Head unit wiring problems

when i turn off the car i lose all the settings on my head unit. i was told by many people to re wire it so that the red and yellow wires are swapped, live and ignition. i done this today, turned the car on and the head unit powered up fine, but no sound out the speakers. when i turned the car off all the speakers crackled and head unit started to smoke, so i changed it back to how it was originally (red to red yellow to yellow). h/u powers up fine but makes no sound. any help would be appreciated

all fuses are fine. and i cant remember the make and model, not a very well known make. why does it matter?

if there is no sound but it still powers up then you have blown the circuit in the head unit i did the same in my car a couple of years agow an i took it to my local car audio dealer an told me to buy a new one

thanks for all the advice, its sorted now. the red and yellow wires that i changed (live and ignition) was behind the iso connector, i was meant to do it in front of it, nearer to the head unit side. so i changed the live and ignition in the proper place, head unit powers up fine and doesnt forgot the settings like it used to. but still no sound - new head unit needed lol i tried another and it works fine. mostly all sorted then! cheers :)
