View Full Version : 1.4 Turbo
I'm going to get an engine conversion next year when I have a full time job.
Was thinking along the lines of maybe a 1.4 turbo (possibly courtney?)
Has anyone got one or know the bhp of the conversion?
Cheers ant :P

1.4 turbo, now there's an idea :D :D :D if you are still going to be 17 when you plan to change the engine/turbo conversion it will boost your insurance up a fair bit, u can just hear the noise pittttttssssssssshhh

It's strange how ideas change.
A few years back 2.0's were the thing to have
More recently 1.6's have been highly tuned and been OK
Today it's the even lighterweight even higher tuned 1.4's that attract attention.
Good luck if you attempt it. Theres plenty of work in a turbo, even more if you don't know what your doing.

think why ppl may be switching to smaller engines is because of the rising cost of insurance.
if you can afford to tune a 1.6 16v then u can get similar power figure to a 2.0 16v due to the power 2 weight ratio. yet still keeping insurance fairly low. (well without a turbo n e way)
n e one know how much it would cost to build a GSI beating 1400 16v??? i know it would probably be easier just to get a GSI but the ins grp puts me off!

These days (with a limited budget) I don't think I can do much better than a Stadard SR.
It's a good looking car, with alloys, medium sized bumpers and tiny spoiler.
It's a comfortable car, sunroof, electric windows & stereo
And It's a quick car, 0-60 in under 12 and 100mph+
All of that adds up to a tidy motor which gets you from A to B with a low risk of theft, but with minimal costs and a nice turn of speed.
Standard, it's the future of modding.

to be fair, in another thread, someone said it was cheaper to drop a 2ltr in and insure that than have a standard gsi
nova gte and gsi = group 11 insurance, cavalier gl 2 ltr is grp 7/8 - whack that in and it takes on insurance of the donor car *apparently* so people have said in another message thread...........
food for thoughs

An SR is around 7/8 isn't it? It can't be more.
It all depends on what you want and how big your wallet is.

I agree with Chris SR, the SR Nova is a good compromise between performance and reasonable insurance. Is there any point in having a very high performance car with the amount of traffic everywhere and speed cameras around every corner
If there is slow moving traffic you want to get past, an SR will certainly do this OK, it wont hold you back compared with a higher spec car.

I have Alarm/immobiliser, Steering lock, and when I feel at risk a chain to loop around the wheel and through the seat mounts.
I'm never going to lose my car.

LoL. I got a alarm, which goes off all the time cos it is so sensitive, but one day... I had my car locked (i.e. alarm on) and I opened the boot (which is done by key, so u obviously dont want the rest of the car locked) and teh alarm didnt even fucking go off. Next time i did it, it did work. So I dont have much working security on my at all... let alone a blodoy chain!
There was a Corsa with a 1.4 Turbo in one of the mags earlier this year. I'll have a look to see if I can dish the mag out to let you know what the engine spec was. From what I can remember it was a very nippy conversion.

velos are making a turbo kit for the 1.6 16v and the performace estimates are VERY INTERESTING. Il certaily be taking out a mortage to get 1 if the figures are correct!!!

wots velos website address?
i really want a turbo'd motor
www.vmotorsport.fsnet.co.uk/
that should be the link for velo's,
Mike, it was my insurance that sed it'd be cheaper to drop in a 2.0 lump than have a gte/gsi, they wouldnt insure me on a gsi, but i could have a 3.0 v8 rover engine in it for an extra 30 odd quid
Insurance is a funny thing!
