14-02-09, 10:12 PM
depends on the job you do and the shifts/rota you do, some people are saliary based others day rate, its not really easy to get a job offshore if thats what your thinking about, a few company's have recantly paid off and re-deployed staff in the north sea with this "credit crunch"

I work as a valeter at garage selling 2nd hand vans. We have been non stop since before christmas. I have had to work the last 4 saturdays and working 3 or 4 nights a week.
Not sure why we are so busy, most car sales garages around here are dead.

MOD, pretty safe tbh. Only threat is outsourcing in a year or so's time, but I could just transfer elsewhere in the MOD if I wanted to stay in. Would probably end up doing "business management" or somesuch toss though, which, annoyingly, there are loads of in the MOD. FOI request, abbey wood C grade staff, gardening leave :thumb:

The MOD are chucking out all their IT (ok, its other technical professions too, but mostly IT) staff to external industry, who will charge them for the work we currently do. I could sit here and tell you exactly how badly the MOD fritter away your tax monies, the incompetence of various management staff, the sheer idiocy of various processes etc. But I'm not allowed to. Ho hum. FOI request, EHUDS costing and usage :thumb:

I work in a groundwork contracting firm. my brother is my boss. we have got some work, but thankfully, we never stuck to the whole housebuilding thing, we do industrial/agricultural etc. we also do maintenance work for local large organisations (councils/home office etc) & they always have some funds to get rid of in march, so things are ok at the moment...
we also have our own workshop facilities & are starting up doing horsebox maintenance (the local big firm went bust having run off with loads of money), as we have run lorries in our family for the last 40+ years, we are doing servicing, maintenance checks, pre-mot work etc. so if the building stops, there is always the workshop..

Ive been layed off from 4 jobs in 12 months. Its very worrying, the last 2 jobs were almost £100 down from my normal weekly income aswell.I now have to wait 10 days to see what benefits we are entitled to.Dont they realise rent/bills food shopping still has to be paid for?

One thing ive noticed aswell just lately,is that nearly any job that is available is temporary to permanent. They are scared to give people contracts.
I realise the government cant just magic jobs to give to people but more needs to be done about this.Dont let the unemployment figures put you off or get you down,Dont forget that 1m or so of those have been unemployed for years and have no intention of ever working. These are the career criminals and benefit cheats,so unemployment rates arent as bad as the figures suggest.

No job for me, jacked in the motor trade to work in the oil industry as a mechanic and then got made redundant. Living off the other halfs wages and homers just now but to be honest i seem to be making more money doing homers than i did working full time!

Once we are married in August im either going to set up on my own or bugger off abroad and set up on my own there!

I work all day Sunday's at Debenhams on Woman's accessories. I get £5.73 an hour (minimum wage i think). I have worked there 3 years and NEVER had a pay rise, its boring, monotonous and the customers are all stuck up their own arses and talk to me like I have an IQ of an ameba. BUT I have a job and am grateful for that.

I am also a student in my last semester and will leave right when their are no proper jobs in the country

CV Writing Guide added to sig lol

and LMFAO @ the BMW temp workers on the news, crying that they'd all been laid off at the drop of a hat. Didn't see one english-primary-language speaker there. Boo hoo, so the temps got kicked first. Tough, you're temps for a reason and its in your contract that you can get outed with minimal notice and no payoff.

Andy
16-02-09, 06:35 PM
Temps have no contract,at my last job i was temp-perm i got told not to come back on monday 5 mins before i clocked off on the friday. Its not right that, everyone should be treated equal

Jack
16-02-09, 06:37 PM
True, but thats how companies treat temps. I know Westlands in Yeovil used to keep more than half their staff as agency temps, and keep extending their contracts. Purely as they could boot them out with no payoffs or notice as and when they felt like it (which was quite regularly).

Yeah thats what these did where i was at.
There were people who had been there a year and still not offered a contract.
And you dont get paid bank holidays either. Its a pretty sh1t position to be fair.Nearly all the jobs that have been advertised lately all say temporary, probably due to them not knowing whats next.

live by the contractor/temp sword, die by the sword.

you get a higher rate of pay than a permy, but then you are an easily disposed of body. It suits both sides of the scale when its in the others favour.

Im a Duty Manager (Blakey/Inspector), I feel bad for eveyone losing their job weve had such a massive influx of staff as the bus industry doesnt normaly get hit by the resecion as people leave their cars at home and use public transport.

I'm a groundworker mate, anything from flaggin' n kerbin' to deep drainage and everything in between. Loved the variety of the job, earned good money and enjoyed doing it. Construction industry is pretty heavy damaged up this end.
We were all told on the run up to xmas that things were tight until a few jobs opened up, but everyone was safe where they were, company was going to 'ride out the storm', until other contracts kicked off. Last day we worked, Dec 23rd, waiting on our final paycheck with the holiday pay etc, the p45s came flying. Our week holiday for xmas was considered our week notice, brilliant eh?

not on dole matey on benefits like!! more money than dole and they are going to pay for my college course!!

but im not allowed to use any vibrating tools any more so i cant complete jobs as fast without using airguns ect

not only a mechanic but i was also the tyre technition at the last place i worked aswell so that meant i couldent do punctures or any such jobs

which means i could not cpomplete jobs i was employed to do without making my condition worse and im not really game for that lol
