I want to go for the stretched tyre look. I was wondering is it just a case of putting 185 width tyre on a 195 wheel? Or is there more to it? cheers dave

pretty much. id advise you to look at examples though and ask the owner the spec of wheel and tyres so you know how much you want yours stretched, etc.

just to be nosey, what car is it for and which wheels?

ok il have a look about. for my mk1. not sure what wheels they are. kind of like fan blades. not 100% if im doin it just thinkin of dif things to do. Its all standard apart the wheels and lowered on 60mm spings and shocks. I wana keep it as original as possible but i want it low.

what spec are youre wheels?

185 on a 195 (thats a 6,5j?) isnt stretched.

i'd put a 165 tyre on a 6,5j wheel.

im not sure what offset they are.

mayhem

offset doesnt matter, i'm just not sure how much J a 195 wheel is lol

o right. i dont really understand the j thing

sulphur

6.5j is it not?

mayhem

i think it is, in that case i'd put a 165 tyre on it for the reall stretch look.

see tyrestretch.com for all kind of stretched examples

does anyone know what the law says about stretched tyres?

sulphur

It's a mot failure if the tyre/wheels sticks out beyond the arch IIRC. So get your MOT then fit the stretchies:thumb:

it really dosent look safe to me

sulphur

I read on here somewhere, someone didn't recommend them for everyday driving, dangerous handling or something. Wherever the thread was, was advised show use only.

I think it looks well safe! lol

and also if your a ****e driver for parking you will always kerb your alloys, where as i have ballons which are over sized for the rim, and stick out, the tyre always hits first :)

Depends how stretched you're going. Looks mint either way.

if the tyres are really stretched then under very hard cornering there is a chance they can come off the bead on the rim. When i got my mini it had 195/35/13's on but when i changed them i could only get 175/50/13's and the tyre manufacturer insisted on warning me that if they do come off "tough ****" although to be fair the tyres seem to sit square with the rim

sulphur they are some nice pics. i wasnt going for a massive stretch just a little one for a slight look as im not doin any euro mods to the car!!

sulphur

The last nova pic has no arch mods, no euro mods either really. Would look just as good with std bumpers, bonnet a mirrors. Go for it lad :thumb:

take a look at his rear arches again;)

only thing you have to keep in mind is to check yore tyre pressure. with a low pressure you can drive on the side/wall of the tyre.

i had no problems with 175/50/14 on a 7j wheel.

i know guys running 195 on a 9j wheel

sulphur

OK, looking at it again there is a flair to the rear, but if the ride height was lifted slightly, said flair wouldn't be needed.

Mayhem is probably the best to ask, those crazy foreigners all run wide ass wheels with silly offsets and stretched rubber lol lol

Stretched tyres are all good for a show car but would not recommend them for road use.

195 45 13's on a 10J Rim ftw!

Even so, putting an 185 on a 6J rim wont do anything, even a 165 as mayhem said still wont be nothing dramatic, but why do you want stretched tyres anyway?

This is a 165/50 15 on a 6J rim

o right. i dont really understand the j thing
The J has nothing to do with the width, it refers to the style of lip on the rim of the wheel that the tyre bead sits against.

Wheel sizes are expressed as AAxBBC where AA is the diameter, BB is the width, and C is the lip code (B, D, J, JJ, JK or P)- for example, 15x6.5J is a 15" wheel, 6.5" wide with lip style J.

You have to match tyres to the lip code - a JK tyre won't fit onto a D wheel. However, for a normal road car, most modern wheels and tyres will be J code.

were dose this look come from as i have never come across it before is it a euro look thing
Its been around for years and years, almost every modded euro car has stretched tyres

not to worried about the safety issue
Oh dear lol

As presidenté of the balloon tyre club, I hereby decree stretched tyres to look poo and be impractical :p

Uber stretch looks gay. Tyre in arch and rim sticking out looks toss and is dangerous. :)

senor presidente del la tyres a los ballonnos,

stretched tyres are practical, the help save the rear arches from schraping when running wide wheels.

i'm just wondering why its not used much in th uk.

you guys build mid-engined nova's, RWD nova's etc etc.you guys come up with loads of crazy engine stuff, why didnt anythink think of putting a smaller tyre on the rim, so you can run a nice wheel instead of holding on to the whole 6j et49 thing? lol

its a good point. i personaly like the look. but the problem i have is i dont want to keep the car as standard as possible with a standard looking rim with it low low low and wide wheels with stretched tyres!!

I run stretched tyres on my two vduds, 195/40/17's on 8.5s on my mk3 golf vr6turbo drive it hard makes no difference in handling, other one runs 215/35/16's on a 9" rim again no probs, Looked at getting some 8x14 sr steels (banded) that i know for sale with 185/50s and they looked awsome for our current nova project.

novanova636
02-02-09, 10:34 AM
where abouts are they for sale? how much?

8x14 banded steelies is wide ;) banding steelies drops the offset in huge steps. thats going to need some serious arch mods.

novanova636
02-02-09, 03:33 PM
hmmmmm i dont wana go to crazy with the mods.

mayhem
02-02-09, 03:52 PM
8x14 needs heavy mods. in my project thread (title: my dutch corsa a project) are some pics of the mods you'll need to do to make 8x14 banded steelies fit in the rear. flared arches FTW.

cause steelies are widend to the outside only, the offset drops massive.

novanova636
02-02-09, 06:00 PM
are banded steelies safe to use all the time?

mayhem
02-02-09, 06:19 PM
the are, i just dont know the uk laws about them, here in holland there legal for road use.
