Here goes. I’m Edd, I haven’t posted much on here but hopefully now my Nova project has begun, you’ll here more from me.
This car is meant to be the best Nova I can build in my opinion drawing from all the experience of the 6 Nova’s I’ve had & built over the years my first car was an F reg 1.3 SR in Red. My last Nova was a GTE that I rebuilt from a shell into a GSi replica with 2.0 XE, big Bilstein suspension & a strengthened body shell etc. I lost my enthusiasm for Novas a bit when Novadose & Abyss bodykits became the norm & the whole appeal of Novas went downhill along with their reputation.
However like many users on here, I couldn’t stay away for long & the temptation to have another has arrived. Me & Craig Green go way back & after he pointed me at the pngclub.com forums I have bought a donor car & sourced the required rare, genuine panels from Steve (Duick) to make a proper job of restoring a Nova that will hopefully last for a good few years.

I’ve got hold of genuine replacement rear quarter panels;
Pair of brand new GM doors;
Replacement rear panel;
Grp-A chassis plating kit;
Replacement upper fr panel & crossmember;
Early mk1 grey rear bumper;
Early SR wrap around rear spoiler;
Early 1 piece fr bumper & lower snowplough spoiler;
Mk1 SR 1.4 tailgate vinyl.

Big thanks to Steve (Duick) for supplying many of the new parts & panels, I don’t think my ideas for this project would be possible without his help.

I have decided obviously to tackle the bodyshell 1st. The car is a J reg 1.2 Luxe+ I sourced locally on ebay, which is in fair condition, structurally pretty much rot free, but a little unloved (hence the bargain price) 200 pounds.

The work on the car started for real this weekend. The car was stripped down to a state where we could begin the welding work under the bonnet.
Grant (GRUNT16V) came over to do the welding for me. He came well recommended.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09019-1.jpg

We set about removing the fr panel & crossmember, the crossmember held on for dear life & was stubborn as a mule. It took the best part of an hour drilling off the spot welds & chiselling out the bits that wouldnt let go!

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09020.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09029.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09030.jpg

All off!
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09031.jpg

The strengthening plates for the tie bar mounts was welded to the crossmember in situ before it was welded back on the shell.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09034.jpg

Edd

With the crossmember in, we set about adding the 2 large plates to the fr mounts/chassis leg areas & stitching the inner wings to chassis legs.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/090219_142603.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/090219_142549.jpg

Then the lower plates for the TCA mounts etc were added in which are trickier due to being under the car, hence upside down welding.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09045-1.jpg

There is an area of rust that needs attention in the battery tray (surprise surprise). I am converting to a Corsa style servo & removing the std Nova one so this area needs to be strong & cosmetically rust free ideally.

Here it is with an existing plate repair;
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09005.jpg

As you can see, the rot continues further beneath the battery tray & actually runs into the bulkhead behind the dash & outwards to the top of the splash guard behind the drivers wing.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09003.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09043.jpg

We decided to cut out the whole area & make the best job we could of the repair with fresh metal.

This is where we are at since the first couple days of progress. This weekend should finish the front end & leave me free to dress back the welds & get some etch primer on the bare metal etc, then we will move on to putting on the rear quarters & rear panel.

The back end of the car is pretty good, with the wheel arches not being rusty, chassis legs perfectly sound but there is a hole in the rear panel below the bumper line, so this will be replaced too.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/CombeEUROFEST054.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/090214_105857.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/Edds%20project%20Nova/NOVA-build-feb09040.jpg

More updates throughout the weekend & I'll add a vague tech spec for the car & engine when I get time.

Bit of a update, spent yesterday cleaning up the front end, ( grinding back welds and scabby spots ). today im striping off all the factory seam sealer on the floor pan so it can be painted in etch primer, il upload pics later in the day to show the progress on the shell. hopefully get the rear quarters and rear panel welded on in next few weeks, got to speak to grant bout this tho.

got a few bit sorted for the engine,

courtenay turbo manifold ( last one they had!! ), spacer plate and vacumn switch.http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/IMG_0022.jpg

also got a garrett t25 turbo unit from a rover off ebay for 30 quid, lucky its in very good nic, no play in shaft etc. might change this at a later date when its on the road. a mate of mine used to be in to rovers and he let me have a forge dump valve he had lying about, fit on the side of the turbo unit.http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/IMG_0024.jpg
http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/IMG_0025.jpg

im off to see steve/duick in germany in a few weeks to get more of the parts/panels in need to complete the car. hopefully get it spayed at the end of april.

thanks for all the comments guys,

Nice work always wanted to build a 1.6 8v turbo but iv started a 2.0 16v on bodies. But got a 1.6 8vengine in mind and already have management, i know ill need a turbo and manifold and intercooler and pipes. Im thinking of skiming the pistons as my mate can do it cheap for me, whats the switch for and what els would i need?what are you going to do for management or is there a way round it?

Edd

bit of a update;

picked up this SR last week, think some of you will know it. used to belong to CK iirc. i decided to buy it so i can use a lot of the parts and a few to sell:thumb:, its now got 56k on it, body work is not that great tbh but the interior is still in good condition seeing as its 25 years old now :eek:. due to rust i will probably end up scraping the shell but will transfer the A reg plate on to my shell.
Parts i will take off to use are;

bump stips, early tailgate (which has no rust surprisingly) , maybe the wheels and all of the interior including the dash. Brown tinted glass which all has the reg etched into it.
few pics;

also done a bit more on the shell;

underside all primed up;

The shell has had some pretty terminal rot sealed over in the scuttle panel, I reckon removing the dash might reveal all manner of nastiness. Overall though it is pretty good for its age. My 1st car a B reg 1200 was dideously rusted in the arches & boot fllor, yet that was 10-12 years ago I had that.

