View Full Version : Internet Service Providings assistanceings pls
At the moment I have UKO internet at home, £25 a month, tres good etc. I'm moving out soon though, so will need a landline and internet package, either together or separate. Also, I'll need to find an ISP for my dad. So can anyone make recommendations on the following..?
1. Landline and broadband package, or separate. Must have decent contention and NO download limits (preferably none of this crappy "fair use policy" as well). Looked on BT website and they either do landline rental @ £10 a month, or a landline and broadband package at £38 a month. Considering my parents pay something like £13 a quarter for their BT landline... :tard: For £38 a month I may as well pay the landline rental and keep my UKO account, as that will be cheaper and I know its good.
2. Decent broadband ISP for my dad to use. He won't be using much bandwidth, probably only around 10Gb a month tops, but the cheaper the better. He has an Orange contract phone, is their broadband any good?
[edit] And in both cases, none of these "free connection, but you HAVE to buy our wireless router @ £50" crapjobs either pls
ive heard good things about virgin media and they have special offers atm bud!

talk talk :)
phone and broadband i allways connect at over 6mbps, only pay £13 per month for the lot, free calls, free broadband, just pay line rental,
just that it takes ages for them to sort the mac codes out lol
i dont know about there fair usage, but iv never been told off, i must do atleast 40gig a month lol
Virgin media are absolute crap! Turned up and fitted it first time, but said they had to come back because we need a new line run or somthing. countless times they were supposed to install our stuff, never turned up. When they did, they said they need to rebook because we need somthing else, how many times do they want to look and rebook???
They also decided to start charging before it was installed lol
We have sky phone/tv/broadband, havent really had any problems with them and not bad priced i dont think. Internet randomly cut out a couple of times when we first got it but been ok since

Orange broadband is ok, not had any problems with it, only problems with the livebox they supply.
Stay away from tiscali - we had more problems with them than anything, even more problems when we wanted to change.

I have Sky+/Internet, phone line with BT. No quibbles here. Sky provided the modem/wireless router thingy wotsit (8mb BB £5 PM)
Never looked into mobile broadband, but some of the providers offer good new customer deals.
Orange do Home Max (http://www.orange.co.uk/time/broadbandmax/) which is internet plus phone line for £15 a month, but has a fair usage policy which doesn't even state what the limit is  However they WILL offer this service to the house. £15 a month for phone + net... hmm
Virgin won't do a landline to the postcode I need, and again don't publish their fair use policy :( However their broadband is £18 a month for where i live, 8mb connection
In fact, Orange do a 10Gb/month free broadband package, which my dad would be abe to use as he's with them too... hmmmmm, I think Orange may be a winner here
Just looking at Sky now. And I know how sh!t tiscali are lol
Sky is just fecking confusing lol
Seems they offer an unlimited broadband package with no FUP, but you need to have sky TV as well which makes it £36.50 a month - as I don't give a feck about having sky tv, this would be more expensive than keeping UKO and having a BT line, so thats off the menu :(
[edit] and even if i tell them i want sky to supply my phone line, they still tell me I need a BT line. Fcuktards! lol

How about BeThere? Mate has a ADSL2 service on a BT line he pays 25quid IIRC upto 24Mb but he gets 19Mb + 1.3Mb upload and they gave him a BeBox (modem) included.
He has had no issues with them very good service he says and not capped.
Plus they do a very cheap 8Mb service too apparently.
Can't do Be as Yeovil exchange hasn't been unbundled :(

^^ Oh well :(
Stay away from talk talk, utter crap.
Virgin are great here. My speeds getting faster and they are ment to be fitting the old fiberoptic stuff too.
I get speeds from 6+ to 9meg. Never tips out or doesnt work.
Im on virgin media too - tv, 10meg net (i get 9 so not bad) and landline with free wkend calls - 27 quid a month jobby. Granted tv is crap (not many channels etc) but not had any issues with net or phone so id recommend them (also 30 quid for you and referer if u do recommend a friend - if u already know someone on vm).
O2 broadband is good. its 7.50 (8mb) per month if u have a contract phone or 12.50 without. need a BT line though.

No cable network down in Jacks neck of the woods (like me I think)
So its BT landline ahoy as far as I'm aware.
Yeovil exchange hasn't been unbundled :(
....so O2 costs £22.02 a month, atop the BT line of ~£11. Again, they have a FUP but don't say what the usage limit is
At the mo Orange are still looking the most promising, although I'm not too keen on the idea of that livebox jobbie whatsit. Or Sky if I can blag connection without needing a BT line.
Thing is everyone has different opinions about different broadband companies, I heard that Tiscali were terrible but they were the best service I've ever had. It all depends on the speed you can get in your area. If you google 'broadband comparison sites' you can find ones that you can put your postcode in and they will give you the best deals in your area, whether you'r looking for cheap, speedy, unlimited usage or just a good service.

Orange's service is a bit poo, even moreso when things go wrong, and liveboxes are pap.
Talktalk are usually the cheapest but are also poo.
Zen/ADSL24/Eclipse are some of the best for service and having a brit on the other end of the phone ;).
I use Tiscali at the mo for phone and broadband. Costs us around £20 quid a month (calls on weekends are free, calls in the week are charged)
I connect at around 2.2 (not great I agree) but it does the job. No idea on FUP as I only go on a few nights a week.
I'm on a wired modem, but I can't remember if wireless was free or not. I only went for wired after the disaster that is otherwise known as AOL put me right off it.
Take a peek here: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/
Update :p
Right, my plan is to go with BT for a landline, then whoever for internet.
HOWEVER
BT will be 21CN'ing the local exchange on the 28th Feb of this year. Info (http://www.switchedonuk.org/home/what/)
Is that likely to mean broadband speeds will go up, and/or give me a wider choice of ISPs? I did note that Virgin (I think) stated they could offer me something like 2Mbps now, and from 1st March that would rise to 4Mbps... Is it worth me waiting until after that date to see if I can get a better deal on intarwebs?
