Hi,

Does anybody know how well a small block nova saloon handles compared to it's hatchback counterpart. With all suspension setup, anti roll bars, strut braces and low profile tyres. Please any info would be appreciated.

i remember a big discussion bout this, iirc the general thought was that because of the boot and its extra bit of weight, it handles better as the **** dont skip about. having had both saloons and hatches, i can safely say my 4dr handled better than my 3dr.

Jack

Saloons weigh ITRO 5kg more than their hatchback counterparts (like for like), so difference in handling due to weight is minimal. However, all but 1.0s come with rear ARBs as standard so that may account for improved handling.

Theoretically they have better aerodynamics too :D

Theoretically this has better aerodynamics than both the saloon and hatchback models

Theoretically...............he's right.

I actually found a splitter on my bumper made a bit of difference at higher speed, stopped the front end squirming as much.

You sure about that? Maybe you'd care to elaborate you theory :)

IIRC the hatch's had better aerodynamics from factory normally by 0.01 cd.

Wıth the addition of things like the snowplough and the rear wrap around boot spoiler on the SR's that gave slight more improvement to the aerodynamics. I'd assume that this was probably improved slightly more with the GSi kit and the bootlid spoiler.

Obviously not including aftermarket bits but still the basis was better albeit minimal. What you can add to the front of a loon Nova you can add to a hatch aswell.

so nerrr :p

how much do they weigh over all jack? yeah mine came with front and rear arb as standard.

LMFAO @ ben lol

Dar's rear undertray made a difference to his track car I believe

BIGS
11-02-09, 12:02 PM
Well ive got both and i find the saloon handles much better then the hatch tbh. But then the hatch is just lowerd 60mm and the saloon is lowerd 90 front 70 rear on coilovers. so if that makes a diffrence

its only a fair comparison when both cars run the same items then it would be a fair test. Doesnt anyone remember GCSE science lessons?

However, all but 1.0s come with rear ARBs as standard

They also lacked front ARBs:thumb:

I also think the rear bulkhead in the saloon offers a slightly stiffer body. Going back to my Impreza days, limited editions like the RB5 and P1 had a solid rear bulhead to improve rigidity.

yup/\. on another note, i took the plastic trim under my boot off mine and the back end got very light at speed, could this be to do with it?

ben, my science lesson consisted of me and 3 others blowing stuff up and trying to set the teachers wig on fire...

I would say so, without the deflector thing, it's just like a parachute under there.

Wont fit a hatch, spare wheel well is in the way.

my xe nova loon was fooking aweful on B roads, and corners roundabout anything other than a straight line. was fun controling it mind, it just wanted to go straight at all times.

Jack
11-02-09, 02:16 PM
Its fine with decent suspension on :p

Sloth, the diffuser is fitted because otherwise air gets trapped afront of the rear bumper, hence why it feels light. Due to the different design of the hatch, and as Shaun said the location of the wheel well, this isn't as much of a problem on them.

BIGS
11-02-09, 02:24 PM
Hmm could you use the diffuser from the saloon on a hatch if the wheel well wasnt there

its an interesting debate.

i plan to convert mine to rwd (front mount) and I think the saloon is better proportioned for that. Its almost the same dimensions as a mk2 escort.

Of course it will be. Lighter bumpers, no spoiler, no GTE/SR trim.

Carbon fibre would be better :D The boot lid doesn't need as much reinforcing as the bonnet so you could probably make your 5kg weight saving there.

i just finished building my nova saloon with 1.4 8v, bilstein b6's and springs, it has no antiroll bar and could do with one really, but the handling is great, polybushes also transformed the handling, quick rack is next, it really needs one. at the moment it feels quite difficult to catch slides in time. apart from that really pleased with it. doing my first road rally in it on sunday, so will report back after that:)

I reckon its a member thing. Asked Annie to try it as she's a club member with low post count and small rep score - she can give both positive and negative. As to whether or not it actually counts towards someone's score is debatable mind, but at least she has both options.

So, question is, are there any forum members (i.e. not club members) who can give negative rep..?
