is a over a second and a half off 0-60 than the carby engine

is that not due to the cat tho????

if u put a carbed engine in with a cat would it not be similar performance?

Well my mate has an escort xr3 and an xr3i. Both standard. The xr3 beats the xr3i off the lights. Id imagine its cause the injector unit is heavier.

Would it be an easy swap then or what?

cheers lads

p.s novanutter- email me on vinylwizzard@hotmail.com with the info on the engine you have. where you from?

hrm - have u queried the insurance company on this

as far as i know the car will be treated as a 1.4 with engine mods or simply a 1.4 by most insurers

i really cant see them reducing the premiums for you reducing the engine size

what insurers have u tried??

my first car was a 1400 saloon and i paid 1100 under my da

after my first year of driving i had no NCB and 1 accident which was my fault and i insured it under my name and it cost 1050

the first insurance policy was a complete rip off

if u havent already give liverpool victoria a call

remember that if your under 18 you'll need to pay the lot upfront as the wont give u credit on it, hence my reason for insuring under my dads name for the first year

have you tried 1stquote.co.uk? follow the link to car quotes on that page and they have an online quote service. its a bit like AA car insurance in that they search around a number of different insurers to find the best quote. they only give online quotes for standard cars, but if you ring them they will help with your 1.2/1.4 query.

anyway, if its a 1.4L, you stick a 1.2 engine in it and change it to a 1.2L as far as the dvla ar concerned there should be no problem. my mate dropped a 1600 diesel ford engine in an XR2 and the dvla just considered it to be a 1.6d and thats what its insured as. back then it cost nothing but a trip to the post office for the form to change it. should still be free now.

are you gonna do the honest thing and declare all your mods? it doesnt make that much difference, unless you go for twin webers or such like, and could save you hassle if you do have a nasty bump.

right lads... ive got a new quote for my 1.4 of ?1778.95. which i think aint to bad. so to anyone who wants it the company is zenith insurance. so i think i will just insure my 1.4 now... not unless anyone wants to buy it???

oh who has removed their back seats? has their been any problems with getting your bird in the back or anything ;-)

and what about sub boxes? i wanna remove my rear seats but dont fancy the idea of everyone being able to see my install. Tints could be an option. any input on this would be cool.

cheers lads.

did u try liverpool victoria??

unless u live in a high crime area or summat that quote shouldnt be that high

give liv vic and CIS a call

their numbers are in the yellow pages

and another thing - phone direct - dont do it thru a broker - you'll end up paying more

you will pay more through a broker, but, if u use the website i said, and do the online quote, the name of the insurance company is listed in the quote. get their number out of yellow pages and give them a ring. it saves ringin loads of companies

I've been using the same broker for years, and last time I renewed my policy I tried all of the internet searches. the best quote was from Norwich Union Direct. I rang my broker and he was 30% cheaper, by the way, the policy was with Norwich Union..

It is a pain, but you should try every possible insurer, ?20 spent on phones is nothing compared to what you could save..

PS. the 1.2 swap is easy but the 1.4 model probably has bigger wheels,or alloys, & a body kit. This sort of stuff costs much more to insure than 200 cc's
