if it is the flywheel ring gear, it is a gbox out job. I think it will be the starter though

well, tis spinning when you turn the key, but not turning engine, so im thinking either stripped gears, or pinion come off the motor,

Will probs be the motor mate, have you tryed whacking it?

the solenoid has to push the actuating arm which in turn pushes the pinion assembly onto the ring gear. it sounds like the solenoid is knackered

Depends on the engine. I done my starter on my 1.4 16v from the underside.

If you go underneath (get the car to a decent height) its all there in front of you. If you go from the top its a pain leaning over/around the inlet

try the cap of oil trick. i did and my transit starter went from whistling and only spining but not turning the engine to being like new and started straight away :thumb:. take the starter off and put a cap of engine oil down inside it and turn it round to try and coat the insides. then use jump leads to test it out the car and if it works refit it.
