Hi has anyone on here got/had/drove one?its the series 2 shape im looking at.

i have a soft spot for these but i keep getting put off by the french crap tag they have!lol .And was just wondering if anybody had any past experiance of them/living with them?I was looking at either getting one of these or a seat ibiza cupra but i think the cupra may get abit too boring for me!it would be something like this:

Ive raced/rallied sheetloads! Fantastic little cars!

Personally Id rather buy/own one of these over a Ibiza anyday! As much chuckability as a Nova, but far more rewarding to drive then the Ibiza in both standard & modified state!!

The Rallye is simply a bear essntails 106 GTi tbh. No frills package but has scope for 180bhp for relative little money really. Grp N ECU and a decent manifold/system is a must as a start point IMHO.

i've heard tell the series 1 with the 1300 is the better of the two, but having never driven them (i'm 6'2 and 18 st, so i dont fit well!) i couldnt really say.

i'd definitely have one over a cupra though.

Stage 1 rallye's have the same kinda enigma as a Nova Sport chap. Ultimatly they are the better car, but its really hard to find a decent genuine example nowadays.

Thanks for the response guys and i was hoping you'd see this thread mike!lol. are the 8 valves easily tunable to say 150bhp and still be reliable?

i had a s2 rallye and it was quickest of the mark against most other cars and floor it in any gear for a smile.

Only thing against them is that they are getting a bit long in the tooth but that at least means they are cheaper to buy. They have good corrosion resistance but I found that in general Pug spares and repairs costs for cars of this age can be quite pricey plus they can be relatively complicated to fix - try sorting the tracking!

My bro had a series 1 and I 16v converted it and fitted Bilsteins etc etc. Took it on a trackday at Donington and it was ace! Shame he stuffed it a few weeks later  Really great cars, love the look of the series 2 rallye, however are you not better off getting a GTI? More power, more potential and if you want a stripped out car, then sell the interior and make a few quid  Plus they don't have the premium that Rallyes have.

my girlfriend has got a blue s2 rallye i loved driving it more than my nova tbh been of the road a while as it is still getting the finishing touches lol

make sure you check back axle bushes
and the front shafts

both expensive to repair lol

most the parts for these cars are still available from pug but get your wallet out

handle great, quick of the mark,

if you buy the one in question get some original steelies for it lol

I'd only go near the phase1 (1300/1400cc) Rallye personally. The phase 2 is nothing on the earlier car, its a glorified Saxo VTR, which lets face it isnt quick. A std Nova GTE will see off a phase 2 Rallye.

On paper, the GTE is actually pretty damned close to the 1300 Rallye. Its only real advantage is additional torque purely from having a bigger engine, which pushes it to 60 a bit quicker.

GTE
100bhp, 99ftlbs
820Kgs
0-60 9.1s
Qtr 17.0
Top 117

106
100bhp, 80ftlbs
810Kgs
0-60 10.6
Qtr 17.8
Top 116

Considering the Rallye is supposed to be a relatively lightweight version of the 106 with no mod cons, and the GTE has all the usual refinements of central locking, e/w etc, the pug is only 10Kgs lighter...!

10kg? Thats odd TBH, Phase1 Rallyes are alloy blocked aswell where as a GTi is cast.

Apparently so... thats from the same source, so you'd expect the error margin to be the same on both.

Mike

Still remain good cars though. A hoot to drive down back lanes TBH. Decent manifold/exhaust (Pug Sport stuff IMO) Grp N ECU, Pug Sport bottom arms, Bilstein's and your away!

EDIT: I'd even drop the torsion bar 2 maybe 3 clicks aswell.

Jack

Oh yeah, not contesting that. To be honest, standard for standard on a track or even on normal roads, my money would be on the 106 as faster from point to point due to superior handling.

Totally agree my black friend. It may be French, but, and as you say, point to point there is no competition really.

EDIT: You have to drop the torsion bar on the back Jack else you get major lift oversteer once the fronts been lowered! Tends to steer you into a hedge or tree.

106 is a great little motor, had a gti and it was great, bought just on the off chance I was heading to look at a GSI Carlton and went to get petrol and passed a Pug gargae on the way seen it took and look and and the sales guy made me take it a run, drove it about 2 miles and said I'll take it, very sharpe motor, also had a 1.4 XT which was good too. Wouldn't mind a S1 rallye too

bit of a downsize in motor to the one you was originally going to look at lol

It was about 4 years ago and only wanted the carlton to diff the life out of, the 106 was probably the best car I ever had but probably my favourite car was the AX GT's, very similar though. Spoke to the guy I sold it too yesterday and he still has it. The 106 is a great little motor dare it say it better that a Nova but the the nova was an older design and more reliable and cooler
