wheel well

Im going to remove my spare wheel well, whats best to weld in its place. I'm told that flat metal will offer no strength what so ever.

What have others done?

Put strengthening bars between the rear chassis legs.
You save no weight by removing the well btw, after you've braced the gap and welded a sheet over etc.

Only useful if you want a centre exit exhaust.

Probably wise to weld in a sheet that has ridges built into it to reduce flex of the sheet itself. Harder to weld in, but will be stronger

So true! I lifted one that Burgo had chopped out, silly me expecting it be muchos heavy, nearly went @rse over as it was so light lol lol

Dar, have you just welded a flat plate?

Think i'll go for a plate with ridges.

The reason why there is no weight differnce is the simply beacuse the shell is made out of a pressed metal, meaning a sheet of metal was stretched to make the shape of the wheel well, making the vertical sides of the wheel well slightly thinner than the horizontal areas. So replacing it with somehting of the same thickness of the shell will still use the same amount/weight of metal.

Theres no real need to have it reinforced, the only reason it has the ridges n ripples in the 1st place is not to make it 'shell structural' but just to stop it bending and flexing with the wight of tyres and shopping!

Fully agreed with you too. Nice explanation. If you're going to bin it then the only way it's going to be any lighter is as on the previous page - rivet a an alloy sheet in its place.
