was walking past my motor the other day and smelt petrol. had a look underneath and there was a nice big puddle. had a look at the fuel gauge and iv lost a quater of a tank!
im thinking its just a fuel line as my car is a 1989 mk 1 vauxhall nova. and the seal has probably perished. the car hasnt seen much use and now iv bin using it alot im thinkin its just pushed it over the edge

is it easy fix if this is the case?
any ideas on prices etc?

help appreciated

if the hose is burst, then its the hose.

if the tank has rotted, then its the tank

if it is a hose, then you go to halfords & get a new bit of hose & 2 new jubilee clips. it will cost about a fiver & take 5 minutes... but if the tank has lots of fuel in, be careful not to let it flood out on you it is very dangerous stuff when it is not burning, and even worse when it is.... drain the tank out as much as is possible....

if it is tank rot, then you need to remove the exhaust, and then get the tank off. then get a new one.

if it is tank rot, then you need to remove the exhaust, .

and disconnect the handbrake cable, which could be seized up.

Is tank rot the Nova equivalent of nob rot?

Easy fix though dude, just find out where it's leaking from first though lol

2nd hand ones won't be all that expensive. Best identify the problem first and as soon as possible.

If the handbrake cable is seized, just leave the handbrake off and slide the tank out passed it, if the tanks rotten that is.

But my bet is on a perished hose. As standard Novas have two plastic pipes underneath - main/return, and then small sort of braided section going onto the tank, one of these is probably perished.

I just got lengths of heavu duty rubber fuel pipe from my motorfactors and petrol pipe clips.

ok might sound stupid, but are you sure its fuel, because doesnt fuel evaporate quite quickly?? and you said there was a massive puddle?

just an idea

You DONT need to remove the handbrake cable to remove a fuel tank :thumb:

My money's on one of the 2 "shaped" hoses being split.
