View Full Version : Not A Nova.. But Mini-Based Sabre Sprint

Dave.

Not a nova.. but some may find it interesting..

I owned this back in 2004 for around a year, i was 13 at the time and was going through the "tape and halfords" phaze lol, anyways i ended up selling it to someone from a town next to ours to make way for my blue mk1 nova i had. After that my blue nova had really bad rot so i scrapped it and bought my current nova.

Anyway ive allways regretted selling the sabre sprint, its a mini based kit car from the late 70's. ive been trying to buy it back for around 2 years, but the lad who bought it refused to sell, as it was around 1 of only 10 bodyshells ever produced.

But.. recently hes been needing all the cash he can get, and on friday morning my dad gets a call saying "if your dave wants the sabre, if he can get the money to me today its his!"

i couldnt get to him for 3, so very kindly, another dave from work lol, paid him the money and picked it up for me, it had been sat in a unit for a year and outside for the other 4. :(

basically i bought it back, purely because its sentimental to me. it doesnt currently run but did when i owned it, 99% sure its stale fuel.

the plans are to sue it as a track/rally car, as its a mini chassis, a metro engine and a full fibreglass body, so tis very lightweight

some pictures from abck in 2004 when i owned it:

when i went to see it back in 2005, still exactly as i sold it him, except for a inch of dust:

ripped all the tape out the interior, suffered many slices to hand cutting the tape, and also added a yellow cenetr line to the wheel (sparco wannabee ftw!):

I reckon that could look awesome with a few choice mods. Suspension, the right wheels and a trick ass engine. Could be a good wolf in sheeps clothing. :thumb:

Agreed on Escort, but more like an American one than a European mk3/4 IMO lol

Certainly strange looking whatever it resembles lol. Will go well with a 1275/1330 or even a 1000 engine being made of FG I'll bet lol

Is it a 1000cc now dude?

so many people have stuck gm & honda lumps into minis, you should go down that route.. the a series my have 50 years of tuning behind it, but it needed it, & a modern engine & box would whip it

the honda conversion used the rover metro (k series) subframe & made the track wider so bigger arches would be needed

for looks, maybe the gartrac mk3 escort rwd would give some pointers

looks like a fun project are you selling the nova now then

no way hozay! lol. shes staying put!

Dave.
04-02-09, 12:11 AM
well managed to get her running under her own steam... finally

she wasnt running because of something to do with the carb, dads fixed it now anyways, it needed some easystart first time, but after that she'd run and run on her own fuel :D

now the bad news...

the person who's owned it before me has..stupidly..ragged the tits off it, and has fcuked the timing chain. its ratteling like theirs no tomorrow and it doesnt like hard accelleration. Was perfectly fine when i owned it back in 2005.

so going to change the plugs leads dizzy etc and try again, then its the big job of the timing chain...

also sent off for the logbook today, should get it through enxt week soemtime then declaring her sorn as shes not been taxed/sorn'ed since 2005 lol... looks like Mr AbusiveDriver's going to get a fine :Dlol

BUT.. didnt half put a smile on my face driving her again :D

04-02-09, 01:10 PM
I.ve got to laugh at everyone saying metro turbo.
I tryed for 3 year's finding a complete engine under 1000 with no luck. I went to look at loads of so called metro turbo's that where just 1.3 lumps with a turbo bolted on.
Google Z car's and i.m sure you'll be interested in the type r. Now get saving for it lol.

Dont bother spending on the original engine imo, just use it as an excuse to whack a new one in ! my friend put a bike engine into his mini and it was great ! it was from a 1999 R1, he made a cage up to solidly mount the bike engine into then mounted the cage into the car using the original mounts, used a transfer box from an autograss company that enables the use of driveshafts, revved like hell and of course had a 6 speed sequential box all done for £800 in and driving, perfect hey :)

Dave.
07-02-09, 06:46 PM
just been doing abit of work on her today

had a fiddle about with the exhaust as it was loose, kinda' sorted just needs afew more bits

breaks are sticking slightly, and the timing chains still rattling slightly. but other than that shes totally spot on. its amazing how good condition the frame is in.

anyway, adam (cooltiger) sent me some stickers FOC so i got making it look abit more "rallyish"

you know me and my stickers.. lol

update!

fitetd a harness to the drivers seat out of a scrapper last week, makes it look more "race cary" lol

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC01836.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC01834.jpg

also re-trimmed my rear bench, had a gayyyyy rear grey seat cover on it that didnt fit right, so went and bought a cheap piece of balck cloth for £20

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC01843.jpg

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h80/x_novadose_x/sub%20album/DSC01842.jpg

then also cleaned the rear break's up, when we found that the copper break pipes ahd been squashed with the forklift from years ago, so went and bought some new ones

expecting them to be about £20,....£3:50!!! with new ends! over the moon:

amazingly, this thing PASSED! lollollollol

no advisories, not one, and it was a propper mot :D well chuffed

been offered a 30k mile 993cc mini engine that the test station owners had in storage for 8 years, if i can dig it out of the shipping container, i can have it for free, so i may do a full engine transplant :D

just need a day or two empty the container of old engines panels etc, as its full to the brim, and the engine was the first thing in there lol

overall though, passed with no advisories, and got a free engine out of it, result! :D :thumb:

think its looking the best at the moment, would really suit a track theme. get a cage in there (paint it yellow) and tax it and have some fun. i wouldnt sell it as its obvious you love the thing really, you'll only regret it.