Most of the parts will live on though & it is all going to a good cause!

The early SR seats had a lift toggle & different locating points compared with the push down release type rear seats which have a pin to locate in.

I think thats it. :thumb:

Also been thinking a lot about my engine,

Keep thinking i should be fitting one of these Rotrex superchargers,:d

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/untitled.jpg

rather than fitting the turbo stuff.

Chap i spoke to at GMC said that out of the 8v Saxo/106 they have a reliable 190bhp with this charger on. Even more with low compression!! :)

Thinking i might fit the charger and my spacer plate, 200bhp plus from 1600 smallblock would suit me. lol

How are you going to repair the rot you found under the drivers side rear quarter?

I have been looking into the rotrex for my project (best i don't mention what it is on herelol)

Have you got any prices yet?

Look forward to seeing it soon.

I'm going to buy a arch replacement panel and fit it as the inner arch saves putting loads of plates in there and will make a better job of it.

As for the Rotrex, been looking at different places, bout £1500 is the cheapest iv seen so far, but will probably try and get a kit cheaper from the states.

Nice to see you have joined on here, see you soon mate.

More progress this weekend, decided to keep the noise down this time tho, no grinder till 10am, think it was a little early last time. lol

cut all this rust out;

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/IMG_0271.jpg

got a rear arch panel from beavers, cut it down and used it for the inner arch;

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/IMG_0291.jpg

then seamed in;

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/IMG_0292.jpg

etch primed;

finished off this afternoon by cleaning off the welds or one of the rear turret area, etch priming and sealer.

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/IMG_0310.jpg

I'll answer. The earlier rear seats had a different retaining clip on them. Even the brackets welded to the inner arches were different. Seeing as Edd is being a poser with a cage & non-occupiable rear seats, he will need those early seat brackets after all. :thumb:

U-POL Gravi guard is the stuff, if i had a-frame, compressor and gun i would have got Gravi-tec. Apart from that cant really see what would be a better job tbh.

it acts as good sound deadning too, really notice the tinny sound from spare wheel has gone. Very happy with the result.

GGgrrrr get then uploaded! Wanna see how you've been getting on. All smoothed?

Edd
12-12-09, 10:03 PM
The rest of the welding has been done in the bay, underside has been fully seam sealed and had 8 cans of GraviGuard.

Not really looking forward to smoothing the bay tbh.

Not used fibreglass filler before so I think il have to take my time, but il get it done.

Ah nice, if your can get some Smc black fiber glass, its flexi fiber glass. Take yor time, as the nicer you put it in the easy it is to rub down and get the shape right.

Edd

Cheers for the advice Benn, il have a look for that fibreglass filler in the week.

As for the Rotrex, been looking at different places, bout £1500 is the cheapest iv seen so far, but will probably try and get a kit cheaper from the states.
Cheaper from the States? That'd be weird, seeing as Rotrex is manufactured in Denmark. There's quite a few places in the UK that sell Rotrex superchargers (TTS and Holeshot spring to mind, both motorcycle shops) so you might just as well get them locally. Just my 2%.

Edd
14-12-09, 06:31 AM
^^^ ah cheers for that. I did think it was only Gmc that sold Rotrex.

I will look into it.

Finally a update;

with going abroad on holiday, christmas/new year, bad weather etc i havnt done as much as i would have liked tbh, but seeing a few more mk 1 projects taking shape, (Scott, Andy's, Vaughan to name a few) i have my motivation back.

After hours lying underneath the shell i have finally finished the underside and rear inner arches.
few pics;

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/SAM_0398.jpg

i used Hammerite smooth, also seen a few people on here talking about using Hammerite for this purpose, i would recommend mixing some thinners in with it to make it more spreadable.

as im going for a smooth bay and talking to the chap who is going to paint the car, i decided to remove the pattern part slam panel and fit a genuine one that i got sent from Germany. There would of not been any way to achieve a smooth look across the slam panel with the pattern part fitted, plus it felt like it was made of tin foil lol.

few pics;

pattern part off

genuine lined up, il get it welded on tomorrow.

also got some of this on Benn's reomendation;

http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr359/EDDRODGERS/SAM_0402.jpg

Still got a few more plates to weld in the bay then hopefully start smoothing the bay off on the weekend.

So you pulled all the underseal off?

And hammerited it?

Edd
27-01-10, 03:29 PM
After thinking long and hard about it, i have way too many brand new parts, (vinyl, spoiler, plough, etc) to go on the car to put a 1.6 16v engine in.

It just would not be in keeping with the car, so i have decided to put the 13sb engine back in.

At the weekend i picked up a 13sb, all fully rebuilt, new pistons, rods etc. Piper cam, venier, paddle clutch plus more.
Also came with a cylinder head thats got 1mm enlarged inlet and exhaust valves. All unused.

So the plan now is to build a high spec 13sb engine, with my Irmscher injection kit and with the Rotrex supercharger on it.

Hoping for 130bhp.

Yep took all the underseal off, used 15, yes 15 cans of U-pol Gravi Guard then 3 coats of Hammerite.

Cant see it coming off in a hurry.

Wow... That looks like some labor of love under there mate! lol

Theres only one thing that bugs me about doing the underside of the car (hence why you probably use so many cans) the original stuff is so so thick, but all the aerosol can applications Ive seen come out out very thin etc, so is the stone guard thin, or similar to the original rubbery stuff?

Really need to figure out what to do on mine when it comes to this.

Top work though mate, keep the updates coming.

Scott

Cheers mate,

Although it does come out thin it is VERY tough. I would also have liked something a little more thick and rubbery.

U-pol Gravi Tec is more thick and rubbery but you need a compressor and a A frame, i dont have either.

But i very confident that what i have done is going to be long lasting and not chip.
