As some my remember my car went into meltdown mode on the way to PV last year, I've just got round to fitting the new bottom end and started cleaning the head down ready to fit. I thought it was fine from the 'meltdown' but on closer inspection I found this (cylinder 3 btw)

Is this worth worrying about? I assume the underside of the valve is the same?

Pics aren't as clear as I hoped, the little white specs (I assume fragments of piston) are quite firmly attached to the valve, little bit of emmery paper or new valve? It's a Blydenstien B+ pack head, anyone got an idea what valves they used?

I am guessing std cos the B was a fairly cheap job.

linish up the valve, and lightly emery off the chamber (LIGHTLY)... should be fine imho

I doubt there standard, ones 1mm oversized and the other 2mm iirc. When my machinist had it apart a while ago, he said they were fairly posh - AKG or something with 3 letters, waisted stem

Cheers stu, just got to figure out a (pikey) way of compressing the valve springs

my old boss used to take valve collets off by holding a small ish open ended spanner on the top of the cap & hitting it with a hammer.... the collets usually boinged off. I caught him being nosey round a 1300 head I'd just had skimmed & reconned & went a bit mad after finding it in bits.. his excuse was that he wanted to make sure they'd put new stem seals in.

before i got a spring compressor we used to just put a socket on the top of them then hit it with a hammer..

Thanks for the input lads. As said in my WIP the head is now out with my engineer, he's just rang to say there's a crack between the two valve seats and they need to be replaced. Does anyone have a number for blydenstien office? Are they still running?

Mr (god) blydenstien is no longer with us :(

Ivor Searle were contracted to do the "basics" for Bill when he was approaching retriement. Might be worth asking them... but its Dans old head isnt it? if so, we were never sure WTF valves it had in it lol

They were fitted with wasted stems as mine was:thumb:

Pikey way is get a socket thats the same size as the spring top and give it a good whack with the hammer, and then the collets pop off, can have them all off in secondslol

If its cracked between the 2 valve seats does this not mean the head is scap iirc

Yes and no. Just got some more info as the first conversion was cut short. Mines not cracked all the way yet it's just on it's way. My engineer said it would be OK to run on for a bit () but the valve seat may drop out. I (my dad) know a serious percision welder who specialists in bike engines and if not he can't do it then Turnspeed engineering could help me out. Just need a new seat to be heated then. Fingers crossed :) Might need to speak to Ivor Searle still for parts/specs tho.

110 ish and then let go, snapped the conrod into 3 halves, caught fire etc etc

killed all 8 tappets and ripped the valves off:cry:  i ended up having a hole in the back of the block and one in the front, it even moved the ring gear on the flywheel!!!

Yep 40's all the waylol

****! Actually felt ill reading that lol poor smallblock. Well if it's going to happen, do it right!

Stu - not Dan's head. He sold the engine compleate IIRC. Purchased this one off the bay about 2/3 years ago.
