hi,
age old problem leaky sump gasket, i done mine a couple of months back over the corse of a week, scraped every last bit of old gasket of cleened mating surfaces impecably, but the blasted thing is still leaking!, managed to stop the leaky oil cooler unions tho!
anyway i think i might have used to much gasket sealer posibly, haynes says dont put any on the baffle plate but i did anyway.
has anyon got a tryed & tested method of doing this: rubber or cork gaskets?, cleaning methods, what type of gasket sealer to use & how much etc etc.
ideas greatly appricated
cheers

surgically clean sump and mating surfaces, use the 8v rubber gasket not the **** cork one, and a thin smear of sealant. vauxhall grey is best. toyota sell it too. torque the bolts, opposites not one after the other. oh and remove it when the engines cold not hot.

As above 2lte 8v baffle plate and gasket
If your using the 8v rubber one remember to use the 8v sump bolts also as the 16v ones bottom out before the gasket is clamped suffiently
just use a X20XEV gasket. easyest to do.
and just for fun... take the oil pan, lay it on a 100% straight surface, like piece of glass... than you know the real reason the always leak.
its not the gasket thats sh!te.. its people who torque it wrong, every c20xe sump i had was a litttle bend.
yup, i agree mayhem. in that case, can ya get it skimmed?
Also dont overtighten the bolts, because the sumps are weak as fook and just tear around the bolt holes if you go a bit mad on the tightness
Is there a specified torque setting for these adam? Its not in my technical data book

i dont know lol i did it myself. and she's leakfree.

do you have to modifiy the baffle on that?
& get sealer & shorter bolts from vauxhall's.
i did tighten mine up oppsites a bit at a time, but like you say the sump could be bent, i might get a new sump aswell.
cheers for advice.
no probs mboasty, that looks like the one, and afaik the baffle doesnt need cutting.

over use of sealent is one of the most common gasket failure causes.
it acts as a lubricant and as the bolts are tightened the gasked can squeeze more and slide over the mating faces causing it to lengthen between the bolt holes and then buckle. it also means the gasket is over compressed as it allows the gasket to squeeze more for the same torque applied to the bolts. so in effect, the gasket is over tightened.
Also, over use of sealent, then falls inside the sump and does a good job of sealing the pump pickup pipe lol

you can check it youreselve. 100% straight surface, some 80 grid sanding paper taped to it, keep it a little wet with some brake cleaner and slide it over.
after a few times you can see how far its bent. if its a little you can skimm it like that. i did mine like that, and she's lekfree without using sealer.

or you could flip it face down on a glass plate with some grinding paste.

I think one of the tabs does need modding so as not to catch the crank. I'm sure Trackdaynova posted some pics when he did his.
i heared that before, but mine doesnt hit the crank. although there are a few guys on the dutch opel-forum who had to mod it a little.
