Just been and viewed a mk2 astra, 1.6 8v auto choke thing, drove well and only had 84k on it. But the owner was about 60 and said he hated paperwork and threw away all the receipts for it!

Also theres no log book as he never got one and he's had it about 3 months. The water in the header tank looked pretty brown and under the cap was some white substance, very gooey. I'm assuming that points to the head gasket?

dont buy it if it hasn't got a log book mate and after 3 months why hasn't he chased it up i would personally never buy anything with out a log book

Ever seen the programme grumpy old men? well he is just like that, hates the modern world, doesn't understand how to turn on a pc and didnt want to ring them up as he would have to wait in a queue for half an hour. Very believeable as most old people can't understand why the modern day world is so 'complicated' to them.

Maybe the paperwork/DVLA thing is true but that's certainly the head gasket on it's way dude.

its most likely down to age of the car.....
the 1.6, is it big or small block???
the old 1.6 big block was pretty much unbustable. I worked for a firm that had several & believe me, we tried a lot..
if the body is straight then it should be fine.
how much????

Quite expensive that, including the lack of receipts and logbook I would look else where.

In the current climate you could get a lot more car for that money steve! Serious bargains to be had.

As I said on my other thread, I nearly got a MK4 astra for 400!
