im afraid whoever has told you this is giving duff information mate - known in the trade as "pub talk"

ONLY 1 litre nova engines were OHV

pop the bonnet on the car, stamped in letters around 4 inches wide, 3 inches tall, cant miss it on the rocker cover will be the letters OHC

as for the OHC coming in at a J plate

OHC engines have been in novas since the duration.

J plate is nonsense mate

hope thats of some use to you anyway.

This is correct but probably where the 1.2 OHV theory came from is that although all Nova 1.2s were OHC, the Astra of the same period had a 1.2 OHV engine. It was the same 1196cc capacity (not sure if the block was the same design) but had the older OHV head from the Kadett C.

Not sure how long they fitted it for but my 1988 brochure still lists an Astra 1.2 as OHV. You would think for ease of production that they would have fitted the more modern Nova engine.
