are these search spider things, what google uses to determine who gets the top spots for certain searches?

or do they use traffic information?

Thats the spam bots and chinese trying to sell you p3n1s 3nl4rg3m3nt. You'd be surprised how many posts they attempt to make.

One day I counted 60 new members, 58 of which were spam accounts.

Thats usually counted by hit rate or popularity of a link, although do a search for "google dance" if you want to know more.
