View Full Version : 1989 Nova project

Thought i'd start posting up about my little project.

I got a 1989 1.2 swing 45,000 mile 2 owners from new in Glacier white back in October 2007.
Reason being it had an excellent shell with none of the usual rot that we all love to hate.
My purpose being to strip and rebuild it into a nice wee road/show car. (No trailor queen though)
Rather than changing to mk2 style like everyone & their aunty seems to be doing im keeping it a mk1.
Gte style bumpers etc. courtenay leather 5 stud conversion running turbo wheels and going a bit ott with the detail. (That was the plan anyway)
Ive a good strong C20XE there from my track car to put in it but idealy i would like a C20LET. Having not long done a V6 conversion on a mates Nova i decided that really wasnt for me.
So keeping it Nice clean simple & subtle

Having opted to replace the crossmember and slam panel it is currently in the bodyshop getting a full bare shell respray.
Hoping to get it back soon so i can get on with the build in order to have it ready for the summer :thumb:

So heres pictures of how it was when i bought it! More pics to follow of work i carried out on it before it went of to the bodyshop.

Should be a nice build this with having such a nice clean shell to work on. Another MK1 I thought there wasn't any left in Scotland. Common as muck lad lol

Get some pics up of the V6 conversion as well :)

Anyway as you can see from the pics Wilson put up it was a bit of a mismatch when i got it, mk1 rear + grille with mk2 front bumper :tard: (pictures updated on 1st post)

Still all original panels apart from the new front end i put on.

Before it went off to the Bodyshop i started by stripping down and removing slam panel and crossmember, welded the new 1 into place, stitch welding the engine bay before sealing and stonechipping. I also carried out the work for de-locking the doors and removing the rear wiper before rolling the archs to accomodate the choice of wheels.

As its still in the bodyshop its given me plenty time to think about whats best to do with it.
Ive decided to use ye olde faithfull 2.0 16v from my old track car in it, it was a good strong engine having had a full rebuild with competition rings, main bearings, shells and head gasket amongst some of the parts used approx 1000 miles ago so why mess with what worked before......

Ive also collected a large box of parts ready to go to the powder coaters for some bling to look at......

Just itching to get her back and get on with the build, hopefully in Feb it will all kick off & get into full swing!!!!!!!

A wee update!
Still not got car back yet so in the mean time im getting everything ready just to build it back up again! Im running out of space for it all

Done a sump gasket, oil pump gasket etc. on the engine and painted up he block etc. ;)

Got a load of stuff powder coated in candy blue. List includes rear axle, fuel pump housing, bottom arms, track control arms & mouts, anti-roll bar, bonnet catch and spring, mainifold heat shield, rocker and timing covers, powercap and also the driveshafts so far. Just waiting on my exhaust and anti-roll bar and steering rack clamps :D

Got my front and rear strut braces, engine mounts, wiper motor plate and rear axle anti-roll bar done in anthracite grey

Also managed to get some brand spanking new grey roof gutter trims. Apparently the factory only has a select amount of passenger side ones left but no drivers side ones. Got my local dealer to do a search and they found me one at Dobbies in Carlisle. big up to Charlie at Evans Halshaw Edinburgh.......

Really stuggling to get the time to fire on with this at the mo but progress is steady. ;)
Removed the remainder of the running gear and got the underside all wire brushed and cleaned up and sealed any bits that required it.
I then layered it with white stonechip to give it a good strong base and have then painted the whole underside with white hammerite. Brushed on a nice thick layer first and once dry i then brought the stonechip gun back into action filling it up with the hammerite and spraying a final coat on to give it an nice even finish. Gone for the hammered finish, not literally though lol
Although Dougie probably wants to hammer me as the workshop is now awash with white speckles :tard:

Trying to make an old car brand new just isnt gonna happen, short of spending every penny we earn and putting all the time in the world into it we just have to make them as good as we can for what we can.
There are some cracking Nova's out there getting the works done and look totally amazing but as much as it pains me to say it now mines just aint gonna be all that.
Just doing the best i can with what i can which is what it should be all about really eh :thumb:

Righty, another wee update as its been a few weeks since that last.

