rev counter dodgy on nova xe

just been putting a xe motor in mates nova, everything ok apart from rev counter, wired up to green wire on xe loom to green wire on clocks but the rev counter is jumping around all over the place and sometimes doesnt read at all, what could be causing this?

where does it get its rpm signal from on engine? is it the coil?

the wire for the rev counter is on a plug under where the xe ecu is on a cav etc.

yes i know that and ive wired it to the clocks but thats not the problem

Possible bad earth for the clocks or the green signal wire is interrupted in the loom (likely XE eng loom) somewhere.
