View Full Version : input shaft oil seal
appart from the obvious of dropping the engine or box out
is the input shaft oil seal difficult to change (the vauge manual only has a pic like in the epc lol)
Do you mean the shaft seal that sits behind the fly wheel?
If so, its not too hard, but does take a while and does require either the gearbox of the engine to be dropped out.. Easiest way i found was to drop the engine, coz you have to remove the sump, so cant have chains round the bottom of the engine to support it. :?
Once the engine is out, remove the clutch plates. You need to lock up the fly wheel to remove the six bolts, i did this (carefully!) with a large screwdriver locked against the teeth.. Probably not the best method but it worked ok..
Now remove the sump.. Underneath is the crank and its housing. You undo the end bearing housing, and gentely tap it until it comes free.. Then just slip the old seal offf and put the new one on with a bit of oil on the inside lip of it to prevent damaging it!
Put the housing back on, and tighten to the correct torque (cant remember what it is). Seal the mating faces of the housing with sealant before you refit it! Then just refit the sump, flywheel and clutch, and reconnect it to the gearbox. Job done! :D
Hope that helps mate..
If im taking about a different seal then all that is totally pointless!
Ben :)
i know how to replace that one lol i mean the one in the gearbox

it dont take long to whip off the box
but i reckon you could change it in situ tbh - if you drop the clutch / etc out.
if you withdraw the shaft to get the clutch out - take out the clusters(attached to end plate), and you should be able to get it out from the hatch
if not you can always take the box out but that involves taking out shafts etc.
