Jeez, piece of pish. Get a waterpump aswell as it will only leak if you dont replace it. It tensions the belt.

a socket set, some spanners, some allen keys & a large adjustable spanner to move the water pump to re-tension it.

remove the fan belt
remove the timing case
time the cambelt with the marks on the top & bottom pulleys
loosen the water pump & slacken the belt, to be safe, get a new pump cos they always leak anyway
unbolt the bottom pulley (stick it in gear & get assistant to stand on the brakes)
slip the old belt off & slip the new one on.
refit the bottom pulley with some loctite on the threads
make sure it is timed correctly
tighten the new belt by turning the water pump (lookin haynes book for tension figure)
refit the cover & fan belt

No automatic tensioner no, just manually tension it with the pump.
Get a Haynes manual, some people make take the piss about them but everyone uses them and they are very useful.
Read the instructions, digest and proceed at your own pace.
You have picked the right car anyway, they are very simple mechanically so good to start learning about car maintenance. You will just need to brush up on your bodywork skills aswell to keep up with the good ole Nova rustlol
Good luck:thumb:

I there any locking tools..ie crank or cam locking tools you can use, once you have timed the engine,so that nothing moves:)

No need, just line up the mark on the cam sprocket with the one on the backplate and dont move it. Put it in gear & apply the handbrake to stop the crank sprocket moving.

There aren't but you don't really need them on an 8 valve.

As has been said theyre very easy to do ! i did mine when i first got my car at the age of 17 too ! didnt really know what i was doing at all but thought i'd have a go and it was a doddle, once you put the new belt on turn the engine over manually i.e. with a ratchet on the bottom pulley to make sure theyre's no tight spots.

as you are an audi tech, then you will be used to swapping water pumps........ buy a QH one, as they supply GM these days

When I done a timing belt on a 1300 I took off the starter motor and jammed the flywheel with a screwdriver to get the bottom pulley off, the bolt shouldn't be that tight anyway.

I got away without tnesioning the belt, checked tension according to haynes, hey presto  .

Tension is something like: Find the middle point of the longest part of the belt (between cam sprocket and crank) and depress the belt towards the water pump, with moderate pressure the belt should travel approx 1cm towards the water pump!

Something like that, check it fo sho tho.

why not just remove the access plate on the bellhousing???

but if the car is parked up in 1st gear with the handbrake on, then it should easily undo without all the trouble

Dunno, just never thought on that really, but the starter is handy enough taken off anyway with two bolts.
