View Full Version : Temperature gauge

The temperature gauge on my GTE just won't work. I've replaced the temperature sensor in the cylinder head, and the clocks to ones that I know are working and still it doesn't work. There are no fuses blown or anything and just want to ask is there anything else I should be looking for? Is there any way to check the wiring? :thumb:

someone said yesterday about this, apparently if u earth the lil spade connector that goes to the sensor, providing all is well on the clock side, it should read maximum.

There's a plug that goes onto the top of my sensor, plastic plug type not a spade type terminal connector. The previous owner of this nova has messed about with so much, it could be anything!!

chop the plug and crimp a spade on it, then u know its making a good contact.
dap of grease on it too, just for good measure.
No need for grease.
As Jimbob said, just put the wire to the engine and the gauge should max out.
If it dont work then visualy check the wire along as far as you can.

No problem, but inside the plug there are two connections. Which one do I connect to the head?
NOOOOOOOOOO dont touch that plug, its the water temp sensor for the ECU.
There should be a blue wire going to a small copper nipple in front of this plug. Thats the one that does the temp guage. If there is no wire around you can see just hanging close by, just run a new wire from the nipple to the blue wire that comes out of the dials :)

Ah I see I see, thanks for that. When it said in the manual temperature sensor I assumed it was the one sending the the current to the gauge. I wondered why the engin would cut out when i unplugged it!! I take it the other one is locted in the same vicinity under the distributer somewhere? I'll check it out tomorow evening after work. Thanks for all the help, greatly appreciated.

all the temp senders look similar on most vaux engine with 1 blue wire hence never get mixed up with other senders / sensors.

lol n0o0o0o0o0o0o0o - lee to the rescue. i shouldnt really tell people to chop random wires should i lol, assumption is the mother of all fcuk ups they say. lol
bsa man - under the distributor ? lol anyway....
the sensor i was thinking of is on the left hand side of the inlet manifold (as your under the bonnet), youll be able to see it (bit smaller than a 5p) pointing upwards, just under the dustbin lid airbox, not a million miles from the alternator. there should be a thin blue wire going to it with a spade connector connecting it, you might have corroded contacts, or the wire needs jiggling, or the wires fallen off, or the sensors dead. u can use the earth test on this wire to max out the gauge to check that side of it.
edit : ah crap lee said ecu, there wont be a dustbin lid airbox on yours in that case, i dont even know if the sensors in the same place.

Ha ha ha. Got it sorthed, many thanks, the wire was broke. The temp sender was at the back of the inlet manifold. so..... on to the next problem then.
