Napier deltic engines FTW!

My dad builds those, has all the old manuals etc. Puts Haynes well to shame

[edit] Sloth, they're turbocharged, not supercharged

Seriously, if you're interested in working on large scale derv engines, go down your local preserved railway. They're ALWAYS looking for volunteers, anyone with an inch of mechanical knowledge is more than appreciated.

Maybe I'm talking out of my ar$e here but was it on this forum where someone was going to run a turbo from a diesel loco??

Nah ^ Someone specifically mentioned the diesel loco turbos the other day, they're 150 notes or something and hold some silly boost. You can't buy them reconditioned as they're so cheap to start with.

Wonder if it was my mate with the Rev 2 lol

Emmy
12-02-09, 10:49 PM

....as in spitfire

Sloth
13-02-09, 01:04 AM
isnt matey. totally wrong... the spit motor is 7 foot long and supercharged. there are 2 cars with it. john dodds "the beast" and charlie from ppc's rover sd1. thats an era with a napier aero engine/\

Jakey Boy
13-02-09, 01:35 AM
I stand corrected, I few people I met there told me it was a merlin?
That engine definitely aint 7 foot long though.

didn't think all the spits were supercharged, surely only later models were charged to match the b109's for top speed and higher altitude running no?

Sloth
13-02-09, 01:44 AM
nope all merlins are s/c, the meteor as put in sherman tanks isnt. hey get in chat dude at the top /\ in the middle

Jack
13-02-09, 07:57 AM
people have been putting merlin engines into cars for years, as to how long they last or how well they work, well thats debatable.

Didn't someone post a link a while back to an American guy who'd put a Merlin engine from a P51 into a car and paint it all up like the Mustang?

surely only later models were charged to match the b109's for top speed and higher altitude running no?
Performance wasn't an issue, it was the fact that BF-109s were fuel injected so could do sharp negative-G dives, which the early merlin engined aircraft couldn't (being carburettor engines, negative G forces fuel out the carb). Hence why Spitfire pilots roll their aircraft and do an inverted dive

Sloth you SUCK at picture taking.

Did anyone see the program on BBC2 before Christmas where a group of lads decided to build a fully functional replica of a Train that had been decomissioned years before. It was built from scratch and took something in the region of 20+ years to build?
