Dunno if this is the right area as it electrical but can be considered mechanical

My bro had a lot of bother with his Cav SRi 16v yesterday which ended in a tow home from the RAC.

-The car started off with EML on and cutting out.
-Car was easy to restart.
-Then the problem got worse as just before the engine cuts out the tacho would go crazy (rev to 6k and up & down but the engine would either idle normally or stall whilst doing it).
-Sometimes it was possible to restart the car but the tacho would stay dead during revving of the engine.
-Before it totally went dead the EML no longer came on even turning off ignition and back on.

Today we tried to start her up but it refused to stay alive. EML was on during ignition, It would turn over fine fire up but then stall.

Flashed up ECU codes but nothing came up. Code 12 only.

Anyway, from what mates have said and searching on Vaux forums its very likely the crank sensor (which is on its way ordered for £30) RAC man who is familiar with Ecotec issues said its a likely cause and said that the engine sounded very healthy when he heard it run and during cranking.

Haynes doesnt say where its located, so any ideas? Pics would be great

If this fails to fix the problem then try the camshaft sensor as these seem to fail on a regular basis with the X20XEV engines.

Whilst you are at it I would change the camcover gasket as these seem to always leak oil into the sparkplug area giving a crap running engine.

This info has come from 4 years of running a X20XEV in my vectra - got sick of having to change 3 camshaft sensors, 2 crank sensors , 2 head gaskets and 2 camcover gaskets I pulled it out and put an C20XE in instead!

Cheers guys will have a look.

My bro had a goose around the bay to try locate it. He found a small black diameter pipe that comes from behind the coolant bottle, brake fluid bottle that curves round towards the dispack. My bro had a look and was a bit stuck as to where it goes as he had never seen it. I had a look and found a rubber conector that the pipe simply slides into and connects to a plug behind the dispack.

He then fired her up and she started fine. Ran for ages untill the rad fan came on and didnt seem like it wanted to stall. He didnt drive it but still sounded fine.

The rocker gasket was done last week, and the crankcase breather pipe gasket will be done soon as that leaks.
