lately whenever i put my heater on it making a very strange noise and 90 % of the time i cant get any hot air out is it likely to be that the heater matrix has packed up ??????

does the fan turn?does it rotate at the right speed?
have you got a block in one of ya warm water pipes

what age is yer car?

Mk2 no hot air comes ffrom centre console area remember.

Heater fan is in scuttle panel under windscreen (batter area) - usually under a big plastic splash cover. check its wiring when you turn the heater on. Check for leaves blocking it.

If air comes out prob like Ian says ref blockage somewhere

as Ade says, check the electricals out first, but if the fan IS working, but still no hot air, disconnect the 2 heater matrix pipes in engine bay and stick a hose on 1, watch the sh*t come out of the other pipe!then put hose in other pipe so u get it properly clean-the matrix could probly do with this treatment anyway, prob neva been done.
reconnect the pipes. follow haynes manual instructions for checking out airblocks etc. :)