A few more coats of dodo juice all round before fitting windows, seals and lights etc. to make sure its all well protected :)
Got the front brakes on, brake lines fitted, rear discs & calipers and all other running gear so i can get it down on the deck. Had probs with the front springs hitting the wheels so sourced shorter ones to solve the problem :thumb:

The car was originally a 1.2 swing so i had a full car wiring loom from my Gsi Track car so got that all tidied up and fitted, pre-ran wiring for alarm central locking and speakers before the carpets go down. Fitted leccy windows mechanism from my old gsi aswell.
Got the bumpers, skirts, and lights on and finally got it down of the ramp and on its wheels.
Its actually starting to look like a proper car again :D

(Really need to get a decent camera for some good pics :( )

Outside all done now, windows all in etc. (pics to follow)

Back up on the ramp to get the brakes bled, gear linkage done, clutch cable in, anti-roll bar on and the finishing touch was the exhaust going on.
Yes it is blue and i have had it powder coated aswell
Im assured as the stuff is put on with extreme heat it will more than withstand the heat from the engine :D
Got it running aswell but having probs with it overfueling so just going through the elimination process but other than that its all A O K :thumb:

Basically once its all sound mechanically i'l get the interior fired in, Wheel alignment done, MOT'D & taxed and ready to rock n roll :p

Aye didnt like it trailing all the way back to the bottle, never looks the tidiest so an old trusted T piece used for the Automatic choke on a 1.3 sr is what we always use to tap that pipe into the matrix outlet. Has been tried and tested for years :thumb:

As the weathers decided to finally stay sunny up this way i got the car out over the weekend
Got a few more pics (photography skills getting slightly better) :d

With no senisble offers on it so far and managing to get by i will be holding onto it for the time being. Not finding much use for it on the road so im thinking about stripping out the interior over the winter, painting the inside, put a cage in, 2 buckets & harnesses and track it! Not had my track car for over a year now so im getting the calling again!
Not sure what to do really long term so just getting on with the wee bits n bobs im not 100% happy with for the time being :d
See what happens though.....

As with a lot of folks just now moneys tight and so would be better in my pocket than sitting in the garage
My daily driver is good enough for now and it keeps me out of trouble :d

After regretting selling this back in 2009 after spending a lot of time and effort on it i was finally given the chance to get it back a couple of weeks ago having been contacted by the then owner Dan.
I went straight up to Scotlandwell near Kinross to see it as it was surprisingly close to home, i thought the car would have been miles away by now. Anyway Dan was the 2nd owner since i sold it and loved the car to bits but just didnt have the time to do anything with it. Thankfully he got in touch to offer it back to me as he wanted someone to have it that appreciated it for what it is and put it back into top condition again. (Think thats me) :tard:
Having had a good look around it and with Dan giving me the price he wanted i put the wheels in motion to make sure i could buy it of him as i wasnt letting it go again.

So i went up this morning with the readys and typical Scottish T in the park Weekend Weather to collect it, got it home and gave it a good wash and chamois before putting it under cover in the garage.
There are a few bits that need attention (see pics) and also a few bits i'd like to change including some more powdercoating.

So here some pics of how it is now....

So going a slightly different direction with this now, the interior has gone and will be fitting it out for some track action aswell as freshening it up over the winter for road use next summer. (I say thwe term summer loosely, i generally mean between the months of April and October) :d

Spent the day tidying the floor up and getting it all painted ready to fit the full cage and bucket seats. It will be seeing some track action before the year is out hopefully as my lovely wife gave me a Knockhill track day voucher last xmas but ive had nothing to take up, so i must use it before it expires or no more useful pressys for me. lol

Anyways pics of said progress so far.

Thought it was time for another update. C20XE Now removed to check and redo engine bay before the new engine goes in. The engine bay has faired quite well over the 3-4 years since it was done but could really do with a fresh coat of paint. Im no magician when it comes to painting or anything else for that matter, and the bay proved quite difficult especially with all the silly nooks and crannies. I cut the holes in the bulkhead to help expel heat from the bay, not a fan of removing the bulkhead completely. Not the greatest job through one thing or another (excuses excuses)but hopefully with a bit edging strip or that they will come good in the end, hopefully!
The underside and inner archs etc. could do with being touched up aswell, so cleaned & treated any areas that required it, resealed any areas of loose sealer and repainted.
More bits powdercoated candy orange and just a few more bits to be done to make it right again!

Yeh the bulkhead was one of these things i wasnt sure about, i dont really like doing away with it altogether so decided on trying some holes to help expel heat from the bay. Was gonna be a bit hit or miss and with one thing or another (bad drillbit and being a cheap skate :)) ended up being a bit of a miss. So hopefully with a bit edging strip or something around them and with the engine back in place they wont look too bad and will serve there purpose.

I know how you feel, i actually had a few moments of "F*** IT, i really cant be bothered with this anymore full stop! Had a couple days stuck in the house due to the recent bad weather and thought ooft, thats even worse being stuck in the house with feck all to do. So decided to soldier on with it.

Anyway i got it out the garage this afternoon and into some daylight for the brief hour or so it actually stopped raining, the bay surprisingly looks slightly better than i thought out in natural light so got some better pics. Should look reasonably good once all built back up :d
