View Full Version : internal fuel tank
hi i am wanting to fit an internal fuel tank and was wondering what i would need to get it working with a 2.0ltr red top. with fuels lines and fuel pump fuel filter etc cheers :thumb:
If your not gonna run a swirl pot, get a baffled tank (this is a must if no swirl is used) if your budget stretches, get a foam filled one (eliminates fuel slosh & possible explosion) but MOST OF ALL get one with a "roll over valve" if you can! Will save your life if you go on your roof.
It works the same as the OE tank.
Tank of fuel - 1 inlet, 1 outlet, 1 breather
Fuel Pump - Obv connect to tank outlet, then run to fuel rail
Return - From fuel rail back to tank.
Filter - Fit an inline filter from pump to engine
Job done.
Just be aware of compications with having an interal tank - higher COG, constant smell of fuel, major fire issue if the worst happens.

Here is a pic of mine.
Pretty well as described by Mike really.
They dont have to smell of fuel. Its not actually the tank that lets out the vapour its the braded lines.
You can get fuel line that wont let vapour pass but ites VERY expensive!
If you need any info i will try to help.

If your running injection you will need an external pump.
Something like:http://www.034motorsport.com/images/044MS_PUMP.jpg
That is a Bosch 044 fuel pump.
Not cheap either unfurtenetly.
If anybody knows of cheaper good quality external pumps i also would like to know as i need to swap my carb fuel pump now to high pressure injection pump.
Maybe if your having a tank specially made like i did they could incorporate an internal pump.

I use an FSE billet filter.
Where are you thinking of getting the tank from and what sort of budget are you banking on?
i am thinking of getting one from here http://www.sm-engineering.co.uk/alloy_fuel_tank.php because they do it foam filled i have emailed them and asked if they can put the pump on for me

These seem to be the cheapest for the 044 pump, but have to be carefull of copys etc. Im currently building my fuel system using these for my fittings http://www.thinkauto.com/
cheers Ste what type of fuel lines are you using as i don't want my car smelling of fuel

Im using PTFE lined braided hose for lines that run inside the car.

It has no breather that i can see or a rollover valve.
I would be asking also for something better than a sight gauge for fuel level.
VDO do senders that can be installed into tank and linked then to a fuel gauge on the dash.
Are you thinking square or round tank like mine for the wheel well?
square as i am taking my wheel well out have you got a link to the site where you got yours from

Here is an example of what you will pay for a Proalloy tank.
The quality of workmanship is spot on, but you will have to pay top dollar.

Wizzy can you show me what you end up buying?. I've want to run internal lines but from my GSI tank. I've seen that Dar has written up a good how to guide and fittings needed but i'm still not sure what to buy lol.
I only have about £300 tops to play about with so I cant afford a tank when i need to get a facet pump , lines and a new inline filter ... Any help if you know
